Forest Hills 1979 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, Forest Hills, NY; August 25, 1979. Good to fairly good soundboard.

Thanks to davmar77 who originally shared this show in 2007 at Dime and it is still being seeded today.

This is what davmar77 wrote:

The other day I was discussing the availability of good quality 1979 Joni Mitchell shows with fellow Dimer Randall. I had mentioned I only needed the Forest Hills SB and maybe an audie or two. I was quite surprised to hear that the Forest Hills SB wasn’t too common so by request of Randall, here it is.

Joni Mitchell from the ‘Shadows And Light’ tour with her amazing jazz backup band of Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. The Persuasions opened these shows and joined Joni on a couple of songs.

This is a fresh transfer from my reel and isn’t taken from any boot. The quality is very good and has some rough spots where the band gets cooking. It’s a little dull sounding but overall quite good. From what i know, all circulating copies sound about the same. Of course, if anyone has a better copy, by all means please put it up. This is the only recording I know of from this tour from an SB source other than the official releases taken from the Santa Barabara concert a couple of weeks later.

Thanks also to Elvin Lazer for the artwork.

  4. that santa barbara vhs tape when it came out was an example of one of those situations where there was no audio counterpart and back then i took the video and made an audio of it. the video is no longer in print and i dont believe if there is a dvd of that show that was ever released it is still in print. its a killer performance and crystal clear. if any of u like this one here i highly recommend that one especially for the metheny and pastorius contributions. initially thats the reason i jumped on it.

  5. darth I am astounded at the number of shows you mention that you either have or taped or are taping or downloading. tell me honestly do you really listen to or watch all of this because there are only so many hours in a day.
It seems to be almost obsessive with you and your collecting.I just can`t imagine wanting all of this stuff and having the time to enjoy it all.

By mamas little cupcake on Jun 11, 2013

  6. i dont mention all of the stuff i dl or listen to. and there is obviously a lot more time than u think for listening to what i dl.
im not sure what youre specifically refering to here but i have much more in my collection than i could ever listen to in my life time. but the idea is that if and when i want to hear something its there to hear it. id rather have it at my disposal than not.
i started collecting music in the mid 70s and lost my collection several times since. im not as obsessive as i once was about having to have it all. and im much more picky now than i ever was before about what ill dl. i no longer use torrents and i dont listen to music 16 hrs a day like i have in the past. i do spend a lot of time enjoying it tho. i enjoy the research archiving cataloguing reading up on and searching out and learning about. i enjoy finding new things and sharing with others. i spend a lot of time helping others fill in their collections and sorting mine and filling in the details of what i have and locating missing things. i download about 1-4gig worth of music a day and sometimes a movie or two a day as well. every week or so i dl a few tv shows as well.
are u really this concerned with what i do or just trying to gather ammunition so u can work out an attack? is how much someone else enjoys the music they collect really that important to u? why? im certainly unconcerned with how much u own or download and whether or not u listen to it and how much time u spend doing so. see where im going with this?

incidentally i have seen 2220 live performances from 1965 to 1995. 3 more in 96. and nothing since til last year. in 2012 i saw 2 events. one punk thing with 2 bands opening for old dead kennedys lead singer jello biafra which was a ridiculously horrible experience and a hugh laurie concert. he is the actor who plays house - the doctor of the same name. hes also a musician with 2 cds out. other than that i have seen nothing. i have taken pics of many many 100s of the performances i have seen from 1980 thru 95 and spent those years also shooting those stars of film tv and music off stage in ny phila sf la etc. i took approx 156000 pics in 17 yrs. some of my photographs extended into 96 and a few days of 02. no i cant share any with u altho i do have a pic of me with gene simmons from dec 84 that i have scanned. eventually i hope to have a site of my work with a front page of the 401 pics of me with the people i have pics of me with as thumbnails on it.

  9. Darth - I share your obsession with collecting and listening, and like yourself, i don’t have the time or opportunity to listen 16 hrs a day like I did when I was young and single, but it’s great to have the items available for when I feel like listening to that particular item. I also had some periods where i didn’t go to shows, after the “young years’ where i went to a buttload (not as many as you, though).

Keep on rockin’, my friend, and long may you run :)

  17. Tremendous backing band but unfortunately this recording is almost unlistenable. I would describe the sound quality of this show as more like fair to poor.

By Zaar Locust on Jun 14, 2013

  18. I agree Zaar, but I have listened to the version of free man in paris about 20 times though.

  20. for those who dont like the sound quality u are unfamiliar with sbd recordings. this was recorded too low and turning it up distorts it but it is an absolutely superb quality recording. there are areas where it is saturated by someone who put it onto tape somewhere along the line and didnt transfer it correctly. but u can hear the clarity of joni’s voice and the distance of the audience. the blanket sound of the audience and the up front sound of the vocals is how u know its a sbd recording. if it was an fm or tv sourced recording it would have more compression and be more listenable and enjoyable to your ears. most people dont enjoy sbd recordings as much as they think they would before they actually hear them. to those people i recommend pre fm’s and fm’s and tv sourced recordings and of course officially released product. even audience recordings that are of superb quality. there are some aud’s that rival sbds in terms of quality u know.
this here recording is phenomenal. if it was that bad.. u couldnt listen to it 20x thats for sure. on a scale of 1-10..this is about an 8 to 8.5 in terms of overall quality. it could only be better if the source was fm and compressed for a better listening experience and if not then if the original levels were done higher so that when i turn it up it didnt distort / saturate.

  22. no problem barth but I did have a link to the complete hour and a half interview with video and I`ll be darned if i can find it now.
a very good buddy of mine , years ago was at a mariposa festival in canada and joni was there giving a workshop, while she was talking he picked up her guitar , strummed it and thought it need tuning[didn`t realize she uses all her own open tunings ] proceeded to tune it and when she picked it up later to play screamed at the crowd who tuned my guitar !!

By dropkick sarge on Jun 18, 2013

  23. sarge heres another one from 1978. i havent watched either one yet they should be interesting. the link u provided has a 104 minute run time. good story about the tuning!
