France 1981 [no label, 1CD]

Unknown Venue, Dijon, France; October 5, 1981. Very good FM broadcast.

On February 4, 2013, singer-songwriter Reg Presley of The Troggs died from lung cancer. He had also suffered a “succession of recent strokes”. Presley was 71. The Troggs, with their brand of punk and power pop, had a number of hit songs, including Wild Thing, With A Girl Like You and Love Is All Around, which was covered in the 1990s with huge success by Wet Wet Wet.

The BBC reported that Presley had announced his retirement from music a year ago after being taken ill during a concert in Germany and being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Thanks to woffDLV who shared the tracks on Dime.

woffDLV notes:

From the Rummy Rumsfeld tape collection. An annoying DJ is talking into the music now and then to tell  the listeners what they hear, after Reg Presley announced already… Some radio interference can be heard in the background, otherwise a very good sounding recording.

Thanks to davies51 for the artwork.

  4. Timmy although they may be cowardly when it comes to World Wars, the French can be quiet violent when it comes to defending their radio shows so please be careful…we don’t want another world war where they betray the Allies and side up with the Axis! Now please play nice and i WIll make some Kraft Dinner and hotdogs…cut up of course!

  11. Jesus, what a sad bunch of rectal passages… The French are a cowardly race? Hmmm, let’s review - America ambles into a ‘World’ war when it has NO choice and not before [Yay, Democracy!!!], is the only nation to use a Nuclear device [on civilians… ooh really tough], then spends the next 60 years or so attacking countries who are generally armed with no more than some pineapples and sharp sticks… and the French are cowardly? Jesus Christ, give the native Americans their land bock or compensate them for stealing their country and almost wiping them out and then come back and sneer, you racist pigs! PS the British aren’t much better, they hang about like dogs waiting for crumbs at the table of the USA and then when they piss off, do all the cleaning up while their masters trot off to McDonalds to try and be the most obese nation on the planet.
Great little Troggs gig, by the way - thank you! R.I.P. R Presley

  12. I gotta admit this country does have faults, but I wasn’t here when we took it from the Indians neither were any of my friends…and the same goes for slavery…tired of getting blamed for that too. You know why France’s new Navy has glass bottom boats? So they can see the old Navy…well, gotta go oui oui

  13. not that this is a political area to discuss this particular subject.. there is an area for this.. btw… but.. u should know that the ones u call native american indians.. didnt start out here. they came from europe and northern africa as well. some came over the land bridge from russia across to alaska down thru canada into where the usa is too. different indian tribes settled in different parts of the country. we had north western indians and south western and mid western and many were in the middle of the country and then many were along the eastern seaboard. up and down the coast. depending on when they got here and from where they came and where they settled etc. but no one was native to this land. not north america anyway. i just wanted u to know that they may have gotten here first but the land wasnt so much theirs to be taken away as u suggest. yes they were massacred. i dont fault your history there. just wanted u to know that native americans arent as native as u think. youre welcome.

  14. More treaty talk from darth.

“they may have gotten here first but the land wasnt so much theirs to be taken away as u suggest.”

If they were the first and only people here then the land was theirs for the taking. There’s no need to discuss anthropological theories here. Case closed.

By Tonto on Aug 10, 2013

  15. darth , historian now as well?
hardly,LOL we all know his hysterical [historical] take on bootlegs. It was a shambles,
he conveniently ignored about 50 years of the true story because he knew nothing about it and then denied it even happened.
you can`t rewrite history darth , the land was theirs, get over it.

  16. Hello, I’m living in Dijon and I would have informations about “le concert du 05 octobre 1981″…in Dijon…Thanks a lot if anyone has pics…It was a long time ago, I was at the “amphi Aristote… Merci beaucoup…Paul…

By Paul Arblade on Aug 14, 2013

  17. if theres no need to discuss anthropological theories here.. why are u adding your two cents then closing the discussion after u have had your say? how exactly does that work? just because a people settle on an otherwise unexplored piece of land.. that is 3000 miles wide and 1500 miles north/south doesnt mean they suddenly own all of it. there was a hell of a lot of land here and more than enough for the many many people that chose to come here and take some from all the different countries that explored and settled. im not saying that those that got here and massacred masses of people to do so did the right thing. i dont know if the history books are full of accuracies or not. we may never really know. a lot of this is as unknown as biblical stories altho probably more likely reliable than stories 1000s of yrs old since its only 100s of yrs old. i tend to believe that the europeans did pillage and destroy all in their wake. but i dont believe that the entire land we call the united states suddenly belonged to the indians just because they got here first.

now.. as for my info on bootlegs.. yes i stand by what i told this idiot on that several times. u dont have to agree or like what i told u in so far as what constitutes a bootleg but the fact remains. u ran to look things up. i didnt have to. i already knew the information. u didnt. i dont automatically figure that if someone i dont like types something on here that it is likely wrong and spend some time trying to find inaccuracies and then posting corrections here. u do this even when youre wrong. u will ignore the facts that i specify sidestepping certain parts of what i say so u can come off as seemingly knowing something i didnt know or being right. for example.. when i said that the first bootlegs of the modern era were great white wonder and liver than youll ever be.. and i specifically stated that i was talking about rock and that jazz bootlegs had come out in the 40s and 50s but that i had not been talking about those. of course u couldnt pay attention to that. u couldnt help yourself.
u conveniently ignored what i said hoping that u would come off looking like u knew stuff u didnt know. oddly enough u didnt know anything at all on the subject. i did.
u had to go looking things up online. im the one who has been dealing in these things since the early 70s. i dont think u were even alive yet. were u?
just cuz u say that i knew nothing about something doesnt make it so. fact is.. u knew nothing whatsoever about the entire subject til u looked it up in order to try to prove me wrong. in your efforts u learned a little bit but as they say.. a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. im sure that in the reading u did u may have come across a few sentences that explained to u what i tried to explain. but u chose to ignore that cuz it would mean u would have to admit i was right. far be it for u to say holy shit.. darth is right. u couldnt bear to do that. it would kill u.

ultimately i am correct on the history of bootlegs whether u like it or not. u dont own and never will own a single wax cylinder the likes u described. obviously i was talking about records. and obviously i was talking about modern music. i specifically stated non jazz. u can argue all day long about this. u know youre full of crap and i know it too. the more u post about this the more u prove it.

  20. ‘just because a people settle on an otherwise unexplored piece of land.. that is 3000 miles wide and 1500 miles north/south doesnt mean they suddenly own all of it.’

Maybe they didn’t own ‘all of it’ - but the parts they did settle on WERE theirs and were undoubtedly stolen from them, I can’t see how anyone could miss that fact. But…Americans aren’t alone in that, every country’s done the same thing in the time before world border lines were so conclusively drawn and every bit of territory clearly allocated, my own included. It’s all history now.

  21. if theres no need to discuss anthropological theories here.. why are u adding your two cents then closing the discussion after u have had your say? how exactly does that work? - darth

Because it’s a music blog, darth.

Anthropologists have long debated the theory of migratory occupation of the Americas. There’s no need for any of us to debate this issue on a music blog. That’s my two extra, and final, cents.

darth, what do you think of The Troggs concert bigO posted here?

By Tonto on Aug 15, 2013

  22. darth: shut the fuck up!!!!

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Aug 15, 2013

  23. but if its a music blog why do u get to comment on it then close it? u didnt answer that question. why do u get the final say on this? who says u get to make the decision to end the discussion with your comments? btw its not only a music blog. this just happens to be the music area of it.

if its case closed why are u continuing to discuss it? why wasnt it closed before u even commented?

my thoughts on this show? i was never that huge of a fan of the band cept for the few songs i was familiar with. this show is very good but it isnt one of my faves. i listened to it twice. i have others that are better. i think theyre a better studio band than a live band. many bands are. some are better live. i prefer bands that are better live than studio. altho there are some that i prefer studio albums and have never heard anything by them live. i suppose the majority of those would likely be progressive or german electronic bands or psych or neopsych type bands.

By darth on Aug 15, 2013

  24. so much for that idiot being done eh?
as i said in that other posting after u said i should shut up.. im not here to shut up. i know u read that cuz u responded to it. u need to get over it. im not going to shut up. get over it. if u dont like what i have to say.. stop reading it.

By darth on Aug 15, 2013

  25. btw its not only a music blog. this just happens to be the music area of it. - darth

I hope we can keep it that way by exercising self-control.

By Tonto on Aug 15, 2013

  26. yeah self control.. like not deciding to have our say on topics and closing the discussion when we’re finished talking. i gotcha now. i think i understand.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Aug 15, 2013

  29. youre not helping me. your name doesnt ring true. ive already explained this to u in a previous posting. i didnt thank u then and i have no intention of thanking u now. and i have no intention of shutting up. we’ve been thru this. stop wasting my time and yours and everyone elses here.

  31. You make me remember that….!!
Bands omitted in here were probably….. Not that clean. Weren’t they?!
This is a great Troggs show and I’ve listened to it for years, of course, a pleasure to see it appearing here too!! The reason why I didn’t even write to (before we were so rudely ….) after the passing of Reg was because….. What to say…..
They weren’t playing and recording “Evil Woman” without reason…….

By Serge Zéni on Nov 18, 2017

  32. ……………………………………………………………….. The crowd barked for strange favourites: John Cale’s “Chicken Shit”! Retribution Gospel Choir’s “They Knew You Well”! Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long As I Can See The Light”! and so ding-dong and on….
    — Sorry, all you mean and wild rockers, but I don’t sing these songs, warmly replied The King Of Sainte-Hélène. Instead, he began to tell this tale, about the days when he had met John & Yoko & Jimi Hendrix in a street.
    — And so what the spell happened after? Did you talk to them?
    — No, I did not. But, unlike some other, they looked at me!
    — Miaw! Arf! Mow’! said the crowd with undesrstandable… envy……………

…………………………. The last songs from his set were played on his casio, with inimitable introductions:
—- A song that I rot for Jiji Zeanmaire but it didn’t work, so maybe Florent Pagny will record it one day… This is cold “I Will (Ant Your Womb)”. Hope you like it…..
The crowd just loved the song.
—- Great! Great! Great! Miaw! Arf!
Then, the last one: “The Radioesthésiste Man Who Has A Picture Of Me Now To Have Fun With….”
…………………………………………………………………. Needles to say, the audience wanted more. He came back and tested the action/reaction…
    — Are you still poetry-thing….? You’re not convincing…. Ass if… Gig it to me! All your loot!

(From “Reg Presley’s Grateful Hearts Club Band–Part 3″, wait until you hear and read this!!
