Live On KEXP 2012 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Bumbershoot Music Lounge, Sept 2, 2012 and broadcast Live On KEXP, Seattle, WA. Ex webstream stereo.

Fourteen years is a long time to have “made the rounds” for a career musician and yet not achieve fame and fortune. Since 2009, M Ward has more or less put his own career on hold while developing side projects. The most memorable so far is his partnership with actress-singer Zooey Deschanel, to form She And Him, with whom he has released three albums, including a Christmas one. The other project is a band, Monsters Of Folk, which includes brighter lights from other indie bands. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2009. Around that time, Ward released a studio album, Hold Time, and did not record another album till 2012. Since that time, he has been gigging as She And Him.

This concert is one of several live outings this year as M Ward makes it to the Bumbershoot Music Festival in Seattle. Recent illness has forced Ward to cancel and postpone dates in October 2012 including at the Orpheum Theatre in LA, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and the Jay Leno show. All his concerts this year were to promote his new album, A Wasteland Companion.

M Ward’s voice is of the “sand and glue” variety, suitable for a confessional singer-songwriter. It grates. But there is a joyfulness here that is at odds with this voice. Despite a song like “Sad Sad Song”, Ward is much more the rocker, happy to sing “Rave On”. The guitar solos come courtesy of M Ward.

It is our good fortune that this broadcast was captured and shared by O’B at DIME.
