ERIC CLAPTON
High Time Birmingham 2013 [Goldfinger Records GFR-079A/B, 2CD]

Live at the LG Arena, Birmingham, UK; May 13, 2013. Fairly good to very good audience recording.

This appears to be quite quick off the block.

Debbie Bennett at expressandstar.com:

Opening with Hello Old Friend, the setlist was a sumptuous mix of Clapton and Cream classics from across the decades… This was a no-frills concert - no backdrop video or lighting effects to distract die-hard fans, just guitar maestro Clapton in jeans and a dark grey shirt, with two large screens giving the audience a masterclass in Fender Stratocaster genius… Some might say the veteran comes across as cold, with hardly a word spoken to the packed arena, and no audience interaction - but it was nevertheless a privilege to watch this legend at work.

Thaks to Andrea82 who recorded and shared the tracks at Dime (”best remaster of my recording”).

  13. Thanks, bigO. Keep the Clapton coming. Unlike athletes, musicians get BETTER with age.

The song NAMES may be the same, but years of playing (as just one example) “Crossroads” have changed the WAY it is played. The rhythm is similar, but it is NOT the same.

    Always worth it.

  18. I’ve listened to five tracks. All strong performances and with sound quality better than the “fairly good to very good” description. Definitely worth a listen for any fan of E.C. His recent bands take the stage, play hard with generous set lists, and leave. Nothin’ fancy, just good.

By Jania on Jul 27, 2013

  19. btw if u like the song crossroads its been mentioned here before its one of 3 songs that ec did with winwood in the band powerhouse pre cream and pre blind faith in 1965 just as he was with mayall. its produced i believe by page but i dont recall for sure on that. the first i ever saw of those 3 tracks was the dble lp history of eric clapton and one or more of them appeared on the crossroads box later on in the 90s. of course the sound of the song crossroads by eric himself has changed quite drastically at each juncture in his career. for him doing it i think the 86 tour is one of the best versions. for prime examples try the garden or metro in boston or ritz with keith. but there are others from 86 too. other great years for it are 78 and 83.

By darth on Jul 28, 2013

  20. eric claptons greatest performance of crossroads was with cream in the late ’60s. it was edited from an extended jam down to about 4 minutes by either tom dowd or felix pappalardi.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvouiDJSTUE

By barth on Jul 28, 2013

  21. well when i said the best version of him doing it im talking about post cream and blind faith of course.
the b/w footage in the link above btw is from winterland 68 btw. and the track itself is not edited in any form. that is the entire song as performed that nite. nothing is cut. the audience recordings prove this. and if u compare that to dallas from oct 25th 68 for example its nearly the same length. the song was never really extended very long. its not like im so glad or traintime which were extended a bit.

By darth on Jul 28, 2013

  22. the powerhouse tracks first appeared on a sampler from elektra called what`s shakin`.

  23. don`t know where you got the idea jimmy page had anything to do with producing powerhouse it`s just another of your pipe dreams. joe boyd was the producer of their tracks which ended up on the elektra compilation.

caveat: darth knowledge should always be check and double checked.

By my real name is not darth on Jul 28, 2013

  24. i was referring to the edited version of crossroads on wheels of fire which was also the single of course.

other live versions of crossroads by cream recorded at oakland on oct 4 1968 and the la forum on oct 18 & 19 1968 also clock in at just over 4 minutes. given creams propensity for improvisation in concert it is indeed possible that an extended version was played at winterland.

eric clapton stated in the liner notes for the crossroads box that an extended version of crossroads recorded at winterland was edited by tom dowd for the wheels of fire album.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossroads_(Cream_song)#Cream

others credit felix pappalardi with the editing:
    http://www.allmusic.com/album/wheels-of-fire-mw0000189640

therefore it stands to reason that the video i linked to on youtube was also edited to match the album version. it would be much easier to edit the video since footage was simultaneously recorded with several cameras of course. please note that the video is not labeled as winterland but probably is since after the song ends jack bruce says “eric clapton please… on vocals”.

one last note… jack bruce has signed with the esoteric antenna label and will be releasing an album in march 2014 and will be touring:

By blue moon tuna on Jul 28, 2013

  27. the version of crossroads on wheels isnt live. its the studio track. it may be edited by tom dowd but the live versions which were usually just over 4 mins were never edited on any live releases. the live clip u linked us to was from winterland and isnt edited by anyone. it is the full version as performed. there were no live versions of the song ever done that clocked in at any lengths so long that they needed to be edited for release.
when u read liner notes that claim that tom dowd edited the released version what it means is that he took various takes of the song and edited them together to get the best studio take worth releasing. its not a single take that we hear in the studio release just as when u hear a beatles track if u read the many sources for what they did in the studio u will learn that often it took many many attempts to get a song just right. sometimes they would splice bits of one take along with bits of other takes together for the final edit to get a releaseable product they were happy with. keep in mind this was 67-68. the same period as the beatles experimenting with tapes and sound etc.
creams live recordings were not edited for release. that would have defeated the purpose of pleasing their fans with what they were buying the albums for in the first place.

as for u referring to the released studio version with your link..thats pretty ridiculous since the link led to a live version both audio and video. first lie.

it isnt possible that an extended version was played at winterland since the version u linked us to is the version they played and the audience recordings are identical. all recordings of the song are relatively the same length. 2nd lie.

as for the editing in the video.. the video was edited to fit the audio track yes. not the other way around. the audio is unedited. the video is.

it isnt jack who says ‘eric clapton everybody eric clapton’ its the announcer at winterland.

blue moon - funny thing about that huh?

i didnt say where the powerhouse tracks first appeared. i said my first discovery of them. when they first appeared i was 5 yrs old. at that age i couldnt have cared less about clapton. i first owned those songs on the history of eric clapton dble lp set. most ppl didnt even know about them til the crossroads box came out.

as for the jimmy page credit.. i did say i believe and i didnt know for sure. u need to pay better attention. he had produced several other things at that time involving clapton and i didnt know which item(s) it included or whether it included these 3 songs or not. thats why i added those words. rather than attempting to attack me.. pay attention to the words that i include with the statement. when u say u dont know where i got the idea.. u dont need to know where i got the idea.. it isnt important that u know where i got ideas from. anyone can look things up after theyre stated here and say aha i found out from looking it up today that u were wrong. see? im going by memory from 40 years ago. youre not. but then im also not hiding on names to mock or harass others on here am i. i left room for error by saying im not sure and i believe.
there are some clapton recordings from the 60s that were produced by page. which one(s) exactly they were escape me.

oddly when i posted a link that didnt work i distinctly remember u and other idiots on here jumping all over me for weeks about it. im sure u wont remember that tho.

  28. fake darth strikes again! there are so many mistakes here someone must have posted these comments using the name darth to make real darth look like a truculent moron.

“the version of crossroads on wheels isnt live.”
EVERY wheels of fire album released says “live at winterland” for sides 3 & 4. u probably dont know this because u only dowloaded/stole/copied the files not the artwork. i should probably stop now but this is easy.

“as for u referring to the released studio version with your link..”
wrong. theres no studio version by cream to link to unless its a boot.

“it isnt jack who says ‘eric clapton everybody eric clapton’ its the announcer at winterland.”
    1. mr bruce says “eric clapton please… on vocals”.
    2. winterland?? thank u for agreeing with me that crossroads on wheels of fire was recorded live.

    “blue moon”
did u drink too many blue moons before making these comments?

“im going by memory from 40 years ago.”
your all too frequent mistake. i’m going with eric clapton tom dowd and felix pappalardis memories and wikipedia and allmusics articles.

i dont lie. neither do eric tom felix allmusic and your beloved wikipedia.

u made several other mistakes but u annoy me and i have a life offline and i want to ignore u.

dont use weather conditions or 40 year old memories to excuse your endless mistakes. whats wrong with u??

By barth on Jul 28, 2013

  29. i didnt go to wikipedia for anything. not one damned thing here. u were the one and those above u were the ones quoting wikipedia. i didnt. i just typed off of the top of my head. if i err’d and screwed up and said wheels wasnt live im sorry. mistake on my part. if i had used wiki or any other site i wouldnt have made that mistake.
u cant use wikipedia and then say that when i use it its no good.. like blue moon’s comment. it just doesnt work that way. if u are going to use it then i can too. however i havent used it in any of my comments this week at all whatsoever. not even once.
if u really wanted to ignore me.. u wouldnt insist on commenting on every fucking thing i post here. u wouldnt have a name that mimic’s mine. u wouldnt respond to every single damned thing i say. u cant help yourself. u cant ignore me u stupid pest. u cant!!!!! thats your problem.
i didnt use any weather conditions as an excuse for anything. i have no idea what youre talking about but then neither do u. what else is new?
then again i didnt claim anything was edited that wasnt. i didnt link to a live clip that was absolutely complete and say it wasnt complete. u did that. now didnt u? lol.
jack does not say what u think he says. its not jack either. its very likely bill graham or whoever was the promoter at the time.

and heres something u will likely not enjoy -

scroll down to march 10th 1968. read the 2 lines underneath the 2nd show info.
sorry but perhaps this will educate u a little. and yes.. there are no studio versions of crossroads done by cream. i made a mistake. im not above admitting this. i have some recordings that are so good and have no audience that i guess i didnt realize that they were live.

  32. darth i would love to totally ignore u but u keep making egregious mistakes in your comments. u know that most music collectors are very detail oriented.

a music neophyte would have seen your boner when you said crossroads on wheels of fire wasnt live. such an obvious mistake makes your other comments suspect. dont be such a cheeky monkey when someone corrects u.

jack say no eric says yes tom and felix havent denied it. i will now correct my mistake and yours- watch the video to its end and u will clearly see ginger baker saying “eric clapton please.. on vocal” into his microphone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvouiDJSTUE

darth i accept your apology and your admissions of mistakes. u should do your research before posting a comment. your memory is not reliable.

  37. hey everyone else, all I did was make a comment. It just seems when someone posts a wikipedia link all hell breaks loose. Everyone starts ranting how that site sucks and dont believe what that site says…but then, Barth posts a link and I guess it’s the holy grail now. You want me to shut the hell up, and you calling people turnips?

By Oblivous to reality on Jul 29, 2013

  38. wait. now its ginger baker saying it? a little while ago it was jack bruce. i guess youre confused.

my apology wasnt about my memory. my memory is fine. the apology was for the subject of the source of the song itself. it had nothing to do with who says eric clapton etc at the end of the song. and u will note its not fillmore.. its winterland. contrary to popular belief.
even tho u didnt apologize.. and u never will i accept your admission of the error u made.

as for shutting up. um. no.

btw.. making one mistake shouldnt mean all other comments are up to speculation. thats just ignorant. and if thats true.. then when u said it was jack bruce that said eric clapton please at the end of the song.. then shouldnt all u say / said all be suspect?
i refer u to the posting way up where on july 28th u said -

    1. mr bruce says “eric clapton please… on vocals”.

    remember?????
    ahem.. suspect?!?!?!?!?
whats good for the goose is now good for the gander??? or doesnt that work both ways?

By darth on Jul 29, 2013

  39. yes its ginger baker. watch the end of the video. i did my research. u didnt. u missed a golden opportunity to point out my mistake. which is the same mistake u made. is this why youre upset?

“btw.. making one mistake shouldnt mean all other comments are up to speculation.”

it does when the mistake u make is so glaringly obvious that a music neophyte would have seen it. it does when your comments show a recurring pattern of mistakes. darth u need to get your ego in check and realize that your memory is unreliable. youre becoming a musical quack.

By barth on Jul 29, 2013

  40. but if u did your research why did u say jack bruce? if u can make a mistake why cant i? didnt u do that research when u have chosen to attack me?? i dont understand. is it a knee jerk reaction when u see my posts to automatically attack me? what is the purpose and point of doing what u do? u claim u wanna ignore me but u seem incapable of doing so. then u claim that what i say is suspect because i make mistakes. but when u do it all of a sudden all that u say isnt suspect. how exactly does this work? i usually dont have to do research when i post comments because what i have in my head is all that i need. every so often i can and will look something up to prove to u and other idiots who need me to back up a claim i have made because u dont like taking my word for things. nearly 100% of the time what i have said has proven to be accurate and correct. yes i have made factual errors but not often. ok so i made a small mistake about the live/studio thing. big fucking deal. u tried to point out how wrong i was and in so doing u made even a bigger goof. thats worse!! youre a fucking idiot!!
no im not upset. i dont get upset at things u say in this forum. youre not important enough to me to get upset with. when u correct someone u cant make a mistake. thats just not acceptable. dont put energies and efforts into going thru that trouble to attack my comments / postings if u are going to make your own mistakes u bumbling idiot.

if u claim that my mistake is so glaringly obvious and youre the one who posted a link to a video that u watched to make a point in this forum.. and youre trying to make me look stupid and actually made yourself look even more stupid in the process then holy crap man.. yes u should have realized what u were doing more so. i didnt have the video to go by. u did. u are the one who not only took the time to look for the clip. u are the one who watched it. and u are the one who typed up the words claiming how i was wrong and u were the one who went thru all that trouble to tell me how its not this person but its that person. and holy crap man.. u still got it wrong. haha. and im the one whose comments are suspect?? haha!!!

no.. my postings do not show a recurring pattern of mistakes. yours on the other hand do. u claiming mine do doesnt make it so. its actually u who needs to work on that ego of yours. my memory is fine. u had the actual footage in front of u and u got it wrong. thats hysterical. i know that if i was in your shoes.. i surely wouldnt have goofed that badly. omg!!
keep trying tho. one of these days u may even get up to the level of beginner or neophyte. i have forgotten more than u will ever know. but i surely remember shitloads more than u know now. u stupid stupid little boy.
i wont be replying further to u on this. i shouldnt have bothered this far.

  42. I`ll take it one step further and say that is not ginger baker`s voice. If you have ever heard ginger speak you will know that is not how he sounds. The video you sent a link too does indeed show mr. baker speaking into his mic but to me is just doesn`t sync and his head turns away before the word “vocal” is said.
the mystery continues. it does sound more like an american voice than a british one. interseting..who is the mystery mc…

By barth on Jul 29, 2013

  44. hi sluggo- i always thought it was jack bruce since he did most of the singing. i was surprised to see ginger baker do the outro in the video. i agree u cant see his lips moving as the words are spoken. i respectfully submit that it wouldnt make much sense for an mc to make the announcement in the middle of the show.

there was a documentary on ginger baker “beware of mr. baker” released earlier this year its now on dvd. i haven’t seen it yet but it looks fascinating. great drummer but apparently quite bonkers.

By barth on Jul 29, 2013

  45. barth..i `m puzzled by this as well..I had always figured it was Jack Bruce as well..
look again at the youtube link and you can see that even Clapton`s vocal is not in sync..the very last word, where he sings “believe I`m sinkin` DOWN, is heard, but by the last word Eric`s head is turned from the mic as well. Now this does say best match in the description..Perhaps this was shot on a super 8 hand held camera or something similar with no audio and it has been paired up with the vocal.

that docu. you mention about Baker is wild..he is a dangerous mofo! LOL..his bio is also highly recommended. LONG LIVE THE CREAM !

By sluggo on Jul 29, 2013

  46. barth, you can hear someone else saying “thank you” over top of the “Eric Clapton lead..vocals.”
perhaps it is ginger saying thanks in his mic and Bruce delivering the other bit. what do you think..i agree it would be pretty weird for an mc to jump in at that moment.

By sluggo on Jul 29, 2013

  47. sluggo, i believe ive solved the mystery. some cheeky monkey has taken the colour video of crossroads from the cream farewell concert and overdubbed the audio from winterland/wheels of fire and converted it to the “best match” b&w video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=becWr0vc6cA

the farewell vid sounds like baker is doing the intro. start each video and freeze it early when they have a closeup of jack bruce smiling. play the videos simultaneously and u can see they match. claptons solos on each song are different lengths so it appears that footage has been altered/spliced on the b&w to sync it with the winterland audio. i was able pause the farewell video for several seconds at a time here and there to sync it with the b&w while clapton is not soloing.

the very ending was cut from the farewell colour video but i believe it is here on another b&w conversion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9FkEjOBJuw
and it looks like youre right- at the end baker says “eric clapton thank you”!

which means that it very well could be mr. bruce saying “eric clapton please… on vocals” on wheels of fire!

    pretty bloody clever innit? blimey!

By barth on Jul 29, 2013

  48. the video is edited of course. the clip shows ginger leaning into the mic but that segment isnt necessarily from that section of the song or even from that song at all. as i said it isnt him. u can compare that voice to his voice on pressed rat. its more than likely graham or whoever was promoting the show at the time. it wasnt jack and it isnt ginger. nevermind the video which is edited to look like it is ginger. some of the video isnt even from the same song which is why it doesnt synch up of course.

  51. sluggo, i believe ive solved the mystery. some cheeky monkey has taken the colour video of crossroads from the cream farewell concert and overdubbed the audio from winterland/wheels of fire and converted it to the “best match” b&w video!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=becWr0vc6cA

the farewell vid sounds like baker is doing the intro. start each video and freeze it early when they have a closeup of jack bruce smiling. play the videos simultaneously and u can see they match. claptons solos on each song are different lengths so it appears that footage has been altered/spliced on the b&w to sync it with the winterland audio. i was able pause the farewell video for several seconds at a time here and there to sync it with the b&w while clapton is not soloing.

By barth on Jul 30, 2013

  52. and another thing- the very ending was cut from the farewell colour video but i believe it is here on another b&w conversion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9FkEjOBJuw

and it looks like youre right sluggo- at the end baker seems to say “eric clapton thank you”!

which means that it very well could be mr. bruce saying “eric clapton please… on vocals” on wheels of fire!

    pretty bloody clever innit? blimey!

By barth on Jul 30, 2013

  53. I pulled out the lp Wheels of fire and played the end of crossroads a few times and I`m more convinced than ever that Jack Bruce says, Eric clapton please…on vocals…ginger or eric says thank you over top.
good work barth , nice to have civil discussions.

By sluggo on Jul 30, 2013

  54. indeed it is my good man. ive always preferred the wheels of fire version of crossroads to any other.

  55. I’ve been visiting this site a long time and used to think the Darth baiting was quite funny, and some of it very clever banter with some great ripostes…but lately? Frankly, some of the baiters are sounding more unhinged by the day - as well as coming across as downright nasty individuals at times. Yeah, the guy is, er, eccentric to say the least…but would it hurt to cut him a little slack every now and then ferchrisakes!!

  56. moronic i didnt reply to that idiot. i commented on the subject at hand. the other idiot was discussing a topic that he was attempting to harass me about. i no longer chose to go back and forth with him on that discussion. i did choose to comment on the existing topic of whether or not it was ginger or jack etc. in the audio of the song. the 2 things are unrelated. plus my comments werent in response to anything he said. they were in response to things others said in the forum. and nothing he said after i said i wouldnt respond to him any further was directed to me anyway. therefore nothing i said was directed towards him. try to pay better attention next time before u look to attack me.

  57. if i may quote from my thesaurus- “eccentric”

adjective: abnormal, aberrant, queer, strange, peculiar, weird, bizarre, outlandish, freakish.

noun: oddity, misfit, weirdo, freak, nut, head case, crank, wacko, kook, screwball, crackpot.

    yer bloody well right danzig88!

By barth on Jul 30, 2013

  58. darth, did you send out invitations to the pity party ?
you should take your own advice and pay better attention, better attention to how desperate you are to be understood and accepted. It is more than obvious you cannot stand to be “misunderstood” and feel the need to correct each and every poster here who doesn`t “get you “.
We realize you have a love of the recorded note but every effort you make to announce or clarify something here you become so bitter so quick.
what time is that party ?

  59. “the live clip u linked us to was from winterland and isnt edited by anyone. it is the full version as performed.” - darth

“the video is edited of course.” - darth

“i no longer chose to go back and forth with him on that discussion.” - darth

because u would rather go back and forth with yourself? eccentric indeed.

or because the research i did and the links i provided above prove that the video i first linked to is mislabeled? it is obviously a b&w copy of the colour video of crossroads from the cream farewell tour with the audio from the wheels of fire album edited in.

  63. but would it hurt to cut him a little slack every now and then ferchrisakes!!

every time he gets some slack he goes off on some new poster. he has called so many people here asshole it isn`t even funny any more. he is an attention seeking child.

  67. Darth, You claim the wheels of fire crossroads isn`t live?
And you wonder why people have no respect for your opinions?

By fast eddy on Aug 1, 2013

  68. eddy - how would u know if i wondered anything? i didnt sit here typing that i wondered this. whered u get that idea from? did i email u privately and say hey eddy i wonder why people have no respect for my opinions? i sure dont recall any such email. i dont remember posting a comment along those lines. so does this mean u made that up? hmmmm. if u read a few postings on this page u will see that i admitted i made a mistake. facts and opinions shouldnt be confused. normally ones opinions and the facts that they are based on have nothing to do with one another. the video that was used didnt match the audio that was used for the youtube clip that was linked here. the source for the audio isnt where most ppl believe it comes from. i clarified that way up there as well. good luck keeping up there eddy. but try a little harder ok? dont post so quickly next time. good try tho.
