GEORGE JONES - RADIO JAMBOREE 1963

December 7, 2012 – 4:43 am

GEORGE JONES R.I.P. 1931-2013

George Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” has died. He was 81. Publicist Kirt Webster says Jones, fondly known as The Possum, died Friday (April 26) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure. Billboard reported that Jones, known for his clenched, precise baritone, had No. 1 songs in five separate decades, 1950s to 1990s, and was idolized not just by fellow country singers, but by Frank Sinatra, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and countless others.

GEORGE JONES & THE JONES BOYS
Radio Jamboree 1963 [no label, 1CD]

Live in the studio, 1963. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Thanks to the person who shared this on the net in 2007.

Uploader’s notes:

I don’t know anything about this set, which was given to me by a generous and very knowledgeable musician and music fan from Ohio. George does a lot of Hank Williams songs here, but I don’t think he was promoting My Favorites of Hank Williams - his second album of Hank’s material that had come out on United Artists in 1962. He refers to I Can’t Change Overnight as coming from “our latest album” and that’s on I Wish Tonight Would Never End from 1963, so that’s the date I’ve established here. I don’t think that song was ever re-recorded during the Musicor years (1965-71).

This material has never been released. In an effort to add a bit of period flavor I put together the faux-LP sleeve with the title Radio Jamboree 1963 using the photo from his Golden Hits Volume 2 album on UA. George’s spoken introductions are worth the price of admission alone, but it’s great to hear the Jones Boys knocking out these performances; nearly every track commences with a sawing fiddle. Real country music for real country music fans (and if you’re not one you should be).

  9. Once, you posted a 1979 concert from Houston. I’ve listened to that all day. Truly fabulous show. Before one song, he says, “I want to apologize for not being up to par here tonight. They got me drunk the night before last and the night before that, and I new I was comin to Houston and I wanted to be right when I got here and I was too right when I got here.”

I have it, but it would be good to post it again if you can.
