Running For President [King Records 7696-1, 1CD]

Live at the Coliseum, Charlotte, North Carolina; March 20, 1976 (evening show). Very good soundboard. Incomplete show - missing See See Rider and I Got A Woman.

The US presidential race is hotting up and we might as well throw Elvis into the mix! [The title of this release probably is a reflection of the bootlegger’s affection for the King. Click here for more “Elvis For President” rarities.]

Joni Huopana pointed out at Elvis In Norway:

This one has the spotlight on James Burton. His licks can be heard just fine, but fortunately not too loud; it doesn’t drown anything or anyone. The sleeve states that he was about to leave the band, and that his part probably was recorded onto a separate track to give some reference to the possible newcomer. According to the same notes James got a raise and stayed…

The CD starts with a snatch of 2001 theme and then strangely enough jumps straight into Amen. “B-52″ [as the segment is affectionately known by fans] is done twice and, as usual, Presley explains about JD [Sumner] that “he can do it better, he can do it lower.” After JD did, they/he probably got confused with the key raises of Amen, since Elvis sings the line “I got a woman” in a wrong key and the band plays it in another (correct) key. After that Elvis welcomes the loud crowd, promise to sing old ones, new ones, high and low. Every now and then throughout the concert he interplays with his fans.

Thanks to the person who shared this on the net in 2005.

  3. Wonderful share. I dig a lot of the 1970’s Elvis recordings. The man had a golden voice and what a entertainer. His renditions of My Way live were more stellar than the great Frank Sinatra’s.

    Thanks BigO

  4. The title of this release is borrowed from Elvis’ own announcement (between ‘Polk Salad Annie’and the Band Intros)”I like to announce: I’m running for president…”

  6. I added See See Rider and I Got A Woman from Elvis in Jackson for a complete concert. Listen closely - it sounds like the Charlotte concert is narrow stereo.
