With the Filarmonica della Scala. Conductor Ingo Metzmacher. Live at the Teatro Alla Scala, Milano, Italy; April 8, 2013. Excellent FM broadcast (by “Il Cartellone - Radio Tre Suite”, Radio 3 RAI).

The Swingle Singers produce covers ranging from modern classics (Björk, Annie Lennox, and The Beatles) to classical music (Bach, Mozart) to Contemporary Music (Luciano Berio, Pascal Zavaro and Azio Corghi). Their arrangements are often informed by jazz harmonies and stylings. - wikipedia

Sinfonia, per otto voci e orchestra (1968) by Luciano Berio [Sinfornia for eight voices and orchestra]. The Swingle Singers were the opening act. The rest of the programme featured the Filarmonica della Scala performing Beethoven’s Egmont Overture op. 84; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C min. op. 67.

  2. Thanks for this. Among my earliest musical memories is the original Swingle Singers’ “Going Baroque” album, which my parents purchased at a performance in the mid-60’s. It will be interesting to hear their namesakes performing much more contemporary material.

  3. I would have clicked on the link sooner if it had read “Berio Sinfonia, cond. by Metzmacher” or something. The piece is undeniably in the top five post-war contemporary compositions for orchestra. And it is always fascinating to hear another performance, as the vocal parts of the piece can be interpreted so many convincing ways. Thanks!
