New York 1997 [no label, 1CD]

Live at West 54th St. Studios, New York City, New York; June 12, 1997. Excellent soundboard (extracted from TV/video broadcast?).

Think Sonic Youth and songs such as Death Valley ‘69, Teenage Riot, Star Power, Confusion Is Next, Expressway to Yr. Skull and (I’ve Got A) Catholic Block, to name just a few, easily come to mind. They may be noisy but there is a melody and there is a groove which sinks right in. But then again, Sonic Youth were also experimental and, in June 1997, the group released the Anagrama EP - the first in a series of experimental and mostly instrumental releases put out on their own SYR label.

It’s likely this show was recorded to promote the Anagrama release and is a wonderful (mostly) instrumental soundtrack that showcases a slightly different aspect of Sonic Youth. The tracks were recorded for PBS’s “Sessions at West 54th” television programme (telecast in August 1997).

Thanks to greengoblin who shared the tracks in 2006.

Have you ever heard the SONIC YOUTH lp from 1990 called “GOO”? That is their best lp! I love that record!

  5. Dear BIG O, Thank you very very much for this show! If you can get any awesome sbds or FM Bcasts of SONIC YOUTH from 1990 - 1992… I will take them! To me, that was their most productive period.

Didn’t SONIC YOUTH do an lp of SONIC YOUTH versions of MADONNA songs? I would LOVE to get that as well.

  6. hey russian assassin, yes, i have goo, but i am partial to daydream nation, sonic nurse and rather ripped. i like the song on sonic nurse called arthur doyle hand cream.

i met arthur doyle. he’s from b’ham, al. i saw him play at bottletree here in b’ham, al 9.16.06. i spent time talking to him, and i apparently was the only one who wanted to talk to him. he was friendly, and he signed my little notepad. i still have it. i have the show on a cd-r. check him out. he played with sun ra and thurston moore, among others.

if you’re into free jazz or avant-garde at all, arthur doyle played with rudolph grey’s band called the blue humans. he’s on live at cbgb. i think, sonic youth opened up. i don’t have it, and it may be out of print. however, it may be on a blog out there.

  7. hey russian assassin, i have a good sonic youth boot from dusseldorf, germany called hallucinogenic preserve. i got it years ago off guitar forum. it’s a nice one. most of the versions i have seen out there are missing the last song, the diamond sea, but i have the complete show. i know this cause i downloaded it 3x before i got the complete show.

now looking around the net i found this sonic youth show. you’ll have to open the text file and copy and paste the links. the uploading links should work. i may get it.

for more detailed information on this boot go here:

  8. hey russian assassin, i just checked the uploading links, and they work. just click the uploading link, and ignore any download accelerator screen, if it pops up. then select download file, open the text file and keep it open but minimize it. copy one link at a time in your browser and download it. it’s a bit annoying and or work, but free does rule. if you get stuck or need help, write me here.

i got tons of great boots from viva. you should get that misfits boot called psychomania. killer!!!
