Cardiff 1985 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK; November 7, 1985. Excellent soundboard.

There was a time in the early ’80s when one could hardly read UK’s NME or Musical Express without coming across Prefab Sprout. After all, frontman Paddy McAloon has been hailed as one of the great songwriters of his era. While the band performed Cars And Girls, a track that would appear on the 1988 album, From Langley Park To Memphis, they didn’t perform the album’s biggest hit, The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll - probably not written at the time of this show. Still, there are other goodies to go around - Faron Young, Bonny, Hallelujah and the hit single, When Love Breaks Down. Some British pop that mattered.

Thanks to bisonrav who shared the tracks at Dime.

This recording has been available for a few years via the live80 website in the form of a 320kbps mp3. However this is the fully lossless version, for which big thanks to Bob. It’s a gorgeous recording directly off the desk… Horse Chimes is a bit chopped at the beginning, the sound is mixed for live performance rather than home listening, but otherwise a great record of the UK leg of the tour. Possibly missing Appetite, which was usually played, but that’s all.

  2. Thanks. The soundtrack of my youth–this song reminds me of my high school prom date. Music in the 80s was generally awful, but girls liked this and it beat the @! out of most 80s pop. This & Hounds of Love (Kate Bush).

  3. One of the most literate and compelling bands of the 80s. I’ve only found one other live show ever, so this is most welcome. Thanks Michael.
