Newport 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Newport Folk Festival, Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI; July 31, 2011. Very good to excellent FM.

As Elvis Costello said on stage: “You know you’re in the right place when you’re backstage with Pete Seeger, watching Wanda Jackson!” With such a recommendation, it is certainly worth giving the Newport Folk Festival at least a listen.

This is what countrystandardtime.com wrote:

Costello wasn’t one to rest on his laurels, although he started with So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star and his own Red Shoes. Costello went more modern… [with] A Slow Drag With Josephine from National Ransom… But an energetic Costello, aided by long-time mainstays Pete Thomas on drums, Steve Nieve on keyboards and Dave Farragher on bass, ended on a very high note of What So Funny (’bout Peace, Love and Understanding), a song which seems ever relevant.

Thanks to tamlyn who shared the show on Dime and to ShaReef for keeping it alive at Hunger City.

Thanks also to DavePas63 for the artwork.

  6. Fantastic Costello live at Newport….I downloaded and burned to cd and listened to it immediately on my way home from work in the car…terrific performance, and I really liked his guests and cover songs this time around. Now if you could only find this past weekend’s Riot Fest performance (9-16-2012), I would be thrilled.

  7. Thanks to all for a great EC post. Never get tired of hearing “Brilliant Mistake” or Nick Lowe’s old Brinsley number.
