THE WHO
Orlando 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Amway Center, Orlando, Florida; November 3, 2012. Good to very good audience recording.

Pete Townshend walked off the stage during the encore for the November 1 show in Sunrise, Florida. Rolling Stone reported that Townshend left during “You Better You Bet” without letting his bandmates know. Before leaving, Townshend appeared to be unhappy with the sound monitors onstage, yelling they were “too loud” before walking off. The band continued into “Baba O’ Riley” before ending the show. Townshend didn’t reappear. Townshend’s brother Simon later said on Twitter, “Pete walked off tonight because it was too loud. Was a good show but had some technical problems.”

Two days later, there was no such walkout when the band played Orlando.

This is what Jim Abbott blogged at the Orlando Sentinel:

Two versions of The Who worked to turn back the clock on Saturday at Amway Center. On stage, the band’s two remaining members – frontman Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend - tackled the ambitious 1973 concept album “Quadrophenia” with impressive gusto for guys knocking on the door of their 70s.

At the same time, the senior citizens had competition from video clips that played on the giant screen behind the band. Scenes of The Who in its prime might have unintentionally pointed out the advanced age of the current band.

No worries…

Musically, the material was delivered with precision and power by a big ensemble that included drummer Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr’s son), bassist Pino Palladino, guitarist Simon Townshend (Pete Townshend’s brother), a trio of keyboard players and a brass section. Remarkably, the mix was good in the often troublesome arena.

Daltrey and Townshend didn’t interact much on stage, but offered throwback microphone slinging and windmill guitar strumming on the rocking “5:15.” There was more of that in an encore that included “Baba O’Riley.” “Who Are You,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “The Kids Are Alright.” Same goes for these old guys, who are aging gracefully.

Thanks to Datfly who recorded and shared the tracks at Dime. Datfly noted: “Some crowd excitement from being too close to The Who is obvious in some spots. A few mic glitches.”

Thanks also to ethiessen1 for the artwork.

  2. Thank you, BIG O! I saw the 3rd date of this tour in DULUTH, GA (a northern suburb of Atlanta). The show was exceptionally good! Pete had guitar problems….. I imagine all the sound people have been fired by now!

Setlist was good, and all the films Roger put together in the background were awesome!

I also saw RUSH on Nov. 1st and HEART on November 7th here in ATlanta… if you can get those or any really good SOUNDBOARD or ALD copies of shows by those bands on this tour, it would be MOST appreciated!

  4. Easily one of the best moments of this show is Daltrey announcing, “The old bugger on guitar, Pete Townshend!!!”

  5. theres a few heart performances that theyve done recently and made available via tv fm webcast etc. and with all the appearances theyre doing on various shows on tv and radio it shouldnt be too hard to compile an interesting collection of em if u do a little work. like for example on 10-2 they were on the kelly & michael show. they performed fanatic. if u do a search on youtube and arrange the results according to date u will find some stuff u might not know about. then u can convert to mp3 and make a cd of 10-15 of these performances. ive done this with tv performances of bands i like. be careful not to bother with cam shot recordings aimed at tv sets. theyre horrible.
as for rush.. try tube. they post items quite quickly. especially on rush. its one of the owners fave bands.
