TONY WILLIAMS/POP WORKSHOP
Song Of The Pterodactyl [no label, 1CD]

Recorded at Europa Film Studio, Sweden 1974. Excellent vinyl rip (Out of print vinyl, Grammofonverket ‎– EFG-501 5 101).

Thanks to the person who shared this on the net in 2005. The following note from wasaexpress.net is still relevant today:

Don’t let the title fool you, this has nothing to do with pop. In 1974 Tony Williams was invited to a session in Stockholm and this is the result. They really wanted Billy Cobham since he was the number one skin basher of the day. But since he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, make it, they “had to do” with Tony.

An international all-star band was put together with Janne Schaffer, Wlodek Gulgowski, Mads Vinding and Zbigniew Namyslovski. At the airport after the session Mr Gulgowski asked for an autograph. “For the kids”. Tony Signed a piece of papper, folded it and waved goodbye. When Mr. Gulgowski took a look it said : Billy Cobham!

Naturally, never reissued on disc.

The uploader had also added this note: “So, it’s 31 years since you could walk into your local Scandinavian record shop to get a copy. I think it’s about time it gets heard!”

  2. Thanks BigO! Just a quick sampling, sounds wonderful and wild, beautiful sound. Love the wacky Godzilla-inspired artwork too. Very over the top!

  3. Reminds me of some of Zappa’ work. Worth downloading? Yes.

  4. This is the second record made by this unit. The preceding “Vol. 1″ was released in 1973 and is equally worthy of your attention, should you dig this kind of stuff.

    Great post BigO, many thanks.

  5. POP WORKSHOP now THERE’S a font you’re not likely to see anytime soon on PC’s. Hmmm. You’d have to come up with negative kernling, if I recall my terminology right. Characters that would have to conform to whatever characters are beside it. Characters that would have to be self-aware and aware of their local community, in order to fit in correctly. Conformist thinking to the core. As Jonathan Winters said, “Oops, they’ll take me back to the looney bin.”

  9. I was just seeking this information for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing; at last I got it in your website. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this type of informative sites in top of the list. Normally the top websites are full of garbage. North Platte Roofing Pro, 3765 E. 11. I used to be seeing and hearing MASSIVE sums of chatter in
my social media sites about how precisely the Dr Charles Fat Loss Factor eating plan was
Very very busy changing the lives and bodies of thousands around the globe.
And because of this I was EXTREMELY skeptical but curious,
so I had to get my own copy of the Dr Charles Fat
Loss Factor diet in efforts to conduct an unbiased review.
If all the shouts and cries were PACKED with lies since the
diet simply didn’t work well for others, then I wanted to STOP my website visitors from getting brainwashed and ripped off by scammers who are ONLY interested in making
a quick buck at the expense of others who trust
their word enough to order the Dr Charles Fat Loss Factor diet, reason being.
