KEITH EMERSON R.I.P. 1944-2016

Keith Emerson, founding member and keyboardist of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and a prog rock legend, died on March 11, 2016. He was 71. His bandmate Carl Palmer and the trio’s official Facebook confirmed Emerson’s death. TMZ reported that police found Emerson with a single gunshot wound to the head, though they could not confirm that Emerson died by suicide. “We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected,” the band wrote.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music, Keith Emerson,” Palmer wrote in a statement. “Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come. He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humor, compelling showmanship and dedication to his musical craft. I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did together.”

After discovering the Hammond and Moog in his teenage years, Emerson grew into one of the greatest keyboardists of his generation, first as a member of the Nice before founding the prog supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ELP formed in 1970 after Emerson, guitarist Greg Lake (formerly of King Crimson) and drummer Carl Palmer, a veteran of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, joined together for a project that would better showcase their musicianship. - Rolling Stone

Des Moines 1977 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium, Des Moines, Iowa; June 12, 1977. Good to very good audience recording.

Thanks to the person who taped the show; to Orangeboy for sharing it at The Traders’ Den in 2006 and to Slowburn04 for the artwork.

Orangeboy commented: “Notes from a great ELP fan: …it’s an amazingly important show in ELP history (and I would argue rock history) not just because it’s a rare recording of the orchestral tour, but because it’s the very day that the orchestra was dropped to avoid complete financial ruin. It’s a bittersweet day in ELP history.”

Edgecroft, at The Traders’ Den, added this bit of history:

After the massive Brain Salad Surgery tour of 1974, ELP took almost three years off from performing live. Keith recorded a piano concerto and Greg did a bunch of songs with an orchestra. At some point, they decided that instead of putting out three solo albums, they would put out a double album with a solo side each and a group side, which also featured an orchestra. Works Vol. 1.

They decided to go out on tour with a 57-piece orchestra and a six-person choir, each instrument individually miked. The whole thing was a massive undertaking. From the beginning, they knew that it could be financially disastrous. Because of union contracts with the classical musicians, they could only play three or four shows a week and couldn’t travel more than 100 miles a day. Everything had to go right to even break even. But they so believed in what they were doing that they went ahead anyway. They knew it was mad but they didn’t care.

Well, things didn’t end up going so well. They were relying on three massive outdoor shows to cover the costs of the rest of the dates of the first leg. The one in Chicago was a great success, but another was cancelled because of a Led Zeppelin riot and the other because of poor ticket sales. They were bleeding money. I guess they lost millions, in 1977 money.

The entire tour with the orchestra lasted only 12 dates. This is the final date. This is the day that the dream died. Before orangeboy shared this with us, there were only four recordings of this first part of the tour that have surfaced, and one of those is incomplete. From the sample I’ve heard, this is by far the best recording of any of them. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing.

They did keep paying the orchestra during the time they were out recouping their losses as a three piece and they did bring them back for three shows in July in New York and a final show in Montreal at the end of August, but this is really the end of the orchestra tour.

By the way, the classic ELP song From The Beginning (from 1972) was only ever performed in the 70’s at these 12 concerts.

  1. 79 Responses to “ELP - DES MOINES 1977 (WITH ORCHESTRA)”

  2. I was lucky enough to see the full 57 piece @ MSG in NYC. (and ELP 10 more times that year in the “3 piece format”). “From the Beginning ” was replaced by Greg Lake’s “Still You Turn Me On”. Great stuff. Thanks, bigO!

  3. Saw this tour twice (after orchestra was dropped). Wonderful memories…

By Tom on Dec 30, 2012

  4. I saw them in March of 1978 at The Omni in Atlanta…. this was the WORKS VOL. II tour by then… they were good, but I couldn’t imagine the orchestra… that seemed like quite a bit of excess, EVEN IN 1977-78 terms!

They also played the OMNI in late June of 1977…. the orchestra was billed as being with them, but I never heard if they were indeed with them or not. After reading the above, it sounds like they were not. The outdoor show that was cancelled…. was that TAMPA? Spring of 77 saw a Zeppelin riot in that city… I knew 2 people that were there…. someone ought to write a book on JUST that show!

  5. the incredible shows that took place in nyc from march or april 77 thru oct that year are some of the most memorable and incredible shows for one year and in fact 8 months that i can remember of any period in my life. thank god shows were so cheap back then. average tickets for huge venues were only $7-10. small shows were $3-5. anyone with a few bucks or the ability to talk his way in.. or a few smarts was able to see some incredible shows at that time. it was nearly the end of my high school years. i didnt yet start my photography but i was doing all i could to see what i had to. i helped friends buy tickets who were scalpers and in so doing obtained amazing tickets to see the shows myself without having to spend anything. sometimes helping the roadies bring in equipment would get me in. other times hanging at the backstage door would get me in and would even get me backstage to meet the artists. too bad i didnt have a camera back then. i did get some autographs tho. nothing worth keeping probably. not like they were on 8×10s or anything like album covers. not til later on when i got smart. nyc had incredible venues. from radio city to the bottom line to the garden to the beacon theater to some of the theaters on bway. there were so many clubs that had bands back then that would eventually become huge. cbgbs and the mudd club and max’s and palladium irving plaza lone star cafe and it goes on and on. later on in the early 80s from say 80-84 i would guess i saw over 1000 shows in that 4 year period.
i cant imagine wanting to be anywhere else in the 70s and early 80s for music. i only wish i was a little older to have appreciated things that i didnt get to see and the things i did a little more. like maybe 10 yrs older. but then id be 62 now. and one day closer to death as floyd said. ok thats all.
ps - thank u for this post of elp. i didnt have this anymore. i did once but i had lost it back in july 2002. i didnt think id ever have it again. there is one other show that comes close to this one in quality but its not complete.

  6. Second show we saw would have been part of the Works 2 tour now that I think about it.

By Tom on Dec 31, 2012

  7. Awesome post, BigO :) great show, shame the full show was not taped (looks like the taper missed the first couple of songs, maybe late arrive to the venue??)

Does anyone have any of the July 1977 MSG shows? especially the July 8th show? I would love to get one of those - the boot known as “Velvet Couts Of Pirates” (yep, they mispelled ‘coats’) is well known, but seldom circulated.

@Darth - you have some great memories, buddy, some great concert experiences from an incredible time in music… I used to go to a lot of shows between 1979 and 1985 due to the ticket prices being so low. Now you have to take out a second mortgage to be able to see concerts on a regular basis LOL

Best wishes to all who download and enjoy this show… have a great 2013, everyone :)

By Jeremy Bender on Dec 31, 2012

  8. @Tom - the orchestra would definitely NOT have been with them at the Omni, if it was after the date of this Des Moines show. The only orchestra dates after Des Moines were the three MSG shows in July 1977, and the later show in Montreal that was filmed/recorded and released as “works live”.

  9. oops…. brain-fart on my part LOL My comment to Tom should have been addressed to “The Russian Assassin”.. sorry guys :)

  10. Looking forward to downloading and listening to this since I was at the show. Main floor had no seats set up and everybody sat on the floor. And they took the time to make that barn actually sound decent. My room mate was a classical music major and the night manager at the nearby hotel where the orchestra was staying. He told me the next morning that the musicians were wandering around looking shellshocked as they found out after the concert that they were all being let go.

  12. jeremy - i have spent countless hours looking for the msg show for u. i had it in the 80s. it wasnt very well recorded. it certainly isnt complete. i had the record itself. i probably still do since its elp and i saved certain lps and dumped others but i cant get to those anyway. i put most of my lps and cds onto cassette tape in 1988-95 and then dumped many of the originals saving only the ones that meant the most to me. it seems many original boot lps have skyrocketed in value. who knew boots would ever be worth $100-500 each? thats just ridiculous. if i knew this id have never gotten rid of them when i did. my fave elp boot is the callow crash and idle eyes with star trek outtake snippets from devil in the dark in between the songs. what a strange boot. i even got the band to sign that for me.
in any event i searched for the show u wanted ever since i saw your first request on here and on guitars101 and i just give up. ive literally invested way too many hours and cant find it for u. im sorry.
my best suggestion is to join an elp group on yahoogroups or another area similar to that and make a request that way. also try looking in a newspaper or magazine like goldmine or similar periodical that allows ppl to advertise such items for sale.

  13. I was fortunate to see them as a three-piece in Fresno during that tour. Still have the ticket stub. One of the most incredible concert experiences of my life. For years, Greg Lake has had the date I saw them wrong on his website, even though I’ve tried to correct it. He had ELP playing in Milwaukee that day. Would love to get a copy of that Fresno show, which allegedly circulated from a soundboard recording back in the day.

Once again, I truly appreciate you taking time to search for it… :)

  19. Jeremy Bender….very good! Thank you for the clarification. June of 1977 was a busy month at The Omni…. The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, ELP, Bad Company… Zep and Floyd were there just a month or so earlier.

And it was 1977… most of those acts were out supporting classic lps! Seems like just yesterday!

Take care & Happy New Year to you, my friend!

  20. one last cursing rant as the year comes to an end. sigh.

By barth on Jan 1, 2013

  21. “what the hell is the point in your post?”

I can only speculate, but Woodie’s probably referring to your bottomless treasure trove of trivial information which interests no one other than yourself. The vast majority of your blathering, and even the brief drivel, rarely draws a response, probably, as you say yourself, because we don’t read something we don’t like.

Answering your question is not harassment.

By Dingus on Jan 1, 2013

  22. answering a question not asked of u.. is. especially when u do it that way. u dont know if what i post is of interest to anyone else other than myself. u are ASSuming. u always ASSume. u call it blathering drivel etc. u dont have a clue. there has been repeated posts of appreciation which u choose to ignore. im fine even if ppl dont respond. if my postings are appreciated by even one person which evidently they are.. then thats fine. and that person doesnt have to actually say so with a posting. life isnt about proving things to u so that u know whether or not people appreciate things i have posted on here. this isnt all about u. u know. just like when i posted the specific detail about tube offering the stones ppv and immediately following this u posted the exact same information giving the link which anyone could have found on their own. however u wouldnt have even known it was there if i didnt announce that it was finally posted. now u will deny this and say u knew it anyway. u didnt of course since its a wonder u even know how to turn on your computer. u just wanna continue to cause a disturbance. thats why u answer questions that werent asked of u. thats why u use more than one name on here. thats why u continue to post offensive harassing annoying disturbing ignorant ridiculous mind-numbingly stupid posts. because u have nothing better going on in your life and u feel the need to harass others. the site here was doing just fine til u slithered along and felt like u needed to make yourself known. trust and believe me when i say there are far more ppl on here who wish u would go away and leave me alone than there are who wish i would stop posting. i can absolutely guarantee this. u are not offering anything anyone wishes to see on here. u give nothing to this site. in fact u detract from it. youre an imbecile. a parasite that feeds off others. whether it be their misery or the joy that he gets from others watching peoples misery. its the same thing. u werent raised properly and u clearly have issues that arent going away anytime soon. youre protected online so this is how u act out. u cant get away with what u do in the real world so u found a nitch. u must be proud.
im here for a different purpose. i sometimes seem like i have time for u. i really dont. i have lots of time but u are a massive waste of it. u are a scumbag. thru and thru. u have no redeeming characteristics. there is no good in u. u have never had anything positive to say about me unless it was backhanded and intended as sarcastic. i have tried several times to get thru to u and reason with u. there is clearly no way to do this. i had hoped u would eventually go away. sometimes we hope that bad things happen to those deserving. sometimes they do. very often in my life with those who have f’d with me eventually their shit has come back to mess with them in one way or another. ive seen it happen 100s of times in my life. it has given me a little smile. im sure there are countless times when i dont even know what happened to someone in my past but because of how they mistreated me their lifes karma got worse and they ultimately paid for it in one way or another.
my karma is pretty good. it could be worse it could be better. im happy with the way it is now. i treat ppl fairly. u dont. if there is a wheel that fixes things so that what comes around goes around.. then u have a shitload of bad karma coming your way whether u believe in it or not. i wouldnt wanna be u.
if someone walks under a safe falling out of a window it doesnt matter if u believe or not.. youre gonna get hurt.
im sure u will comment in response to this. u always do. u cant help yourself. u comment when my words arent even to u. so of course u will comment when they are. its a new year and youre the same fucking asshole u were last year. what else is new?

  46. The comment above about dropping the orchestra in June is NOT correct. They appeared at MSG in NYC for 3 nights in July 1977 and the orchestra was there with them. Also noteworthy was the teleprompter for Lake, just in case. Pirates was a new song then and there were a lot of lyrics! They did eventually drop the orchestra
(they had to for financial reasons!) but early the next year, they continued their tour to “help the balance sheets”. They also appeared in both Ithaca at Cornell University and in Syracuse, both not on that list above.

  48. no one claimed the list is complete. but u didnt offer a more complete list. all u did was offer 2 shows without dates mind u that may or may not have actually taken place. all i did here was present 2 lists that i had found thru searching online and found some very nice listings of reasonable length for the tour schedule of those 2 years. it gave people something to work with. my intent was basicly to help jeremy. the other crap that the idiots posted here is just useless worthless drivel. i saw 6 or 7 shows on this tour. 5 of those include - definitely both nites at the garden. princeton nj phila pa and nassau li ny. in fact the nassau show was brdcst over the radio. my friend with me kept trying to whistle between songs so that he would recognize that sound on the tapes when he got them. as it turns out u can hear him. no one sounds like him. i didnt go with him to too many shows. haha.
too bad i didnt start taking pics til nearly exactly 2 yrs later.

  53. I attended the final show of the three night run at MSG with the orchestra in July 1977. It was a lot of fun — ELP were vilified for being pompous and self-indulgent (and in prog rock, that’s saying something), but they didn’t seem to take themselves too seriously, especially Emerson (who plays a Hammond B-3 backwards on his lap?). I think they relished being over the top — that’s why Brain Salad Surgery is such a firecracker.

  63. Thank you for posting this—this is great!!
I saw this tour in Oakland at the indoor arena in 1977, also sans orchestra. A few memories:
The Babys and Journey were the back up bands-just before Steve Perry would join the band (they were trying out some other schmoo)
The bass and bass pedals were so loud you could feel it in your chest (AWESOME!!!)
Some stoner chick right in front of us chugged a small bottle of 2 fingers Tequila and passed out before the lights even went out. Funny stuff

  74. I was there in Des Moines that night. What can I say? To this day, I have never seen anything else like it. Being the type of person I am, I went home and decided to begin studing classical music. (the rest is non-history :)…) I saw them again in 1992 in Minneapolis.

  78. Hello,

Could i suggest that people simply use these postings to exchange useful links to similar shows, as this is helpful to all of us who enjoy this stuff.

If all you want to do is show off and insult each other…find another site.

I thought it had stopped but, sadly, it goes on and on and fucking on…..

    Sort it out BigO
