Bologna 1977 [Emperor Nobody Remaster , 1CD]

Live at the Teatro Antoniano, Bologna, Italy; May 18, 1977. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Thanks to nobody for all the efforts and for sharing this on Dime.

Original notes:

A full unreleased John Martyn concert at the Antoniano Theatre in Bologna, Italy. He was in top form - as usual, I can say for all I heard of him live. One can also hear some stomach grumbling in between songs: that evening was very hot and maybe he needed something extra to drink… The setlist includes all my favourites, I wish I was there but I didn’t. I saw him playing live almost 20 years later, always in Bologna: I arrived early at the venue, so we stood at the bar him and me alone, drinking beer (his glass was enormous), looking at each other without saying a word. Recorded from soundboard onto cassette tape by a friend of mine: I removed hiss, eq’d, edited pauses to fit on a single cd a few years ago. [Ed: John Martyn died in 2009 of double pneumonia. He was 60.]

Notes by nobody:

Here’s this, an essentially complete, apparently-largely-uncirculated and furnace-like hot night in Bologna… at first I thought it was mono but there are stereo aspects evident if you look at the waveforms and pay attention. From John’s asides between songs it is clearly above 100 degrees Fahrenheit onstage and how he keeps the guitars within a semitone of in-tune is a feat worthy of the musical Hercules that we all know he was, whether we heard him for the first time last week or last century. Other than dialing back some clipping issues in the electroacoustic songs, a few minor dropout repairs plus subtle little tweaks for continuity, I did nothing to further alter this… it seemed like leaving it unvarnished was the thing to do, raw and unadulterated like the man, born with his soul hanging out on his sleeve, you hear on the tape.

If anyone wants to remaster it further so as to noiseprint some more of the hiss out, you are welcome to do so as long as you leave the music up there around 22,500 Khz intact. It sounds to me like what the original notes say it is, a 1st generation feed direct from the desk onto what sounds to me like a chrome cassette situation, probably done by the soundman himself or an accomplice, with the digitization made probably by the original taper. Whether he used the original deck and/or adjusted the azimuth and all that stuff is not specified, but it sounds pretty damn fine in the cans and I am pretty darn picky about these things.

Anyway, celebrate always the life and extraordinary music of JM; roll up a cone, have a good time and share this with the people you love as its author, the likes of which we may never see again, surely would have wanted you to do. Click here for the lossless tracks.

  1. 36 Responses to “JOHN MARTYN - BOLOGNA 1977”

  2. wow what a coincidence. just a few days ago i was perusing the npr web site and found an old mountainstage from 93 that was made available for the first time. its only 4 songs 20mins but its wonderful. perfect sbd quality. and then this shows up. i havent yet timed this but if this is an hour.. and im sure its over that.. it would be a perfect compliment on a cd. otherwise ill have to find other bits that work with what i have to fit on a cd.
i had to actually record the item from the npr site since they didnt offer a dl’ing option. the same day i got that i also dl’d a robert cray a booker t jones a john prine. in fact.. the prine is 10 songs where only 5 had been brdcst originally back in 97. that item would work nicely with the martyn i guess.
martyn was a killer musician. i dont remember ever having the fortune of seeing him live. i dont know of a single item of him on sugarmegs. but i have found a small bunch of stuff of him on other sites. back when he first died a small batch of items were made available on one site i spent a little time on. if anyone isnt familiar with him and u need a recommendation.. if u like fairport convention and richard thompson u will love john martyn.

  3. I saw Martyn in 1977, opening for Eric Clapton at the Jai Lai Fronton on Miami, Florida. Clapton was tremendous but it’s the Martyn show that, after all these years, stays with me.

  4. Great! John Martyn was brilliant at this point in his career. I saw him a few times around this time and he was excellent. One World was really his peak, IMHO.

  5. Yep,loved the guy. Saw him a few times in London around this time. Check out ‘Live At Leeds’ if you want more volume peddle, Space Echo, acoustic lovelyness. Shame about the hiss, peddles me thinks. Thanx for the down load.

  8. Hi people !
Thanks for posting this gig BigO.
John is really missing since he left 4 years ago. I listen to his music since about 30 years and was never disappointed.
Had the privilege to see him in late 93, as he was touring with Spencer Cozens on the keys.

  9. Only was fortunate enough to see John Martyn once but it was unforgettable.
He subbed in last minute as an opener for Eric Clapton in Toronto at the maple leaf gardens.
The regular opening act, Player, could not make or do the gig for some reason.
The crowd loved him, he was personable and very talented.
One guy alone onstage in front of thousands and he had them in the palm of his hand .
Looking forward to this one, thanks.

  13. i didnt lie in any previous postings moh. in mid may 77 i was ending my jr year of high school i certainly wasnt touring with anyone in concert. i also didnt start taking pics til late jan early feb 1980. i moved to astoria queens nyc and there was a camera shop there and i became friends with the owner of it got myself a small crappy camera and started running around the streets of nyc taking pics of tv stars rock stars and movie stars. it seemed pretty obvious where they were and could easily be found so i did it. i continued for 17 yrs of this. i have no reason to lie about it and i havent. during those following years til nov 95 i took pics of bands on and off stage and toured with a select few who invited me to do so. a couple i did so on my own but most of the others i was invited.
as for not seeing him perform.. i dont remember seeing him. i could have and dont know it. keep in mind i saw 2223 shows from 1965 to 96. many festivals in there and i count each act as a performance. like woodstock 69 for me counts as 31 acts. they were full sets after all. in that 2223 number there could have very well been a john martyn especially since a massive amount of those shows were prior to 1990. i use this date as i think i came to really appreciate him more around that time. but like i said.. i dont recall having ever seen him.

By darth on Apr 19, 2013

  22. creatist - nice however.. the 2nd of the 3 is this one. the 3rd has no links that are working since its nearly a year old. i would imagine a request to the owner would fix that eventually when he gets around to it. and the first one munich 83.. the only one that works for the usa.. at least for me is bitshare. its a killer item. i already had it and i highly recommend it. course im a fan of his and got as much as i could when i found them.. especially when he passed. im not that different than many others that do things that way. i tend to realize my appreciation for artists when they pass and need to hear them. if i dont happen to have any of their items on hand it doesnt take a lot of effort to find a few items to listen to even if i have to search them out and re-dl them or in the case of sugarmegs when they have stuff.. i can usually click on things and just listen. in this case since they dont have any jm that isnt an option. normally it isnt a problem with them having over 54000 items. a couple of years back i got their entire collection when it was around 30000 items. in fact i have it on one drive. id love to do that again with everything theyve added since that day but it doesnt seem likely to happen. oh well.
it seems that one of our idiots here has started bringing his harassment from this site to another site. unbelievable. i have warned the other site’s owner about this letting him know what to expect. i told him what he’s been doing here. im hoping it will not be tolerated there like it has been here.
