“Americana” Rebekka Bakken sings Tom Waits [no label, 2CD]

Live at hr-Sendesaal, Frankfurt am Main, Germany; February 7, 2013. Ex digital radio stereo.

Visions of the tall, cool blonde from the Scandinavian countries bring back memories of Carlsberg beer, the long cool, golden lager. Rebekka Bakken started as a jazz singer-songwriter from Oslo, Norway. Increasingly, Bakken has strayed from blue light jazz and been thinking and singing American pop culture.

At this February concert in Frankfurt, Bakken takes on Tom Waits and dedicates an entire concert on his songs which she calls Americana. Waits’ songs, dishevelled and like rough gems, benefit from Bakken’s jazz polish.

There’s also the benefit of the station’s big band to add oomph to proceedings. America’s pop culture still casts a long shadow. Thanks to jaype for sharing this at DIME.

  2. Thanks a lot for the Rebekka - been looking for some shows by her for a while. She’s a really good singer, and seemingly very popular i Germany - Norwegian or not. And you’re right - her voice suits the compositiona - as does the big band. But as a fellow Scandinavian, but from the Carlsberg home country I am not completely sure that she would perceive the comparison to lager beer as a compliment :-) (I am not sure I would either)

  3. OK, nothing can be compared to Tom’s own versions. Anyway his songbook is worth listening and explored. Bakken has not the kind of voice I would call outstanding, sensual or unforgettable. But what she and the HR Bigband are offering here is a successful try to interpret songs from the Waits canon.
