Lugano 2013 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Estival Jazz Festival 2013, Piazza della Riforma, Lugano, Switzerland; July 4, 2013. Excellent internet broadcast.

Thanks to Lewojazz for the show; tom_phillips (TomP) for sharing it at Dime and to fastone for the artwork.

TomP noted:

Another great recording from Estival, courtesy of Lewojazz (thanks), the only downside being the announcers again talking extensively over the start of the tracks at a higher volume than the music. I reduced as much talk as I could without removing any music, so hopefully it doesn’t spoil the listening experience.

And David Randall’s comments on Winwood’s gig at The Lowry, Salford on June 24, 2013 is equally applicable here:

Starting with the insistent ‘Rainmaker’ closely followed by ‘I’m A  Man’,  giving Winwood’s Hammond a chance to breathe and the band to stretch out, these were admirable scene setters.  One of our best soulful voices, Winwood is also equally content behind the organ or guitar as he led the band through an inevitably cursory cross-section of his musical history.  His mutton chop whiskers (perhaps in preparation for Glasto) now detract slightly from an ever youthful image.

A trawl through his Traffic past, the brief Blind Faith (if you couldn’t be there in Hyde Park in 1969 this was possibly the next best thing) and a couple of eighties ‘hits’ were punctuated by some extended set-pieces such as the Traffic songs ‘Low Spark…’ and ‘Light Up And Leave Me Alone’.

  2. yes yes!!!! am extremely happy to obtain all the lugano brdcsts. thank u. if there are others that u are able to put up would be gratefully appreciative. i dont have the full line up in front of me but im betting that there were a number of killer sets as there are most years. and since theyre all available in superb quality of course.. these are the ones we should be happy to acquire.
of course it would be nice to get ahold of all and any streams and brdcsts of bands and artists worth hearing. thank u very much bigo!

hard to believe he does one song here from the nine lives album. and except for higher love everything else from his glory days with spencer davis traffic and blind faith. i guess im thrilled to death with this concert to say the least.

  5. Thank you for Can’t find my way home. Might be part of a theme for the weekend. My first listening of Blind Faith’s album in 1974 was a memorable moment.

    1974 ?
    you must be younger then.
I eagerly awaited the lp in 1969, preordered it from our local little “Disc Shoppe” and had to wait even longer when it was decided that the lp cover had to be changed from the nude nubile young lady cover[not ginger bakers daughter either] to the pretty bland band shot.1969 much was goin` on them musically..

By darth on Aug 3, 2013

  9. having compared it to another clip i have from soundstage 2005 (recorded in oct 03). which are always filmed at wttv studios in chicago il.. it seems that the axs concert is just a rebrdcst of that event and not a special event for them. its a 10 year old performance. cant believe it took them 2 yrs to brdcst it. my copy of soundstage is 54mins and its identical to the nearly 7 min clip that i just linked to above. i have both the audio and video of the soundstage set.
the brdcst was 8 songs but if u buy the dvd it has 3 extra songs that were unaired. he was promoting the about time album at the time of the performance. the set list is -

    Can’t Find My Way Home
    Empty Pages
    Freedom Rider
Back In The High Life Again
    Dear Mr. Fantasy
    Why Can’t We Live Together

    Bonus Tracks -
    Different Light
    Walking On

  10. im curious why they didnt include the other 9 songs performed at this concert on the dvd. why only include 3 extras? total of 20 were done.

  15. Sorry Richard Bailey, but nobody can play drums like Ginger Baker.

as much as I like Ginger`s drumming his style would clutter these songs.
besides even ginger can`t hold a candle to buddy rich.

  19. the king of comedy!

i remember a buddy rich story:
a former member of Buddy Rich’s band heard that he died, and calls his widow.
“is buddy rich there?” is all he says. “no” she replies “buddy rich is dead”. the caller hangs up.
he calls every day - same question same answer he hangs up.
finally after a week she says “ive told you- buddy rich is dead! why do you keep calling?”
“i just like hearing you say it”.
