BECK
Newport 2013 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI; July 28, 2013. Excellent FM broadcast.

Look at the lineup and there is Jason Falkner on bass; and guests include Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Andrew Bird. And Beck’s between-song banter is priceless!

James Reed of The Boston Globe wrote:

The text message from a friend was incredulous: “Never thought I’d be dancing to ‘Loser’ at a folk fest.” Right? But that particular moment was the perfect example of just how far the Newport Folk Festival has come in recent years, reshaping ideas about what folk music is, who plays it, and who listens to it these days.

“Loser” was an alt-rock anthem from the early 1990s by Beck Hansen, who closed out the festival on Sunday night with a memorable performance right in line with Newport’s mission […it’s intended for the musical omnivore, the kind of fan who appreciates something old, something new].

Thanks to larryrulz who recorded the show and sharing it at Dime.

larryrulz’s notes:

This is a fantastic set. A perfect fit to close out the Festival. Dressed all in black, complete with oversize hat, Beck played the folkie perfectly. He was quite respectful of the genre, both in his performances and his interactions with the guest artists. I’m not a big fan, but this performance is just awesome. His banter between songs is worth listening to - both funny and informative. There is some background FM noise which you may find distracting during the quiet moments.

  8. a fine show, thanks bigO. beck has been one of my favorites since “loser”. so many different stylistic influences but still an original artist. plus he has a sense of humor thats sadly lacking with most “modern” bands.

  11. Outstanding! Have been on a major Beck kick recently after buying his last two stand-alone singles, “Defriended” and “I Won’t Be Long” (both highly recommended). Still one of the most original, talented, and eclectic musicians out there. Thank you again for sharing.

  16. RIP Cowboy Jack Clement, country music legend. He was hired by Sam Phillips at Sun Studios in 1956 as a producer and engineer. He recorded the “Million Dollar Quartet” of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. It was his idea to add horns to Jonny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire”, and he wrote several songs recorded by Cash. While at RCA he helped start Charlie Pride’s career. He also produced Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, Louis Armstrong, U2, and many others. His album “All I Want To Do In Life” is a fine one. Here’s a great performance by Jack at a tribute concert:
