Oakland 1968 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, Oakland, CA; May 22, 1968. Very good soundboard.

Dislikes California
‘cos it’s Reagan and damned
That’s why the Lady is a tramp

Before Frank Sinatra immortalised My Way as his song, there were many that vied for its place. You can hear a whole range of his greatest songs on this single CD that captures Sinatra in his prime at a fund-raising concert for presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey on May 22, 1968. Although not known to be political, Sinatra moved in political circles mixing with the Kennedys and, in the song, The Lady Is A Tramp, he throws in a reworked verse showing his disdain for actor Ronald Reagan, then governor of California. Sinatra was already doing it his way. You can hear an audible gasp of disbelief from the audience.

The Oakland concert was the first time a cabaret act was opening in a sports arena. Sinatra had the savoir faire to pull it off, singing comfortably and effortlessly, changing the words here and there, with the band and orchestra following his every whim. That voice was never better.

The recording is professionally made and for a limited time unofficially released as a bootleg CD. The original bootleg is hard to find and also includes Sinatra’s reworking of “High Hopes” for John Kennedy’s presidential campaign as a bonus. Rock stars who campaign for causes weren’t the only ones doing it. - Michael Cheah

  9. I am here often and I really enjoy the great posts. Thanks BigO! Too bad that there are the comments by this darthtroll which are just garbage you have to weed through. I almost get the feeling that he/she will be excited just to be mentioned, even as a clown but I had to comment anyway.

  10. I’m with you JB. We live in a time when one person thinks their opinion is more than that, just one person’s opinion.

  25. any one got a copy of this concert i could acquire
    Sinatra at Oakland 68

By Ray on Dec 16, 2015

  26. Ray, unless you are talking about a flac or wave file, you can acquire each song above - I’m assuming you’re using windows - by right clicking on the blue highlighted “Track 01″ for instance, then choosing save file as into a directory that you’ve named, for instance, “Sinatra Oakland 68″. Then do the same for each song going down. You can do this on any album that is open. I’m kinda confused, because I thought you have been on here many times before.
