Portugal 2013 [no label, 2CD]

Mavis Staples: Live at the Waterfront Blues Festival, Portland, OR; July 7, 2013. Very good to excellent FM broadcast. Janelle Monae: Festival Sudoeste 2013, Herdade da Casa Branca, Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal; August 9, 2013. Excellent FM broadcast.

Here is some sweet soul music from Mavis Staples, thanks to twofthrs for sharing the tracks at Dime. As a bonus, here are three rocking tracks from R&B/soul musician Janelle Monae, thanks to dcr666 who shared them at Dime.

In 2010, fellow Chicagoan and Wilco bandleader Jeff Tweedy produced Mavis Staples’s You Are Not Alone, which won the Grammy for the Best Americana Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011. In June 2013, Mavis again teamed up with Tweedy and released the follow-up One True Vine.

While Cold War and Tightrope are from Janelle Monae’s 2010 The ArchAndroid album, Q.U.E.E.N. is a new track from her forthcoming album, The Electric Lady, scheduled for September 10, 2013. Prince fans might want to check her out.

  3. Track 7 the Instrumental is actually a version “Oh Mary, Don’t you weep” an old gospel song made most famous by Swan Silvertones which in turn was the inspiration for Paul Simon’s Bridge over troubled waters. It can also be found on the latest cd by Rick Holmstron called Cruel Sunrise - Rick is Mavis’s bandleader

  6. Holmstroms style just doesn`t cut it here.
He`s a good player but blues is his forte not r`n`b .
The intro to let`s do it again shows he cannot freely vamp this style.
He lacks the melodious double stops of a Curtis Mayfield type player. Think of Jimi`s playing in little wing or wind cries mary, that is r`n b styling.

  8. OK yeah compare just about anyone to Jimi and they fall short - Ill agree - Ive seen Mavis five times over the last several years with Rick Holmstrom as the band leader. They are tight and support her wonderfully.
