New Orleans 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Voodoo Experience, City Park, New Orleans, Louisiana; October 26, 2012. (Broadcast on October 28.) Excellent webcast.

The upside is that Neil Young & Crazy Horse are on a roll - they are on fire. The downside is that, given Young’s catalogue, he could have played a much more varied set. But this is still a great time to collect live Neil Young - the sound is great and the performances are equally great.

This is what Keith Spera ( Times-Picayune) wrote:

In their jeans, T-shirts and work boots, accented by gray, thinning hair, glasses and/or a paunch, the four members of Neil Young & Crazy Horse looked like the guys who constructed Voodoo Fest’s main stage. Instead, they were the guys who deconstructed it… Young, bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina and rhythm guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro muscled through two exhilarating hours of especially stout guitar rock. If Gary Clark Jr. was a fighter jet at Voodoo, Crazy Horse was a squadron of B-52 bombers…

In his book, Young revealed that he had, on a doctor’s suggestion, given up both pot and alcohol after a lifetime of indulging. A clear head apparently agrees with him. He was animated, laughing and clowning with his bandmates in “F*!#in’ Up” and elsewhere. And his playing, concentrated at the middle and far end of his guitar’s neck, was superb…

At 11 pm, as an encore of “Like a Hurricane” blew itself out, Young sacrificed his guitar. He tore off the strings, scratching them against the instrument’s pickups to produce more distortion. As the guitar lay prone, he contemplated it and nudged it with his foot, as if to see whether it was really dead. It was. In one of the greatest Voodoo sets to date, Young, abetted by Crazy Horse, played it to death.

  2. hey bigo, i’ll keep checking back on tuscaloosa, al. it was the day before this.

By Ed Saad on Nov 5, 2012

  3. Sorry Ed, but the show you requested, as far as we know, was not recorded.

2012-10-25, Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA - (not recorded)

By admin on Nov 5, 2012

  4. ok, just my luck. i’ll just have to watch youtube clips, i guess. thanks.

By Ed Saad on Nov 5, 2012

  5. Another Neil Young?? Yawn.

By Dave on Nov 5, 2012

  6. Dave - This site is about MUSIC. Another Neil Young maybe a yawn for you but it’s a gold nugget for me. Over time you’ll see great posts that you like and maybe I won’t, but I won’t whine about it. And Ed Saad - good to see you back…

By TDC on Nov 5, 2012

  7. dave - if it were just another aud recorded show and there were no historically significant performances i would understand your groaning. but here we have a sbd sounding recording. we dont have that many of these with this series of songs. yes we have austin and central park and eventually farm aid hopefully. but with this band this year doing these songs and even older ones in this style on this tour…its just important to try to own all one can get when one can when its available in fm / sbd / tv / etc. quality. high end recordings are hard enough to come by as it is. to find them by important singer song writers and people like neil shouldnt be taken for granted. just like u cant have too many dylan sbds. had this been an audience recorded show tho.. id be groaning too.

what i dont understand is why dylan hasnt done even one song from tempest live yet.

By darth on Nov 5, 2012

  8. thanks tdc!

if tuscaloosa, al wasn’t recorded, i’d be happy with boc’s 40th anniversary show with the original band tonight in nyc. i’m sure somebody will tape it.

other shows i wouldn’t mind having that i was at are: robert plant-alabama theatre, b’ham, al 8.12.12, dylan-bjcc arena, b’ham, al feb 2002, springsteen-bjcc arena, b’ham, al nov 2002, kiss-bjcc arena, b’ham, al sept. 1996 and april 2000. i could use kiss-the pyramid, memphis, tn july 1996 too. the melvins opened up.

i passed on the kiss offered a few days ago. it’s probably good, but i have the summit, houston, tx 9.1.77. it’s the same setlist. i have several kiss shows. a good one is dodger stadium, los angeles, ca 10.31.98. the version i have is called halloween circus, and psycho circus was messed up. it was a partial track then cuts into shout it out loud. then shout it out loud is complete on track 2. i couldn’t find a better psycho circus track so i just ripped it from the video off youtube. it sounds ok. it’ll do now it’s a complete show.

  9. Thanks for another great Neil Young set …. much appreciated. Pity there has been a dearth of Bob for good while … cheers anyway.

  10. Sorry - off topic. Surf guitar pioneer Eddie Bertrand died Saturday from cancer at age 67. The Bel-Airs star is remembered for co-writing and performing on 1962 hit “Mr. Moto.” Bertrand also fronted Eddie and the Showmen. He was a regular performer until 2010, when he fell and broke both his hips.
BigO has a wonderful box set of Surf Moods. Perhaps its time to post that up again in memory of Eddie.

  12. Anyone know if Neil’s played Driftin’ Back live yet? That is one song I’d love to hear….. (And a nod to darth for his support of live Neil & The Horse ‘12: fabulous, spirited stuff. Best Neil listening in years…..)

  13. Hello Ed

Regarding Robert Plant, we had already been told by our webhost to remove all content related to “Led Zeppelin” and all their band members.

Some of the shows from Robert Plant’s current tour are available for sale at - for example, London (July 12); Rio de Janeiro (October 18); Belo Horizonte, Brazil (Oct 20); Buenos Aires (Nov 1). No idea if any of the American dates will be on sale.

  14. I was having a lot of trouble trying to get this earlier but patience has paid off in spades. This show sounds incredible !
    Long live the Horse !
    Thanks big o .

  15. hey bigo, ok. except for sun ra, this isn’t my lucky week for shows i’ve been to. no regrets on zeppelin or plant. i have the plant & krauss show i was at, page and plant show i saw on 6.1.98 at bjcc arena, i got one plant show from you and i have 57 zeppelin show so i’m probably good.

i’m not really collecting dylan, springsteen or neil young, at the moment. only cause i have several shows each, and the only shows i’m really interested in by the above are shows i was at.

i tried contacting joe moudry on facebook who supplied the sun ra tracklist, but i haven’t heard back from him yet. his tracklist is probably correct, but because track 2 is a bigger file size it’s possible there are two or three songs in one big song. when i listen to it, maybe some of the songs will sound familiar.

By Ed Saad on Nov 6, 2012

  16. oh yeah, i did get the plant and krauss show you did offer in march 2009. it’s good. well i’ll tell you i did get every zeppelin show you did offer, except for the earls court shows. i got 5.24.75 and was able to fill the missing track, in my time of dying. the others were missing too many songs.

what’s amazing is you can still find zeppelin shows in flac on guitar forum, but they are for premium filefactory members. mp3 boots seem to be scarce. i would love to have empire pool, wembley, london, england 11.20.71 and atlanta 1973. may 4, i think is the date. no luck.

keep the great shows coming. i’m liking posting again. it’s nice being missed.

By Ed Saad on Nov 6, 2012

  17. THANK YOU for capturing this…only my second time seeing Neil, and I loved every second of the show. To say he still has it is an understatement. So glad to not have to rely on youtube to enjoy this one again. Keep on rockin’, Neil, and keep on capturing/taping tapers!!!

By JP on Nov 7, 2012

  18. A big THANKS for the continued shares on this tour. Each new recording is sounding better and better. And for those complaining about the extendad jam at the end of “Walk Like a Giant”: you obviously didn’t grow up listening to Meddle or Foxtrot. Just sayin’…

By golgo hakase on Nov 7, 2012

  19. Actually show could be better than the last two post. It’s pretty neat how the tempo on Love and Only love is played a bit fast, then they slow it down just before the last verse. The back around vocal on powderfinger are excellent, nice wide stereo.. and the new songs are really sounding better. They sound amazing. For guys this age, if only Hot Tuna played with this fury these days.

By Max on Nov 8, 2012

  20. if only hot tuna could find their outlets again. i havent seen anything live by them in years. the few bits and pieces that leak out are not that incredible. nearly nothing since jorma’s birthday shows at the beacon.

By darth on Nov 8, 2012

  21. Inspiring show. Too bad Neil has not yet played Driftin’ Back… There seem not to be much variation in his setlist… still… a good FM or SBD is never lost, and this is also a good show.

By Psyclist on Nov 9, 2012

  22. psyclist - i cant even imagine him doing a 28 min song live. hard to believe he does giant live. but when he does he cuts it down to 15 mins sometimes.
do u remember the 37min jam that he streamed and that i think this site offered for dl a bunch of months back? if so.. i wonder how similar that jam was to driftin back? its kinda hard for me to compare jams. i would try to compare it but i cant right now because i dont have that track on hand. if u do perhaps u can compare it. it came from a studio session crazy horse and neil was doing earlier this year. its definitely one of my fave items.
how many other songs on the new cd has he not yet done live?
still no songs from tempest done live. lol.
and ot - yall got the 2nd of 2 stones songs from grrr! ? ? ? one more shot.

-I’m sorry to hear this, Darth. It’s a real shame.

    the newest video

By darth on Nov 12, 2012

  28. jack - theres nothing to be sorry about. its just that the drive that the track is on isnt in my possession at the moment so i cant compare the two tracks. its no big deal. i have way more music than ill ever be able to listen to in one lifetime. or ten for that matter. if i can get over it surely u can. relax.
drop - i cant rationalize spending $10 or so for a cd that has 2 songs on it. if u can thats fine. it wont work for me. it makes no sense to me. i wont do it. i had the first song on oct 5th and the 2nd one on nov 6th. im happy with my copies. i have 3 songs from the 1st of 2 shows they did in paris last month. im not so anal that i bother with the snippets of a minute even when theyre sbd. i need full songs. thats just me.

By darth on Nov 12, 2012

  29. Saw Neil and the Horse last night in Calgary. A great show and if anyone has a recording I’d love to hear about it!

  30. theres an amazing item amongst certain neil fans that only some of us have. the shakey bio in audio book form. its an amazing thing to have. made by some fans with love and devotion to neil of course it took god knows how many hours of work and effort. i started listening to it recently now that i have the time. i dont know how many copies of this there are but its extremely limited. i consider myself very special to have obtained a copy.
i dont know if i have the patience for a 786 page book nowadays.

however…its 2 months now.. and still no fm or tv or sbd copies of farm aid have surfaced. incredible.

  35. the audio book isnt an official product. its not commercially released. therefore its not something anyone pays for. its done by fans for fans. the ppl who created it are the ones who sent it to me. they wouldnt accept payment for it. not even postage.

as for farm aid.. sure the audience recordings are available. thats not what im talking about tho. superb quality video and audio is out there of it. anyone can take the 5 songs from youtube. thats not what im looking for. all of it was brdcst tho. so it exists in mint sbd quality. comprende? sigh.
this is what i mean about having to explain every single damn thing.

  40. Generally speaking, another excellent NY show. That said, this has to be the absolute worst version of “Hurricane” I have ever heard. The high points are smothered by the lows.
