NEIL YOUNG - A DAY IN THE LIFE

July 4, 2008 – 11:20 am

When Neil Young performed at the Rock in Rio Madrid on June 27, 2008, for his encore, he sang The Beatles’ A Day In The Life.

The concert was broadcast on TVE2 and, thanks to kigonjiro, the show was taped and shared on the Dime site.

Here is the track, A Day In The Life, extracted from the show and shared as as high quality 256kbs MP3. There is a slight glitch around the two-minute mark.

Readers are invited to comment on why Neil Young has chosen to close his current European tour with The Beatles’ A Day In The Life.

  2. Consider that Neil Young closed his italian gigs in Florence and Verona with an amazing version of “All along the watchtower”….

  3. Neil young he no good. Long live the Michael Jackson

By Jimmy Jams on Jul 4, 2008

  4. WOW this stuff is cool, even if Michael Jackson owns the song. Any chance you have some other live concerts of the guy from modern times? …(I mean Neil, not Mickey).

By Brahman on Jul 4, 2008

  5. It´s a shame that this zombie Michael Jackson owns this song. It belongs to Lennon/McCartney.
And I would not put too much meaning in the choice of this song as the last one of this tour. Ol´ Shakey can be quite spontaneous sometimes. Maybe he decided this just before he went out to play the encore.

  7. What is Jimmy Jams talking about? Is it me or is that an incoherent comment? Are you really referring to the fact that MJ owns the song or are you just dribbling about MJ?

By David on Jul 4, 2008

  8. Neil Young is a great musician and a great person as well. Will all the charitys he has done for others like “The Bridge” He has given us years of music. Its too bad that Michael Jackson bought Northern songs from Paul McCartney.I don’t know what Macca was thinking. Maybe he was sniffing too much coke during the whole transcation. Neil Young rocks out. After all these years he is till the best.

  9. michael doesnt own any beatles songs. its been several years since he did. paul owns them again.

  12. WHO CARES ABOUT MJ! THIS IS A CLASSIC BEATLES SONG AND NEILS RENDITION IS LIKE ALL THE STUFF HE DOES.HIS WAY! THATS NOT TO SAY IT’S WRONG OR RIGHT IT’S JUST NEIL.PAUL SHOULD NEVER HAVE LET THE SONGS GET AWAY TO START WITH.MJ SHOULD STAY IN HIS CAVE OR WHERE EVER HE IS!!!

  14. I’ve never heard Michael Jordan sing. He was a good basketball player, though.

Neil’s voice fits the Lennon part of the song well. It’s too bad Paul couldn’t have sung the middle part for him…

    THANK YOU BIG O!

    many thanks!

  16. Michael Jackson still owns the publishing rights to the Northern Songs catalogue, which includes ALL Lennon-McCartney songs copyrighted before 1973. He did use them as collateral for a $100 million loan from Bank of America, which was secured by an offer from Sony to buy the company if Jackson defaulted on the loan. He hasn’t. The Beatles sold their rights in 1969; Dick James owned 50% of NS; the Epstein family owned 20%; the fabs owned the rest. This was the result of a deal made by Brian Epstein, which was innovative but too generous towards publisher Dick James.

  17. Neil’s rendition is one of the best I’ve ever heard. What a dream come true if Neil did an entire album’s worth of Beatles tracks. I’d like to see Neil and Macca write a song or two together. Now, THAT would be something!

By Belmo on Jul 7, 2008

  18. I didn’t really find that Neil’s voice suited this at all, as interested as I was in hearing it. I do tend to love most of what Neil touches by other composers but I think maybe Lennon/McCartney is not his forte. Good to hear anyway.

  19. @ darth: as far as I know, the brand “rock in rio” was sold or they made “franchise” concerts.
but it´s correct, “rock in rio” doesn´t always mean that the concert is in rio.

  22. Actually, he never ever played ‘A Day In The Life’ until this tour.

I even double checked at http://www.sugarmtn.org/scgi-bin/sugarmtn.cgi

Philippe may be thinking of “Ride My Llama,” which he DID play on the Rust tour, and has a similar “Aaaaahhhhh” part. My band, Carpe Noctem, has actually sandwiched “A Day In The Life” in the middle of Neil’s “Ride My Llama” for years.:D

  23. Actually, that link doesn’t seem to work.

To see the list of every show at which he played it, go here:
    http://www.sugarmtn.org/

In the search field, Type A Day In The Life and select ’song’ from the dropdown menu and search.

  24. The Beatles version of A Day In The Life played while the “Road-Eyes” set up the stage during the Rust Never Sleeps tour, but 08 is the first time Neil has ever played it.

  25. THE RENDITION IS ENTIRELY CHAOTIC! EVERYTHING IS IN WRONG ORDER!!!!!

By epicBeatles on Aug 23, 2008

  26. If I may add, the most decent version of the “A Day In The Life” was made by Sting.

By epicBeatles on Aug 23, 2008

  27. A Day In The Life is the greatest song of the greatest band of all time. Neil Young is one of the greatest of all time. Isn’t that enough.

  28. It is ideal to move during off-peak times which are
usually between-dates of the month. Ensure you have loads of actions with you for children to
stay busy with. As you may have heard on the news recently,
some product listings sites on the internet have more than a few problems with merchandise, sources, fraud and more.
