PAUL ANKA
Paris 2006 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Palais des Congres, Paris, France; April 27, 2006. Excellent France Inter FM broadcast.

Paul Anka can certainly charm his audiences and, as his 2005 album - Rock Swings - showed, he was still willing to go out on a limb and woo even a younger crowd by covering Oasis’s Wonderwall. Nevermind that on the album, he also covered Nirvana’s Smells Like, Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun, REM’s Everybody Hurts and love ballads such as Lionel Richie’s Hello and Spandau Ballet’s True.

While one is glad that he performed Papa, one of the songs from the Times Of Your Life album, one wonders if Paul Anka had ever toured with singer Odia Coates and if such live recordings ever existed. Coates, who died in 1991, had helped made songs such as I Don’t Like To Sleep Alone and One Man Woman/One Woman Man, from Times Of Your Life, such fan favourites.

Thanks to svp, who recorded, edited and shared the tracks on the net in 2006.

  2. Ah yes, the sci fi / horror movie theme song, track 111, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, sung by Rosie Grier to that old rich white actor dude. Theme music to The Thing With Two Heads. As George Carlin sang so elouquently, I sent my sinuses to Arizona, I sent my liver to Peru, I sent my kidney, for the summer to Sydney, but I’m sending my heart to youuu.

  6. Paul Anka toured with Odia Coates in the summer of ‘75 or ‘76. I saw them at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey.

  7. Smells Like Ten Spirits! ! Surely poor Kurt must be spinning at this rendition - everything he railed against in showbiz. Oh, and track 103 should be ‘Mack The Knife’ Oh well, whatever….Nevermind.
