BARBRA STREISAND
and The Billy Ross Orchestra
Los Angeles 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at The Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA; November 9, 2012. Good to fairly good FM feed, hissy.

Thanks to Scooter123 who recorded the show and sharing it at planetrocklosslessbootlegs.

Scooter’s notes:

Barbra Streisand returns home to the Hollywood Bowl, where she last performed in 1967. Streisand shows are scarce as hen’s teeth and the rarity continued with a cord issue, which scrapped my audience tape, but I did have the benefit of a local FM feed, which was really low gain, and had to be boosted resulting in a noticeable hiss. If that bothers you, then better pass on this one.

Climate control isn’t really possible at an outdoor venue like the Hollywood Bowl, but the Gods knew better than to rain on Barbra Streisand’s homecoming this cold and wet evening. Clouds threatened, winds blew, but Mother Nature wasn’t about to launch an all-out assault on this Brooklyn-born, Malibu-enthroned diva for her homecoming after 12 shows throughout the country. Temperatures were in the low 50s with a brisk wet wind.

Icons like Babs don’t have to prove themselves night after night, but she still has her pipes. The Streisand of 2012 is a vulnerable if imperial semi-operatic diva who carefully conserves her power by cleverly constructing the show, so that she never sang more than four to five songs at a time, and had time to rest. She still maintained her reputation for strong-arm perfectionism. She kept talking about toe warmers and heaters and was continually fussing with the wrap that was the only thing standing between her glamorous black ensemble and the wind. Yet no cold November breeze was going to thwart her homecoming.

Elegantly supported by a 60-piece orchestra and chorus conducted by Bill Ross, Streisand played den mother to the teenage Italian singing trio Il Volo, who sang “O Sole Mio.” She innocently flirted with jazzy instrumentalist Chris Botti, who accompanied her in an emotionally resonant “Lost Inside of You.” She paid tribute to Marvin Hamlisch (using the original orchestration for “The Way We Were”) and Jule Styne (giving us a taste of what her Rose in “Gypsy” would be like). The “Way We Were” was absolutely flooring.

Her son, Jason Gould, also performed with a duet of “How Deep Is the Ocean?,” a kvelling Streisand made Jewish mothers of us all: Such a nice a boy, and he sings almost as good as his mother! The show was a family affair, as Streisand’s younger sister, actress and singer Roslyn Kind, joined in during the encore after the two listened to a few operatic strains of their mother on tape.

There was politics too, naturally enough, but celebratory remarks about the election were saved for the most part until the end, when conservative fans could make a beeline for the exits without making a scene.

Listen to Barbra live is always a pleasure and being at her home town is moving, specially form me and Kirk who flew from Buenos Aires Argentina and Perth Australia to be there
I enjoy the Los Angeles show, but i prefer the Brooklyn’s one, probably because i was there.
