ERIC CLAPTON & JEFF BECK
Two Blue Birds Fly [no label, 3CD]
Live at the Saitama Super Arena, Saitama, Japan; February 21, 2009. Very good audience recording.
Clapton fans are dedicated, to say the least. Within a couple of hours after the last song, the entire show was torrented on the internet. Not only that, by February 24, a remastered version of the show was already being shared.
Given their age and their stature, it seems that every time Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck pick up a guitar and walk onto a stage, it’s already a historic occasion. Between the two, Jeff Beck comes across more fiery though at this stage in their respective careers, each has nothing to prove. They have paid their dues and if they can give a slick performance, fans are already more than happy and satisfied. Cutting edge stuff is better left to younger turks. That said, Beck is still pretty biting. He still runs rings around Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers while covers such as A Day In The Life and the Peter Gun Theme can only bring a smile to the face.
Inspirational might not be the term that comes to mind watching/hearing Clapton play but he’s certainly entertaining - maybe he needs a full concert to really stretch himself. And it does seem like those days when a second guitarist can egg him on (as what Duane Allman did in the ’70s) are long gone.
Thanks to Henry (henry614) who shared this show [and the artwork] on the internet. This is what Henry noted: “This is a remastered version of the original recording uploaded by STrance over on TTD (and was reseeded by kingfrippson). Thanks dude! My friend ML13 did the remaster intended to share with his close friends… The original recording suffers [from] low volume particularly on Clapton’s acoustic set… and ML13 nails it!”

Jeff Beck is always amazing, and he keeps coming up with new ideas. Eric Clapton is still so great too. What a great combination. Let’s hope they decide to tour together.

Amazing, absolutely amazing. Sound quality is top notch.
I saw the Cream reunion in 2005, Clapton & Winwood in 2008 and again this June.
And according to Rolling Stone, JB and EC are talking dates at the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden.
One can only hope they might invite Mr. Page to help out…..
