Warren Haynes’ Christmas Pre-Jam [no label, 5CD]

Live at The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina; December 14, 2012. Good to very good FM broadcast, slight broadcast hiss.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time.  Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”
- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

The Concert for Sandy Relief on December 12 was so massive and generated so much publicity that other benefits were certainly dwarfed by it, including the annual Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam [Haynes is a founding member of jam band Gov’t Mule], in aid of the Habitat For Humanity. Hopefully readers will take time to listen to some/all of these tracks and even contribute to this benefit.

Thanks to DooDee who recorded the show and shared it on Dime.

This is what DooDee noted:

This post is all about freely sharing some great music, spreading the vibe of these bands, increasing sales of their goods and attendance at their shows, promoting the great work of Habitat For Humanity and having a little fun.

The Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam, an annual benefit for Habitat For Humanity, celebrates its 24th year in Asheville, NC in 2012. This is an incredible annual event where an amazing list of musicians donate their time to participate - all proceeds go straight to the cause. Warren always manages to bring a great group of musicians together for an even greater cause.

Warren stages a shorter pre-jam before the real jam the next night at the Civic Center. Now short is a relative term meaning different things to different individuals. Here’s Warren’s definition - about 40 songs clocking in at just under four and a half hours…

One of the highlights of this event for me each year is the cool cover songs. Among the artists covered this year - Pearl Jam, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, CSNY and Bob Marley.

This is an FM with some minimal fuzzies here and there (we’re still using the barbed wire surrounding our pastures, tractor parts and coffee cans to jump the FM up to the house out here in the country) but these are mostly unnoticeable during the musical portions…

As has become a holiday tradition, here’s one for y’all to enjoy. [Note: Readers can also make a donation here.]

Thanks also to CrazyMama for the artwork.

  4. Beautiful! And wonderful artwork - love the stained glass effect, CrazyMama! Question: I don’t know much of Sheryl Crow, other than her first super hit. She is mentioned on the cover, but not in the liner notes. What songs did she perform on? Also, the artwork CD spine shows Dec. 9 as the date, where the rest of the info shows Dec. 14th. Thanks very much Big O!

  8. If you’d like this on 4 CDs instead, omit track 105 - Warren Talk, add the first 6 tracks from CD 2 to CD 1. Start off CD 3 with the remaining 2 tracks from CD 2. CD’s 4 and 5 unchanged. You even have room (on the last 2 CDs especially) to add related bonus tracks, if you got em. CD1=74m, CD2=72m, CD3=54m, CD4=61m.

  10. If you would like performances from previous Warren Haynes Christmas Jams 2003-2011, go to and search under Warren Haynes. There are dozens of shows of individual bands from previous years that you can download for free, like Phil Lesh, Derek Trucks, and so on. The Lee Boys concert on Dec. 15th 2012 is already available, and it has a different setlist. You also might try searching under the other performers from Dec. 15th.
