STEELY DAN
Detroit 2000 [no label, 2CD]

“The Second Theater We’ve Blown up this Year”, live at the Pine Knob Amphitheater, Detroit, MI; June 25, 2000. Excellent soundboard.

Thanks to Buttmanos who shared the show at The Traders’ Den.

Buttmanos wrote: “Uncirculated. By far the best sounding recording from the 2000 tour.”

To which Phantom Engineer noted: “Interesting, I wish I knew the backstory on this. Definitely not the stereotypical bootleg soundboard. I have just listened to a few bits but this sounds like a professional recording. Which has its pros and cons. I guess why i’s stereo. Not my ideal setlist but a great download none the least. Thank you.”

Buttmanos replied: “Well, Roger Nichols [the late recording engineer/producer] recorded all 2000 shows with hard-drives that allegedly crapped out (failed to spin-up) before the band can do anything with them. Because the sound is seemingly “mixed,” this may be a recording from that collection.”

Lineage: Soundboard > DAT (model unknown) > Lossless Wav Capture > Cubase SX Wavelab 5.0 > Waves S-1 imager (for widened stereo separation and balance) > Steinberg Wavelab 5.0 for track indexing > Wav files > FLAC Frontend @ Level 8 > Trader’s Little Helper

  2. Thank you so very much for this. Great sound quality! I love Steely Dan so freaking much. Have you heard Fagan’s brand new solo CD Sunken Condos? Very tasty.

  3. Cool to see this listed. I’ve been to many shows at Pine Knob, the first being Eagles in 1974. “On The Border” was their latest album and the show at Pine Knob was the first one after Don Felder had joined them. He was with them originally when they were Linda Ronstadt’s backing band pre Eagles. Too bad he still isn’t. Get his new cd it’s great!

  8. the info i can offer here is that the reason this sounds the way it does is because it was intended as a possible live album for official release and later canceled. then it was considered theyd sell copies of each show the way pearl jam genesis allmans hot tuna and other bands do. the manager evidently changed his mind on this but i have never seen any reason for this written anywhere. ive seen the sbds for at least 12 shows on this tour. most of them are incredible quality. they are all mixed. make of that what u will.

  9. Back again to say that now I’ve had chance to listen to it I can confirm that the sound here is tremendous. If the recording and mix really is the work of the late great Roger Nichols then now I know why they called him “The Immortal”.
