ARTHUR BROWN
BBC 1968/New York 1969 [no label, 2CD]

Disc 1: BBC Sessions 1968. Good to very good radio/TV broadcasts. Disc 2: Live at the Schaefer Music Festival, Wollman Rink, Central Park, New York, NY; June 28, 1968. Passable audience recording.

Arthur Brown is an English rock and roll musician best known for his flamboyant, theatrical style, wide ranging operatic vocal style and significant influence on Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, Marilyn Manson, George Clinton, Kiss and King Diamond…

Brown quickly earned a reputation for outlandish performances, which included the use of a burning metal helmet, that led to occasional mishaps, such as during an early appearance at the Windsor Festival in 1967, where he wore a colander on his head soaked in methanol. The fuel poured over his head by accident and caught fire… The flaming head then became an Arthur Brown signature. On occasion he also stripped naked while performing, most notably in Italy, where, after setting his hair on fire, he was arrested and deported… - wikipedia

Those were the days… “The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown”… that really sums it up. Here is a two-disc compilation that is really aimed for the diehard fan/collector. The sound on Disc One is generally fine. While the sound on Disc Two may leave much to be desired, this is what davmar77 wrote:

Except for a few video clips, this is the only Arthur Brown show I know of from back then. It took place in New York’s Central Park in June of 1969. Beware though, it’s rare and you will probably not hear another show unless some who taped in the London clubs comes forward, the quality is not good. Due to the extremely rare nature of this, I’m sure many folks here will still want it.

  2. can`t believe it was all those years ago we watched arthur Brown and his homemade fire helmet on american tv ..tom jones show and ed sullivan.
For some reason I seem to recall him being lowered onstage by a crane on the ed sullivan show, and what a show ..crazy!!! and now what do you get on tv but an endless stream of wannbes trying to sing like taylor swift or justin bieber all engaged in a karoke singing competition. how frigging boring is that.

  3. Totally cool. I used to have a version of ‘Fire’ on cassette that I’d play really loud at parties…around 1:30…..when everyone is starting to get mellow….usually livened things up a bit and caused more than few freak outs…..

  4. Arthur Brown still makes an appearance here and there. Go see him! He still has the pipes and can whoop and holler just like the records!

By Bigdoins on Apr 2, 2013

  5. Great singer, great band – with Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer who formed Atomic Rooster after their stint with Brown.

  6. hey bigo, they mention arthur brown on vh1 metal evolution. bruce dickinson of iron maiden tells a story how he ran into arthur brown somewhere in london. bruce walks up to arthur and tells him he’s a fan and was a huge influence only arthur had no clue who he bruce was. pretty funny.

look up sam dunn on wikipedia and check out all his metal documentaries. i’ve seen them all and his movies.

    best,

  7. Arthur Brown and his bands were (hopefully still are) just hysterical and brilliant I saw him in the 70s the band were dressed in space suits there was a dwarf in a giant wobbly rubber brain and then a wobbly rubber spanish galleon - someone had a traffic light on their head… Their drum machine went berserk and Arthur ended up throwing it at the floor. The audience were in hysterics, the music was brilliant!!! There were amazing projections - amid all the wonderful weirdness they were brilliant the show was brilliant music was brilliant and the audience were weeping with laughter.

  8. Arthur Brown can be found singing with Hawkwind on the albums Canterbury Fayre & Out of the Shadows. He also did an album with Jimmy Carl Black titled Brown, Black and Blue. The two met in Austin in the late 80s where they were both house painters. They formed a company called Black and Brown Painters. Ah- the glamorous life of a rock n roll star.

  9. i was listening today to my 2 cd copy of the crazy world of arthur brown which came out in 2010. in case any of u dont have this.. u should get it. it has 13 tracks on the 2nd cd 6 of which have never been issued previously. some of them are another version of fire.. a 68 bbc session.. and a song from the committee which is famous for being a pink floyd involved film.

  10. i was listening today to my 2 cd copy of the crazy world of arthur brown which came out in 2010. in case any of u dont have this..

where did you buy it darth, we all want to know.

By dropkick sarge on Apr 10, 2013

  11. why do u wanna know? and how do u know that others want to know? i can see that u might wanna know. altho i dont know why u would. but lets assume for a minute u have a reason for wanting to know.. the questions still remain how do u know others want to know and why would u want to know? how can u speak for so many others? why do u attempt to? why are u so concerned with such things? dont u know where to buy cds? does it matter where other people including myself get them? if so.. why? i surely dont give a flying rats ass where u get yours. and even if u said that u bought them from such n such a place that doesnt necessarily mean u did. when other people mention their cds i dont notice u asking them about where they got them. why is that?
btw.. what ever happened to your caps? did u suddenly obtain glasses? or did u finally realize that typing everything in all caps is in fact bad netiquette and its akin to screaming at full volume in peoples faces?
incidentally none of my questions really need to be answered. consider all of them rhetorical. why? because i really do consider u one of the seriously most ignorant pieces of shit ever to own a computer and seriously anything u could possibly say in response couldnt interest me in the least. so just drop dead at your earliest convenience. thank u and have a nice day.

  12. sarge, u got ‘im on the ropes!

By barth on Apr 10, 2013

  13. once again darth where did you BUY your copy ?
I and possibly others have been looking for this disc for some time. C`mon, help us out here, where were you so lucky to find it ?
ps..I explained in a post just last week about getting a new keyboard, hence no more sticky caps.
It thrills me to know you care enough to ask.
have a great day stealing music idiot !

By dropkick sarge on Apr 10, 2013

  14. Darth, did you buy this or steal it from some jerk who allows legitimate recordings to be
    stolen through criminal downloadings?

By arthur brown on Apr 10, 2013

  15. Regarding the two-CD set Darth mentioned, it’s likely he was referring to this: The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown (Deluxe Edition, Esoteric 2010). Those interested can order it here.

    By bigozine2 on Apr 11, 2013

  16. funny how he gets on peoples cases for calling names then does it himself. tsk tsk. i didnt say i stole anything. yet hes accusing me without any proof or evidence of this.
he claims he got a new keyboard but afterwards he says his j was sticking. perhaps if he stopped eating over said keyboards..they wouldnt all have these problems. he asks so many questions and expects answers but do any of us see anwers to questions posed to him? i sure dont. ironic.
he talks about how able he is to use the internet but suddenly he cant find amazon and doesnt know how to do a simple search for a commonly available cd that only came out a little over 2 years ago. so many mental issues so little time.
funny how this time he posts about he and others possibly.. previously he assumed things about others. i guess he had previously checked with others but this time he didnt check. wonder why.
as for them caps.. he stopped typing in caps quite a number of weeks ago. i commented on it then. sometimes he goes back to the caps. sometimes not. then he claims he buys a new keyboard. then the j sticks. i dont think the cap key sticks. i think all u have to do is click the cap key and u can suddenly type in lower case if u want to. its really very simple. anyone can do it. its a matter of wanting to. just like if someone wants to get a life instead of spending all your time harassing someone else in an online forum like this one.
why not just download the music like 90% or more of everyone else and if there are comments to be made concerning the music AND NOT ME.. then make them. like i said.. its just a case of wanting to do it. like using lower case letters instead of caps. just grow up and act like an adult. just do it cuz u want to. because others want u to. because its the right thing to do. stop responding to everything i type. just dont do it anymore. and now go buy the cd u couldnt find that the staff at bigo had to find for u. and stop making accusations u cant back up.

that would be why you have posted two novel length posts since . kind of tickles me to see that i got under your skin as you have been a sore scab for many here for far too long.

By dropkick sarge on Apr 11, 2013

  21. the first posting was 15 lines. thats novel length? i guess with a limited attention span like yours a novel for u would be about that long. have u ever actually read a whole book? did anyone notice how u havent answered a single question? its not that u got under my skin but u make such a big deal of it if i dont respond and u repeatedly post day after day after day if i ignore u. clearly i get under your skin with my postings. why else would u invest so much time and energy into posting comments and messages on this site about me and to me? youre obviously obsessed with me. thats much more serious than your belief than u got under my skin.
u claim im a sore scab here for many. i dont believe thats true. i see a few that post under many names but its just the same few idiots. are u that easily fooled into thinking its many? really? no wonder u thought 15 lines is a novel. the 2nd paragraph is only 22 lines. wow.. novels? are u serious?
ive explained several times in the past.. that responding takes more time and energy and effort than attacking. anyone can point and accuse. it doesnt take a genius. youve proven that. so when i spend more lines to defend and respond u claim u are tickled and think u got to me. theres no winning. if i ignore u.. u say where are u darth? why cant u respond. are u hiding? come out come out. then when i do.. u claim u got to me. which is it???

By darth on Apr 12, 2013

  22. there is no sore scabby darth.

By barth on Apr 12, 2013

by the way, who in the hell names their kid darth?
you want real names , you use one.

  24. did anyone notice how u havent answered a single question?

I`ll answer any question you have when you tell us where you buy your cds.

    GOT YOU!

By dropkick sarge on Apr 12, 2013

  26. I`m curious. I have read through many of your posts darth and have but one single question.
    Is Darth the typical American?
Is his/her intellect and scope of understanding, indicative of the average American ?
    or
do other Americans on this blog site find you to be nothing more than an embarrassment ?

By wendell stern on Apr 12, 2013

  27. Hello Wendell-

    No.

    No.

No. Being embarrassed by darth would imply some sort of personal connection with him, which none of us have or want. Most of us, American or not, find him to be a pitiful, mean spirited, lying egomaniac.

By Dingus on Apr 13, 2013

  28. that`s exactly what I thought mr. dingus!

  29. i used to hang with Arthur actually before he had his ten minutes worth of famedom. he was an absolute tight cunt who would never buy a drink but as a smoker he was handy if you happened to forget your lighter or matches.
