BOB DYLAN
Third night in Paris 1978 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Pavillon de Paris, Paris, France; July 5, 1978. Excellent audience stereo. From the unknown taper’s reel to reel master tape.

What did the critics think of Bob Dylan back in 1978?

“…Bob Dylan at Budokan comes as a shock, a sacrilege and an unexpectedly playful bonanza. The illumination it offers is long overdue… But this time the old songs have been recast sweetly, without that self-defeating aggression, in what sounds suspiciously like a spirit of fun. The sanctimonious, Las Vegas-style bastardization of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and the wise-guy tenor of the liner notes (he thanks ‘that sweet girl in the geisha house - I wonder does she remember me?’) echo Dylan’s old evasiveness, even though what used to pass for mystery in him has the look of cowardice now.

“But most of this two-album set is forthright, astonishingly so. Can it really be that Bob Dylan had to go all the way to Budokan, to Japan, to find an audience with a short memory, a crowd that didn’t think he had anything to prove? In any case, the jig is up: he’s given up trying to outdo himself and begun something new.

“A lot of the older songs sound changed just for the sake of tinkering. Many of the more recent ones, like ‘Oh, Sister’ and ‘One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)’ and ‘Shelter from the Storm’, are vastly improved, as if, when they were first recorded, they hadn’t been fully thought through. ‘Is Your Love in Vain?’, by no means the prettiest song on Dylan’s much-underrated Street-Legal, is prettier still.

“The method here is hit-or-miss, and the results are correspondingly spotty. ‘Going, Going, Gone’ didn’t need to be speeded up, and ‘I Want You’ didn’t need slowing down. This version of ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ is too readily comparable to the Before the Flood track, to which it can’t hold a candle. The low point of the set is ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’,’ which Dylan introduces by saying: ‘Thank you, you’re so very kind, you really are. We’ll play you this song - I wrote this, also, about fifteen years ago. It still means a lot to me. I know it means a lot to you, too.’

“A lot, yes. But not so much that it need be crippling. The fire and brimstone are behind Dylan, if only because his adolescence, and that of his principal audience, are things of the past. This hardly means the fight has gone out of him: Bob Dylan at Budokan is a very contentious effort - and, for the most part, a victorious one. On the evidence of the renewed energy of his new material since Blood on the Tracks, Dylan sees a world in which nothing is simple anymore, however hard (as in songs like ‘Hurricane’ or ‘Joey’) he tries to populate it with heroes and villains of the old school.

“He also has at his disposal, as demonstrated by the best songs he’s written since then, the strength and artistry to grapple with his visions. And if the premature embalming properties of his fame have been an obstacle to his progress, he’s done battle with those, too. Bob Dylan at Budokan clears the way.” - Janet Maslin writing in Rolling Stone, July 12, 1979.

Released just two weeks before the Dylan and the band hit Paris was Street Legal in the middle of June 1978. This is the album that for the first time featured Bob Dylan in front of a big band with female backup singers. There are two mixes of this album. The original 1978 mix and the revised 1999 mix by Don DeVito. DeVito was the original producer who didn’t like the earlier mix. Since then, all released versions use the 1999 mix. Buy it here.

If you liked what you’ve heard, Dylan did release a live album from this tour. Bob Dylan at Budokan was released only in Japan by Columbia Records. It was recorded at the Budokan in Tokyo on Feb 28 and March 1, 1978. Due to popular demand, it later received a worldwide released in April 1979. It received a critical bashing for being a show-business type of album, too different from what was expected of a singer-songwriter. From Rolling Stone to Robert Christgau, the album was savaged. But Europeans and we presume the Japanese voted heavily with their dollars and bought the album pushing Budokan to No 4 in the UK. You decide, buy it here.

  5. Great to hear these shows. I saw Bob on this 1978 tour in New Haven. Quite a different show from the Rolling Thunder Revue stop in Hartford. The feel was entirely different but the show was still excellent. Fun to hear the songs live again. I love the Desire and Street Legal albums so this is special. Thanks for the shows.

  6. of course we had the academy of outtakes but thats 33 tracks and doesnt include the entire set and dvds that this new box will include and all the goodies. this set is 56 tracks on the audio cds alone. thats 23 more tracks than the boot we have right there. i think fans who are interested in the band / dylan would wanna know about it even if they had the academy of outtakes. i know i would. thats why i posted the info link.

  9. I hear some blather in the background I just can`t place it….just preordered the new 4cd 1 dvd band release…can`t wait.

  10. why do u care what i do? or how i obtain the music in my collection?

    why?
because i enjoy the idea that artists get paid for their work otherwise nothing new will ever see the light of day. Is this too tough for you to digest?

By dropkick sarge on Jul 27, 2013

  11. So if Darth orders the 4cd 1dvd release, when can we expect the new Band album to come out?

  12. The recording is great … sadly, the printing of the artwork is a disaster. My printer has wasted ten sheets and I only got small the front part … I plead for the artwork to be put up so that we can click on it and copy and paste. I use Undercover and it is great, but pdfs are a pinta … work that out easily.

  16. i dont have to buy it. my putting up the information for other fans on this site has nothing to do with whether or not i buy it. u dont know if im a fan of the band or dylan. u dont know if i buy their music or not. u dont know what i spend money on. its not your business what i spend my money on either. just like its not mine what u spend yours on. and what i spend mine on wont affect whether or not they ever put out more music. theyre not starving artists. dropdead sarge isnt too bright and he doesnt want us to think this he wants us all to be absolutely positive of it. i post a link for people here to know about a new release and suddenly its field day for him to attack me. he wont buy the box but he thinks he has the right to jump on me for his assumption that i wont. i dont need to buy the box. and what u enjoy knowing isnt that important to me. u need to try and find another hobby than sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for me to post on here. your making a fool of yourself again as u can see from the responses youre getting but thats nothing new. lol.

  20. “i dont have to buy it. my putting up the information for other fans on this site has nothing to do with whether or not i buy it. u dont know if im a fan of the band or dylan.”

-we all know you love Clapton and Dylan and the Band its no secret. But , you won`t buy this you cheap bastard. You will try and steal it with an illegal download.

“what i spend mine on wont affect whether or not they ever put out more music. theyre not starving artists.”

    - almost impossible to believe that you claim to be such a huge music fan yet you don`t understand how the process works. You are so typical of today`s entitled crowd that thinks , If I can access it I should own it .for free. No money need change hands. You think Garth Hudson hasn`t hit hard times ? Think again.
danko, helm and manuel are dead their families could probably really use the coin, robertson is probably the only solvent member. You are basically ignorant of economics if you think know one need pay for anything and we know you don`t purchase legit releases because you have bragged for years about your downloads, you have begged all over the internet for free downloads of released music and free book downloads. you can`t deny this, well, knowing you ,you will try but you are nothing but a leech and a pariah of art. It is shameful that someone who claims to love music so much is so devious about acquiring it.
    scumbag.
