KEVIN AYERS
Bremen 1976 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Post Aula, Bremen, Germany; August 19, 1976. Good to very good FM broadcast; slight hiss.

Kevin Ayers, a founding member of Soft Machine and an influential musician in the ’60s psychedelic scene, died in his sleep on February 18, 2013 in Montolieu, France, aged 68. Born in Herne Bay, Kent, Ayers was partly brought up in Asia by his stepfather, a district officer in British Malaysia.

The English singer-songwriter was found dead at his home, where he lived alone, in the south of France around lunchtime on Tuesday (February 19) by a neighbour. Bernard MacMahon, from Ayers’s record label Lo-Max Records, told the Telegraph that the musician had not been ill, but had “lived a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle”. A note was found by his bed which said, “You can’t shine if you don’t burn.”

Thanks to the person who shared this on the net in 2007.

Uploader’s notes:

I received this fantastic recording in a trade with dimeadozen user jazzpunk - thanks jazzpunk! The CDR was converted to wav with Roxio Easy Media 8, flac with Flac Frontend.

The sound quality on this gets an A-. The band on this is Kevin, Andy Summers on guitar, Zoot Money on keyboards, Charlie McCracken on bass, and Rob Townsend on drums.  I believe the correct title of Track 04 is Shouting In A Bucket Blues, but I kept the titles as they read on the disc I received.

  6. Dammit - 68 is not old. Thank you Kevin for EVERYTHING from Soft Machine to the present. I’d also like to thank Kevin for loaning Mike Oldfield his reel-to-reel tape recorder so Mike could record the demo for what became one of the best and biggest-selling albums ever - TUBULAR BELLS, of course. We’ll miss you greatly Kevin.

  7. btw.. there are 2 ayers items on sugarmegs under kevins name -
    KevinAyers1992-04-09RennesFrance.asx
    KevinAyers1994-10-08TheForumKentishTownLondonUK.asx
of course there are many other items where kevin is part of the band. the above 2 items are sbd and aud respectively. first one is 2 cds in length. if there was a massive amount of material available id suggest only going for the first item. however in this case since there isnt and since the 2nd item is a party for the 25th birthday party for gong.. id suggest both items.

incidentally.. mike oldfield has a new cd kinda like a remix of sorts but there has been some added performances to it as well. its called tubular beats. i got it a few weeks ago and i highly recommend it. i had to listen to it a few times to figure out if i liked it enough to recommend it. u can read up on it online for the details. reason im mentioning it here is that kevin worked with oldfield various times in his career.

  10. For Darth: Yes, thanks for the tip on TUBULAR BEATS - I still have to check it out, but it’s definitely on the list. I’m anxious to hear Mike’s new rock album when he puts it out, although I think he’s barely started work on it. And speaking of Kevin, it took me awhile to realize that’s his voice on Mike’s song FLYING START from the album ISLANDS - great tune!

  11. Hey darth, looks like you’re making some new friends! That’s great, buddy, keep it up, one of these days your karma will be in a good place. Your shame spiral was really bad during that bootleg discussion, I thought it might go on forever, until you said you weren’t going to waste your time on it. Good for you darth, you realized you were wrong and ended it. Maybe the next time you might want to do a little more research before making statements like that, just to confirm that you’re right. Hey, I’m just giving some friendly, helpful advice, I’m not being critical. Good luck with your karma, darth, but be careful- it can bite you!

  15. earl - my karma is just fine and in a fine place. i dont need u to tell me to keep anything up. i did not realize i was wrong. i dont know where u got that from. perhaps u arent reading carefully. i didnt have to do any research. i have been living this and dealing with these things since the early 70s and the information i offered is accurate as i explained. i didnt ask for your advice. if it was friendly u wouldnt be telling me how i realized i was wrong. thats a backhanded slap in the face. same thing u did a few months ago the last time we went thru this. youre not being critical huh? sigh.
i dont need u wishing me good luck with my karma. worry about your own karma. i also dont need u to tell me to be careful. and no my karma wont bite me ever. mind your own business.

    http://ttexshexes.blogspot.com/2009/10/kevin-ayers-joy-of-toy-1st-album.html
because the link u gave doesnt really lead to anything. try this instead tho.

incidentally.. the two items i offered the information about from sugarmegs up above are 87mins (1992) and 45mins (1994). just thought id mention this. when i said the 1st item was 2 cds that may have been misleading.

  19. Hey darth, nothing personal dude, but I read the articles the other guys provided, and I’m afraid they were right, buddy. It’s great that you have such positive self-realization, but facts are facts, and they sure had some great facts, didn’t they? And you know what they about opinions, everybody has one! Hey, I don’t remember any backhanded slaps at you from me, maybe you have me confused with one of your harassers. Just look at it as constructive criticism, OK buddy? Good luck with your karma!

  29. mojo - i didnt assume anything. i saw that your link was no good so i posted a working one. thats all. there was no assumption made. so u looked online and found another link to make believe i was wrong. like im supposed to read minds and know what site u meant to post.

earl - so if u read what others say why doesnt that apply to what u are saying about people who have opinions? what are u talking about? u say facts are facts. what facts? things u read that others say become facts because u read them? huh? because u dont remember any backhanded slaps at me means they didnt happen? wtf? no i dont have u confused earl. nothing u said to me has been constructive at all whatsoever earl. youre not my buddy and my karmas fine. the first 3.5 lines of what u posted have literally no meaning at all. but im thinking u were smoking when u typed it.

as for the bootleg postings i have made.. theres no reason to refer to them again. i said what i had to say and theres no reason to repeat it ad nauseum. i explained the history and its not my problem if people didnt understand it. i tried a few more times to break it down in case the first time wasnt very clear and again one or two idiots acted as if i said things i didnt say. they twist my words and misquote me. they dont seem to understand this history and how this stuff works. i cant keep explaining this. so why keep asking me to? why repeatedly try to get me to talk about it? what is there to discuss? its a moot subject and ive moved on. why havent u? im not licking any wounds. i dont know what the hell youre talking about.

By darth on Mar 2, 2013

  30. This is a great show. Maybe one of you sound engineer types with lots of soft- and hardware could do something about the intense level of hiss?

That said, what’s a little hiss (or a lot), among friends?

By Scott Brookman on Mar 2, 2013

  31. Darth , you are awesome. I have never met anyone in my life as full of crap as you .

  35. so can we get back to honoring and remembering one of our pure voices, Kevin Ayers, and the music we all love (and come here for) with kind and loving communication;

and honestly put this pissing contest to rest ?!? please, you guys, DO take this stuff outside, no matter who starts it (or finishes). it’s REALLY, really boring and stupid.

thanks, BigO, for all you do for the music and the world. and for your patience with us.
