SHELBY LYNNE
New York 2001 [no label, 1CD]

Live at The Supper Club, New York, NY; November 12, 2001. Excellent FM broadcast.

At the Grammy Awards in February 2001, singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne won the award for Best New Artist of 2000, due to a large extent, to her sixth studio album, I Am Shelby Lynne (2000). Nine months later, Lynne was at The Supper Club in New York introducing her then latest release, Love, Shelby.

It’s interesting that she starts off her set, not with a song off the new album, but with the evergreen Wichita Lineman. In an interview, Lynne said: “I’m a fool for great melodies and great lyrics and that song has both. And those chord progressions are just fantastic.” As an aside - while lots of folks have covered the song, Lambchop deserve a special (trivia) mention - right in the middle of the track, Short, on the Damaged album (2006), the band works in a couple of bars from Wichita Lineman, which should cause listeners to do a double take.

Back to The Supper Club. This is what Jon Pareles wrote in The New York Times: “She is no longer holding back the ample voice that drew country producers to her in the first place, and on ‘Love, Shelby, the songs are gussied up with gleaming, elaborate production. But onstage, she reached into her new songs more deeply. She spoke-sang verses in a lowered voice, then opened up on choruses.”

“Her last song, Tarpoleon Napoleon,’ was a quiet waltz she wrote about her father, who shot both her mother and himself. She sang it alone, recalling both his strength and his demons in a voice that merged painful memory with consolation.”
