Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert 1973 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA; Broadcast on April 18, 1973. Excellent mono soundboard.

The audio tracks from this show have previously circulated but as uploader eddiethecat noted, this is a very substantial upgrade to other circulating copies. Eddie also thanked chilton for the DVD upload on Dime (source of this show).

Meanwhile, wellclay posted this comment at Dime:

This has to be the performance Lester Bang references when he talks about Van in his Astral Weeks essay where he tries to boil that essence of Van down into something that you can put into words and talk about.

“1974, a late night network TV rock concert: Van and his band come out, strike a few shimmering chords, and for about ten minutes he lingers over the words “Way over yonder in the clear blue sky / Where flamingos fly.” No other lyrics. I don’t think any instrumental solos. Just those words, repeated slowly again and again, distended, permutated, turned into scat, suspended in space and then scattered to the winds, muttered like a mantra till they turn into nonsense syllables, then back into the same soaring image as time seems to stop entirely. He stands there with eyes closed, singing, transported, while the band poises quivering over great open-tuned deep blue gulfs of their own.”

  2. Rock Concert! That brings me back to high school days. A nice post, though I have to disagree with the air date. Rock Concert made its debut (with the Rolling Stones) in September of 1973, so its impossible that this aired in April of that year. In fact this performance is from the 4th episode, originally aired 11/2/73(featuring Van, Ritchie Havens, & Mott The Hoople). Clinton Heylin, in his biography of Van, notes that Van made a “Valuable publicity appearance” on Rock Concert in April of 73. I think that the correct timeline would then be that the show was taped on 4/18/73 and broadcast on 11/2/73. That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  5. Is this the same band as It’s Too Late To Stop Now?

By Eric on Feb 1, 2013

  6. Eric, I believe it is the same band, though maybe without the 5 string players. The band is known as The Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Its too late to stop now was recorded at shows around 5/73-7/73 at the Troubador in LA, Santa Monica Civic Center & The Rainbow Theatre in London. It truly is one of his best bands.

  7. BigO: Thanks for this great posting of Van at the peak of his powers, and with his best band ever. Saw him around this time in Eugene, Oregon and he just killed! Thanks again.
