DEREK & THE DOMINOS WITH DUANE ALLMAN
Soul Mates Twin Flames [Mid Valley 309-310, 2CD]

Live at the Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa, FL; December 1, 1970. Good to very good audience recording.

Posted at collectorsmusicreviews.com:

This is the only known live performance of Derek and the Dominos with Duane Allman. The insert claims that he joined the band on at least one other occasion but so far nothing has been documented. There are two known sources available for this show in Tampa. Previous releases include Live at Tampa on Red Light and two versions by Mid Valley as Soul Mates and Soul Mates 2 (each containing different bonus tracks).

Soul Mates 2 is also said to contain the better source tape. This third version from Mid Valley is a two source mix with the main source sounding very good, having a fuller and more defined low end. The secondary source is a step down in quality but is used only to fill in the gaps of the primary source. For some reason, the running order of the songs on Twin Flames is different than the two previous Mid Valley releases, but shares the same order as Live at Tampa.

“Layla” really benefits from two guitars tonight. Duane adds a lot to this version, adding guitar fills to the verses and picking up the signature melody in the choruses, things Clapton was not able to cover alone on guitar.

Duane is also highlighted during “Key to the Highway” with some very nice slide playing. Throughout the show, the interplay between him and Clapton seems very natural, probably because they share a similar blues background. Aside from Duane’s guitar being out of tune for a few of the songs (“Why Does Love”, “Blues Power”, and “Have You Ever Loved”), the show goes off pretty well. This is certainly a unique and intriguing performance by the band, warts and all. - wgpsec

  4. Great. Don´t know which version(s) I have - what a pleasure to compare. Thank you !Duane was… special. Like if he received it wireless from the skies.

  5. can you imagine a pairing like this today?
We`d have soundboards, blu rays, dvds , pay per views..man..and yet this took place only 43 years ago..thank you tapers! This is a perfect instance of the historical value of taping and what we would be missing if no one took the initiative. How did the record biz let this slip by without being there to get a professional account ?

By sluggo on Sep 10, 2013

  6. Sluggo - The “Layla” record was initially a commercial failure (didn’t catch on for a couple of years), so it’s no surprise no one in the record biz bothered to document tour dates. Too bad an obsessive like the Dead’s Bear wasn’t running the PA for D&D - he’s responsible for some of the better early ABB bootlegs from gigs when they opened for the Dead.

I’ve been listening to copies of this show through the sludge for years, so I’m really excited to check out a higher quality version.

  7. most of the d&d shows are well documented but duane only played on 2 shows. while it may say way up top that the other show isnt documented.. i think it means that it hasnt surfaced among collectors. i have heard this other tape. the quality isnt very good. yall arent missing anything. no one would bother listening to it when this one here is available. it just wasnt recorded very well. even i had a hard time listening to it when i heard it and back then i was willing to put up with nearly anything if it meant hearing duane or someone i loved. now? im a lot pickier. i probably wouldnt listen to more than 10 or so mins of it. i dont remember exactly but the tape may have only been 70mins long on a 90min tape. i am positive it exists. i stopped looking for my own copy of it years ago remembering how bad the recording was. the person who had it had a low gen copy. nuff said.

even the double live derek and dominos lp is tough to find these days.I have the lp but have never come across the cd version.
as for the ABB , I do have the cd of the allman brothers -fillmore east recorded by owsley stanley. Only ever came across it once and bought it right there and then.

  9. the opening introduction of the band members is hilarious! “ernest clampton!” does anyone know if this was done as a joke?

By barth on Sep 11, 2013

  10. Part of the legend is that the band name was chosen because Eric was trying to hide from his stardom (since his real name was on the credits on the back cover I’m not sure how that was supposed to work). So maybe this was the band playing along. Or they may all have been very, very high.

By drkrick on Sep 11, 2013

  11. I`m positive I saw a picture in some teen mag years ago that showed Eric wearing a t shirt that read Derek [or someone] and the Kleptomaniacs..I`m sure this was all part of the joke, they wanted some anonymity and yet they new people would soon figure it out. Perhaps they just didn`t want people to think they were going to see a rehash of the cream.

  15. The name Derek & the Dominoes was made up on the spur of the moment when they played their first London gig. At that point the band was sans Duane but plus Dave Mason. For clarification later, the record company made up promo buttons that said, “Derek is Eric!”

There was a 2nd Duane show for sure, I think it was in upstate New York.

By Just Bill on Sep 11, 2013

  16. From Wikipedia. , Allman did perform two shows with the group at Curtis Hixon Hall, in Tampa, Florida, on 1 December 1970, and at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, New York, the following night.[

  17. I was there!our seats were very high up but we could hear great. the 2 lead guitars was the future I said that night, still waiting…didn’t know at first that Clapton’s other guitarist was the mighty duane, we thought wow, ec really took this guy under his wing, it didn’t take long for us to catch on though, someone screamed “unbelievable”, that it was!

  21. To my knowledge, the only other show the Dominos did with Duane was the very next show, 12/1/70 at the Onandaga War Memorial in Syracuse. They did however have other guests jam with them, including Carl Perkins, B.B. King, Delaney Bramlett, Neal Schon, & members of the band Toe Fat, which opened for them on a number of dates, including this one.

By micummings on Sep 11, 2013

  22. i`m sure darth will set us all straight as soon as he is done shopping over at wolfgangs.

    By c 90 on Sep 11, 2013

  23. micummings - they didnt do 2 shows on the same nite. the war memorial is the other show that was recorded with duane yes. thats the one i was referring to above. as i mentioned the sound isnt very good on the recording that was made and thats probably why this one here from tampa is the one that has lasted thru the last 43 years. oddly i have heard many other tapes that also lasted many many years and were horrible quality recordings much much worse than the other d&d tape and nowhere nearly as important to the history of music. considering that perhaps this other recording should have been kept in trading circles and left alive and so on.
however.. it hasnt. im surprised tho given the fact that so few recordings out there exist of duane. that is.. of non allmans material. there are a bunch of shows of him with the brothers of course. collectors of all things duane of course have the dead sets where he joined them. i have this one item on cd that i got in trade many years ago of him and dickey betts in a hotel room jamming for an hour. its one of my fave items. i believe its also from 1970 if memory serves. it is truly rare! there are obviously the 2 videos of him with the allmans - love valley and the fillmore east. both clips are on youtube. their lengths are approx 35 and 25mins if memory serves. im not looking at my copies or at the youtube clips so anyone who finds them can check the lengths.
before that skydog box came out finding all those items that duane appeared on was a task. and there is still a small bunch that is still out there that werent included that collectors might want to find. that box set sure made it a good start for fans tho. i was collecting what i could find of him since the mid 70s tho. more avidly in the early 80s as i learned what existed.

as for that bonus cd in the 20th anniv edition of layla.. it wasnt very expensive when it came out. i got it at the time from tower records and i remember it being relatively inexpensive. it still isnt all there is tho. there is still a 4th cd worth of jams out there that isnt released. i think i have all there is now. bigo has offered quite a few d&d items including the 7cd collection called into the mystic sessions and more. that is a killer item all by itself. another great item is called feast away. its a 6cd set but its not all high quality. be warned.

  24. War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse 12/2/70 2cdr 85min vg sound gig with Derek and Duane confirmed in R. Poe Duane book. Where’s the boards?

By Rich on Sep 18, 2013

  25. they dont exist rich. only an audience recoring and not as good as tampa. read above. most of all that is out there has been made available. after 43 years it isnt likely that anything new will come to light. it could happen but prob not going to. u want boards look at the unreleased portions of the fillmore sets.

  27. I understand Darth. It was a rhetorical question. I have it and the rest, all listed in chrono order on my site. I got my orig tapes of Tampa and Syracuse from a guy in Florida who fell off the map back in the 90’s named Steve Lttwd. Ever trade with him?

  29. rich you know you can`t claim anything to darth. if he doesn`t have something he doesn`t want to think anyone else does. usually if he doesnt have something he`ll just say it doesn`t exist so he hasn`t actually discredited you just yet but he will.

By Rich on Sep 20, 2013

  32. I checked set lists this morning and song order is the same; but the lenghts are different. So it’s a different show and there’s definitely two guitars. I could be wrong; but I believe I have both Tampa 12/1 and Syracuse 12/4. If anyone wants a copy send me an email to my site. I’m not much of a downloader.

    By c 120 on Sep 21, 2013

  44. rich - the date on that syracuse seems to keep changing. i am interested in the syracuse but i dont see any site.

jerk - i never claimed i had it. i said i knew it existed and i had heard it. the one i had heard wasnt as good as the one on this page so i never bothered to attempt to own it. ive never been a completist.

c90 - i dont know what u mean about me being proven wrong. what was i wrong about? how did rich prove me wrong? what exactly are u talking about?
as for how many i have.. its way way more than 34000. i happen to have 34000 on one hard drive and i explained how i got that many and from whom. it had nothing to do with hoarding. it took no effort whatsoever to obtain that collection. what dont u understand about this? how am i hoarding?? its a single collection on one drive. i enjoy my collection. in addition to that drive and all that is on it.. i also have 30+ other drives where i downloaded material on my own. i share what i have and i enjoy it too. what is the point and purpose of having it if not to use it and enjoy it?
i didnt say im not happy. that doesnt mean i dont want more and when something is out there that id like to hear that i wouldnt mind having that i wouldnt put energy or effort into obtaining. there are many many 1000s of items out there i dont have but that doesnt mean i have to have them. but if rich feels that his copy of this recording is vg then i am interested in hearing it. he says his is 2 cds. i have never seen a copy of it that was long enough to go on 2cds. then again when i heard it.. it was on an audio tape and might have not fit on one cd.

why cant u people just use one id instead of multiples to make it appear like u are more than one person? there are certain grammatical errors that some of u make that show that even tho u use different id’s u are the same person.

By darth on Sep 21, 2013

  53. I didn’t realize the D&D Syracuse show was a mystery to some collectors. I listened to it again yesterday, and there is no questions it is from 12/2, and has Duane present. Date is confirmed in Roberty and Poe books. Song lengths are different on Tampa show and Syracuse show; and there’s other clues to differentiate the two shows, like fireworks during GTGBIALWhile on the Syracuse tape that is not on the Tampa tape. Happy to share a copy and set lists if anyone still trades in this world.

c90 - i wasnt wrong on its availability. it isnt easy to find. that rich says he has it doesnt make it any more available. do u have a copy? do u know anyone other than rich who has a copy? have u ever seen one or heard it? do u know anyone who has? ahem.. i rest my case.

  70. one neednt check 34000 titles. u can go to the site click on D and then scroll down to the area where the derek items would be. its clear which ones are there and which ones arent. if u cant tell based on the info in the file name line u can always click on the info link on the extreme left. thats where u find the setlists and other pertinent info. the next link to the right is how u dl the file and the title link will play the file. thats the asx file i believe.

as for ppl who think i use other names on here.. i already said i dont do that.
i dont get set off by being accused of being wrong. u need more than that. and cmon.. seriously? u think that a few idiots on here can really affect me that much? get over yourself.
    and lastly…
no u dont have a copy. u dont know anyone who has a copy. u have never seen a copy or heard this recording. and claiming u do doesnt mean much. evidently i wont be getting a copy either. i dont think i was going to get one. i had hoped i would but it seems someone else is going to have to get this if they want it. im in no rush. its 43 yrs old. ive heard it. the one we have here is better. and with the 10-12 cds worth of d&d material that i have in addition to this.. im good. sure id like it or i wouldnt have asked for it. but i wont die w/o it. eventually it will show up. there are enough other things i have to enjoy. and im always dl’ing more every day.

  74. i do believe someone posted that what i should have said was that it was the first 3inch mini cd single or something to that affect. which it was.
i dont see how your post above is proving me wrong btw. your attempt was to show how i am set off by being accused of being wrong. i am in no way being set off. i wasnt proven to be wrong. u didnt have better info and i didnt have to go racing around the net to find information the way u did in an effort to try to disprove something u said. u are trying to make a point here by quoting the line where i said i dont get set off etc. but u arent proving your case. i dont think the fact that i respond is setting me off any more than my comments on here are setting u off. are u admitting that i have this power over u? am i setting u off? it sure seems i can control what u do simply by making a comment on this site. u are like a fucking puppet here. u claim u wont continue to do exactly what u are doing yet it doesnt seem to be stopping. why say this in the first place?
i respond to most posts even ones where people think they proved me wrong. just because u or others think i was proven wrong doesnt mean i was. and just because u say things like ‘he wont respond’ in an effort to force me to respond doesnt mean i will. i choose if and when i will respond to posts. u can try to do all the poking u wish but if i chose not to even when u say things like ‘when hes proven wrong’ it will be my choice. it doesnt imply that i agree that u proved me wrong if i dont reply. i have let many a ridiculous comment go without responding. not because i was proven wrong of course but because i saw no point in continuing since u dont read or comprehend too well and when u do it doesnt matter. u will see or read what u wish to.
just like they say to people when it comes to believing in god - for those who believe no proof is necessary. for those who dont none will suffice. the same applies with u and those other idiots who follow u. u will see and accept and believe what u wish. nothing i say here will change what u have already set your mind to believe.

as for not using other names on this site.. sure i wouldnt ever compromise those things. i have too much self respect to do that. perhaps u should consider that each time u use a different id when u post on here.

  76. i pray that claptons people have found a way to make this impossible to upload or download so that trolls like you darth can`t steal it

    By 7 on Sep 28, 2013

  77. I felt that “461″ was one of eric`s best releases over the last few decades and then “there`s one in every crowd” was just a lame effort.
There are some interesting things here on this new set but with two of the discs here from “every crowd” that alone will deter some fans from buying this.
Also, 461 has already had the deluxe version treatment [minus a few of these bonus tracks] another record company stale idea to make some bucks. a quad version of one in every crowd, holy shit as if the original wasn`t bad enough who would want to hear this poor recording in quad..again, these record guys have no idea about marketing anymore. Can`t believe eric was involved in this or needs the money that badly.

By sluggo on Sep 28, 2013

  78. u could be right, sluggo, eric may not have been involved. i remember an elvis costello deluxe box set that was released not too long ago- 4 or 5 discs, a booklet, a few tchotchkes, etc. the price was around $200 or so. elvis had no input on it and spoke out against it on his web site, telling his fans it was obscenely overpriced. thankuverymuch, elvis.

By barth on Sep 28, 2013

  79. elvis did that ? another pro with morals!
Hasn`t he got something new out right now where he has done completely different arrangements of his older catalog?
thought I read something like that.
Don`t know if you saw his TV show where he had different musicians appear and he would let them play , then join them and interview them a bit, it was a great show and I wish he had done more of them.

By sluggo on Sep 28, 2013

  80. “i am in no way being set off.”
Wrong again, darth. The dictionary definition of “set off” is: “cause (someone or something) to start doing something”. I caused you to issue a blathering, irrational response to my comments.

“i wasnt proven to be wrong.”
Wrong again, darth. I provided information from several reputable web sites, also the man who replied to you on YouTube after you pleaded for help there. “can u offer help? please? please hurry.”

“i have too much self respect”
Wrong again, darth. You have too much psychosis. Have a nice weekend.

By Dingus on Sep 28, 2013

  81. kudos to e c! his point was that it was totally unnecessary. if i remember correctly, he said almost everything on it had already been released, and the price was outrageous.

elvis has a new album “wise up ghost” with The Roots backing him. it took a few listens, but i like most of the songs. i prefer low voice elvis to screaming elvis. a concert they did at brooklyn bowl can be downloaded if you scroll down to the second comment under the photos here:
    http://tinyurl.com/nykvua5
they play a mix of new songs and elvis hits.

    darth: Nothing..no comment

By bonafide jerk on Sep 28, 2013

  83. It’s surprising that he didn’t insult the guy. If you go to the Zappa video where he pleads for help, the guy who posted the video tells darth that he’s wrong about Peaches en Regalia being the first cd single ever in 1983. You’ll notice above, if you choose to read his rambling prattle, he tries to weasel out of his gaff.

  85. hi sluggo, and anyone else who enjoys memphis music and good rock n roll- john paul keith has a very strong new lp “memphis 3am”. hes kinda like marshall crenshaw with fewer pop influences and more countryish. its produced by the great roland janes and recorded at the legendary sam phillips recording service… on 2 inch tape! great tunes, several hit singles in a better world. full disclosure- i have no financial connection to mr. jpk.

  92. rave on young foolish twit, lol

not my post here either. seems some chicken shit is getting her jollies by pretending to be a bunch of different posters here.

By sluggo on Sep 29, 2013

  93. note.. if the info can be accepted for a moment to be accurate that d&d played 2 nites in portchester.. the 4th and 5th.. and 2 shows on the 5th.. early and late.. as one of the boots would suggest.. it would seem likely that if duane appeared in syracuse on 12-2 (after appearing in tampa fla on 12-1 and obviously flying up to syracuse immediately afterwards with the band) that he would also attend the shows on the 4th 5th and 6th. the 6th is their final ever performance. the 4th as i mention is in portchester and is listed on sugarmegs as being with duane. u can distinctly hear 2 guitars. this is either mislabled and its syracuse or its another performance with duane above the 12-1 and 12-2 shows we know of.
my point being however.. is if he is going to go to the trouble to play a show upstate with them and possibly 2 shows.. why isnt he listed on the 5th for either the early or late show? and the 6th (their final ever show)?
all these performances are upstate ny. the quality of the final show is too terrible to pick out a 2nd guitarist for me. ill leave that to yall. i have had that recording for many years but i hate to listen to it for obvious reasons. the show on the 5th will fit on 2 cds btw. the late show on one cd. layla isnt even on that boot at all.
i just thought that yall might wanna notice and take into consideration that not everything u read or see listed on a boot is always accurate. sugarmegs doesnt do a hell of a lot of research on the items he gets and posts. he just posts what he gets and lets it go. hes slightly anal but not as anal as one might wish.
i do suppose it is possible that duane did one day in portchester and one day in syracuse and said thats it. but why? why not the 2nd day in portchester and the final show in selden at suffolk univ. they were only the next day and the day after that. why do 3 ny state shows and not 5?
imagine what he might have done had he not died at age 24. sigh.

  95. the comment above is not mine.

the only way to know if the portchester show is mislabeled and is actually the syracuse show is to listen to them both simultaneously as i did when i recently solved the mystery of the cream “crossroads” videos on youtube. i do not have both shows.

“not everything u read or see listed on a boot is always accurate.”
some people only use their failing memory and dont bother to do any research. tsk tsk.

  97. Hey Darth, interesting theory about Duane playing with the Dominos at Port Chester on Dec 4 & 5, but I checked with the Allman Bros official website and it shows that on Dec 4 & 5 the Allmans were playing in South and North Carolina, so Duane couldn’t have been with the Dominos on those dates.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  98. darth’s wrong again. Yawn. If he were smart, he’d follow my advice.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 25, 2013

  99. not so fast JW…

from the book Skydog ,The duane Allman Story it says ,… ” On August 28,the Allman Brothers were scheduled to play the first of a string of shows in Pensacola, so Duane had to move on. But before he could get out the door,Eric asked him to come back and play on the remaining sessions. Duane said he`d be back as soon as the stretch in Pensacola was over.
In his absence, [Duanes] the quartet [derek and dominos] cut,I Looked Away,Bell Bottom Blues, and Keep On Growing. Upon Duanes return, the five musicians recorded the rest of the album. The Allman Brothers had shows coming up in Milwaukee and Chicago, but Clapton`s record wasn`t finished yet. For the first and only time, Duane Allman voluntarily missed not one but four ABB concerts, opting to stay and play with Derek and the Dominos.”
…it goes on to say a few pages later..
After a gig on November 22 in San Diego,Clapton`s group turned around and headed for the East Coast ,playing again in chicago,Cincinnati,St.Louis,Cleveland, and Owing Mills ,Maryland. Finally having a short break from the Allman Brothers constant road schedule,Duane caught up with the band at Curtis Nixon Hall in Tampa Florida ,on December 1 and then played with them again the next night in Syracuse New York. Those two shows would turn out to be the only times Allman would have a chance to perform live with Derek and the Dominos . “

By sluggo on Oct 25, 2013

  100. Sluggo, you are agreeing with me. I agree Duane played on Dec 1 at Tampa and Dec 2 at Syracuse; everything I have ever read agrees with that. I was merely saying I doubt he stayed in New York after the Syracuse Dec 2 show and played in Port Chester on Dec 5. I have the Port Chester shows and only hear one guitar in them, and the Allmans’ own website lists them as playing in South Carolina on the 4th and North Carolina on the 5th so that evidences against Duane playing in Port Chester on the 4th. What you quoted from the Skydog book only talks about him playing in Syracuse on the 2nd. If it says elsewhere that he stayed in NY to play in Port Chester on the 4th, let me know. I just listened to the Port Chester shows again and only hear one guitar. The quote about Duane missing Allman Bros shows refers to his missing some shows in September to finish the record down in Miami, not to play with the Dominos in concert in New York in December. In fact, that quote confirms that he never missed any other shows which would include the December 5 show in North Carolina.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  101. see what you mean..got my wires crossed there and i don`t see anything about him sticking around for the 4th..

By sluggo on Oct 25, 2013

  102. It’s just a shame that the recordings of the Tampa show are so poor and that Duane’s guitar sounds so screechy at times and out of tune at others. The fact that the studio recording of Key To The Highway was nothing more than a live in-studio jam tells you what a good concert recording of the two of them together could have been . . . .

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  103. not sure why the recording u have is so poor when relatively decent ones are available. in fact i heard a rumor that there was one on this page right here.

if u check out the 4th (and u can dl that from sugarmeg as i mentioned) u will hear 2 guitars. its pretty clear that its duane too.

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  104. Anybody want to fact check the idiot, or do we just take it for granted that he’s wrong?

By Everyone Else On bigO on Oct 25, 2013

  105. Take it for granted that he’s wrong.
    *Sigh*
I try to help the guy, but he just doesn’t listen. It’s sad.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 25, 2013

  106. u could check it. it says its with duane. u can hear 2 guitars. it says its the 4th. it says its in portchester. what other facts would u like to check? ive already posted this information way up above. while youre busy calling me an idiot.. youre proving that u are one.

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  107. dont try to ‘help’ someone who doesnt want your ‘help’. u claiming im wrong doesnt make me wrong. thats even more sad.

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  108. I only have the two Port Chester shows for the fifth, not the 4th. I will have to check that out. Can’t comment on that other than what I’ve already said about the ABB website showing the Brothers were in SC on the 4th and NC on the 5th, but obviously that could be incorrect.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  109. Try being a man, darth. Admit you’re wrong, apologize for all the rudeness and name calling and move on.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 25, 2013

  110. eric reworked layla again: http://tinyurl.com/jwykaoq :-)

By barth on Oct 25, 2013

  111. Maybe I know where the confusion comes from. Now I recall that a year or two ago I came across a disc claiming to be Port Chester December 4 with Duane and I bought it but it turned out to be just a reworking of the December 1 Tampa show, same as a bogus December 2 Syracuse disc I came across that was also just the Tampa Dec 1 show rearranged. Maybe what you have is a rearranged Tampa show recording.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  112. Unfortunately just because the label says a particular date or venue, that doesn’t mean it is (like the wrong date on the Allmans’ A&R radio show from 1971). Lots of boots have incorrect labels, and as is clear from the known fake Syracuse disc that is just the Tampa show rearranged (see the Geetarz entry for Dec 2 Syracuse), there are also what are probably intentional fakes out there. The only thing to do is to listen to the individual songs side by side. My guess, Darth, is that if there really are two guitars in your Dec 4 Port Chester recording, then if you listen to it side by side with the Tampa show they will be the same. If not, I want a copy!

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  113. I’m holding in my hands a disc entitled “Complete Capitol Theatre Portchester, New York 1970, Derek and the Dominos with Duane Allman” on the front. The back cover says “Derek and the Dominos with Duane Allman 4 DEC 1970 Capitol Theatre, Portchester, New York.” On the discs it says “Crimson Records 3880/81″ along with the title, which reminds me that I bought it along with a few others from Crimson Records website. But the tracks are beyond a doubt just the Tampa show rearranged. This might be the source of what you have, Darth.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  114. darth will claim his is something different but will provide nothing to fact check with.

By blunt on Oct 25, 2013

  115. I checked out the sugarmegs entry for the purported Dec 4 Portchester show with Duane. The description of the source is identical (word for word, same abbreviations and same capitalization of DEC) to the fake disc I have and the song list is the same 8 songs in the same order as on my disc. I haven’t listened to any of the songs yet but I would be very surprised if they are NOT the Tampa recordings.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  116. most of the stuff sugarmeg gets is just recordings that people put onto the net somewhere and he dl’s or he is sent and redoes so it fits into a small wma file (or mp3 more recently) in a single file for ppl to dl. all i did was point it out to ppl here and the info that was posted therein. i did mention that he isnt that anal about checking all info as tightly as he could but he does do a small bit of work to keep things neat clean and tidy. with 60-70k recordings and for as many years as hes been at it.. hes done a hell of a job. its essentially a one man operation. i dont say he makes no mistakes but he takes what he gets and what info he is given and puts it up as is. if the info is wrong its as wrong as it was when he got it. i have never seen him correct or take something down when told it was wrong. thats my experience. about 5 or so years ago i got an entire terabyte drive full of everything he had at that time. it was approx 30-34k worth of items from him. i would say he has dbled that now. so everything he had up til say labor day 2008 i own on one hard drive. if only i could get him to do that again. sigh.
its ok.. im fine with what i have. i attempted to get the other show but some ppl hoard things and sometimes trades dont work out. perhaps it will make it to the web again and we’ll all have it again. who knows?

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  117. “i have never seen him correct or take something down when told it was wrong.”

Sounds familiar. Does he launch into rambling tirades and bullshit rationalizations like someone else we know when he’s proven to be wrong?

By Dingus on Oct 25, 2013

  118. there isnt a comment section where idiots like u can harass others. so to answer your ridiculously stupid fucking question.. um.. no.

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  119. Jeez, all I’m trying to do is to explore the possibility of whether or not there really are other existing recordings with Duane playing with the Dominos besides the Tampa show, trying to fairly look at the written statements and various dubious mislabeled recordings circulating. If I offended anybody, sorry, not trying to, just trying to debate the vague bits of evidence. No need for everyone to attack each other. Man, music is supposed to be shared and enjoyed by all, not be the source of so much anger!

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  120. JW I appreciate your efforts to get the facts straight on these shows. There’s a lot of bad information out there in the bootleg world, very few people do the research.

  122. I guess I just don’t understand some people. I also collect early 20th century baseball cards, the old dead-ball era tobacco and caramel cards, another area in which there are a hell of a lot of mysteries and unanswered questions. Half of the fun is trading ideas with other collectors, throwing theories out there and seeing what other collectors can come up with for or against it, just for the fun of the debate. Yet, there too, there are always a few who have to make it personal, get into insults and name-calling. Darth posted a very interesting theory that Duane might have stuck around in NY and traveled from Syracuse to Portchester to continue playing with the Dominos, and he backed it up with the sugarmeg posting of a supposed December 4 Portchester recording with Duane which has two guitars. I thought it was an interesting theory and did some research and turned up the conficting tour dates for the Allmans in the Carolinas, and the fact that I had a similar supposed Dec 4 Portchester show with Duane that was definitely a fake and might be the source of the sugarmeg file. Just an interesting exchange of ideas and evidence. I just don’t get why some people have to take that to personal levels with name calling and insults.

  123. stick around JW and read a few of darths bitter , hate filled ,obscenity laced rants, and you`ll start to get a clearer picture of why he is the most despised liar ever to visit bigo

    and thats being kind.

By blunt on Oct 25, 2013

  124. JW, everybody who’s attacking darth has been the victim of unprovoked attacks by him. He’s earned every bit of criticism he gets. I’ve tried my best to help him, but it just gets me more abuse from him.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 25, 2013

  125. Hey Dominos fans - maybe someone has some info for me. I have a 4-song boot labeled Isle of Wight August 28 that is hilighted by a great 10-minute Bad Boy (best version I’ve heard) which they only seem to have played on the English club summer tour. I can’t find any reference to this performance anywhere or any reference to them being at the Isle of Wight. It is definitely not the August 11, 14 or 18 shows or the October 11 show, all of which I have. Can anyone identify it? The songs in order are Roll it Over, Blues Power, Have You Ever Loved a Woman and Bad Boy.

By JW on Oct 25, 2013

  126. JW obviously you know Derek and the dominos did not play Isle of Wight august 28th 1970,or ever , you can look up the acts that did.
I`m sure you have played this oddity you have against the others that contain the same songs for comparison sake. Perhaps they did a tv broadcast while they were in England or a small club date. Can you hear any audience , or does it sound like a small room, large room, hall?
Hard to judge without actually hearing it.

By sluggo on Oct 26, 2013

  127. I will listen to it again (no great hardship there!) to see what the crowd sounds like. I know at least “Bad Boy” is not from the shows I listed above; I will try to cross check the other tracks. Although it is a short 4-song snippet with fair sound at best, the performance is one of their best. Very aggressive playing. I am happy to share it with anyone who wants it.

By JW on Oct 26, 2013

  128. JW- the insults are unfortunately always flying on unmoderated internet forums. The main reason that things get so bad here with darth, especially in the last two weeks, is that he insists that he’s right and continues to argue even after he’s been proven wrong by information and links from several credible websites. A perfect example is when he recently said Steve Howe of Yes played guitar on a live Chuck Berry album recorded in 1967 with the Steve Miller Band. Two people have the album and Steve Howe is not listed as being in the band. Allmusic.com, wikipedia, and Steve Howe’s official web site say nothing about this. darth still insists that he’s right, because two Deadheads told him this 25 years ago.

You can’t walk away from discussions/arguments where he’s been proven wrong because he’ll regurgitate them on a different thread several days later. This only leads to more insults.

He’s a sociopath, a rageaholic, and a blatant liar. darth is his own worst enemy. Get ready for his 1000 word frothing rant of a reply. I’m sure he’ll deny most of what I’ve said.

By Dingus on Oct 26, 2013

  129. JW-understand that most of the insults directed at darth are by people with much too much time on their hands and laziness when it comes to actually verifying what darth has to say.

unfortunately we have to winnow our way past their anger and jealousy w regard to darth.

most people here agree with this.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 26, 2013

  130. no, they don’t. they also know you’re a fake. but darth will probably thank you.

verify: make sure or demonstrate that (something) is true, accurate, or justified.

It’s impossible to verify most of darth’s claims, they’re wrong, or lies, or bs.

By lowend darthlick on Oct 26, 2013

  131. uh….yeah they do.and they know you’re a fake as well.

just because you can’t verify possibly because of sheer laziness as I said doesn’t mean it isn’t true…get a grip and get a clue….

    thanks for stopping by

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 26, 2013

oh, and good luck to you in the future when, maybe with practice and a little luck, someone might just take you seriously, lol

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 26, 2013

  138. still trying to verify that spacebar? good luck with that. you lost the battle with your first remark: “too much time on their hands and laziness when it comes to actually verifying what darth has to say.”

pay attention now: darth is the one who has to verify what he says, not us. understand? do you know what verify means? you don’t, do you? you’re as dense as your hero. asswipe. you won by losing? that sounds like darth logic.

By lowend darthlick on Oct 26, 2013

  139. still trying to make a point anyone here would be interested in,buddy?

now I’ll explain it here again at the risk of boring everyone else.Verify means you have to prove or otherwise back up anything you lowend say.You know what logic means, don’t you?I suggest looking that up oh and by the way look up verify while you have the dictionary book open-I’ll give you a hint (it’s under ‘v’)

only one here dense is you.Get a grip on things and let the adults talk while you play in the other room. You lost once again, lol

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 26, 2013

  140. HOW THE HELL DO YA VERIFY A SPACEBAR?

By bootlick sarge on Oct 26, 2013

  141. verify: make sure or demonstrate that (something) is true, accurate, or justified.

that’s what darth has to do after other people have verified that he’s wrong by providing evidence that he’s wrong. got it now? i can tell you’re desperate because you didn’t hit the spacebar once. LMFAO! this is too easy, i’m done here. it’s like shooting fish in a barrel with an m16. maybe i’ll do you a favour and ignore you next time. as swipe.

By lowend darthlick on Oct 26, 2013

  142. sarge, you have to use the damn thing. asswipe here hasn’t acquired that skill.

By lowend darthlick on Oct 26, 2013

  143. Nope….sorry.You lost once again. Not desperate just trying to help by pointing out your mistakes. You’ve done nothing but reject darth’s info but refuting and offering nothing to the contrary that he’s right. You have to prove he’s wrong.Get it? I didn’t think so. LMFAO! what’s easy is making you look as stupid as you are which you don’t seem to need to much help there.Oh and you should never have any access to anything like an M16.Maybe everyone here will do you a favor and ignore you.By that we hope you will learn and grow up in the meantime, lol

  146. jw - theres a 6 cd set called feast away. the first cd is from aug 18th 1970. the first 4 songs are the same as the 4 songs u list. the location is The Pavilion, Bournemouth. there are however 5 more songs to this cd. while the set changed here and there during their slightly over 4 months touring together the set list in that order would be the same during that section of the tour. so a show from those weeks would be similar. if they did show up at the isle of wight or a venue around that date give or take a day or two here or there the set list of those 4 songs makes sense. i have the above mentioned 6 cd set. i have i as flac files so i cant tell u how large the files are unless u happened to have the same files on your computer etc.
if u found a particular sound or something to tell me to listen for during one song or something i could see if i hear it during my collection of those 4 songs and we could determine if its the same set / location / date etc.

incidentally.. i never said anything about steve howe playing with chuck berry in 67. not one word. i also never ever attacked anyone on this site or any other unprovoked. without exception. i dont attack people. theres no reason for me to do that. i post comments. there are ppl here who dont like some of my postings and they attack me. i defend myself and they feel that what i say is attacking them. they think that its perfectly acceptable to harass instigate provoke and otherwise fuck with me without any response from me in a likewise manner. if i do happen to respond in a similar way then somehow i am attacking them unprovoked and im wrong. its incredible. all anyone would have to do is actually look at the postings themselves. scroll to the top of any page where i have posted and any postings have been made towards me. read carefully what is said to me and what i have said back. i dont talk to these people til they address me. there are no exceptions to this. i have been here on this site since the middle of 2004 or just after that. perhaps late summer. i have formed some very nice friendships here and some of them have crossed over into email away from this site. i wouldnt trade those friends for anything. some i dont hear from nearly as often as i wish i did.

this site is a godsend. the moderator knows how i feel about him and it and what he does. there are some very insightful people here who appreciate my input to this site and what i have to offer here. for the others.. it is often said.. those who matter dont mind and those who mind dont matter. im here for the music and knowledge. along the way if i can share with others.. i do it. if there are people who dont appreciate what i have to offer the hell with them. i have a very long history with regards to the world of music. no one especially the idiots on here can take that away from me. no matter how hard they try. ive been told to ignore them. i do try as often as i can. sometimes its harder than u think.

  148. The “Isle of Wight” recording I have is definitely not the August 18 Bournemouth recording. I have that one and it is completely different. Same songs yes, but played differently. I also have the August 11 Marquee club recording, the August 14 Malvern recording and the October 11 Lyceum recording, and it’s not any of those either. There is definitely audience noise but it is hard to tell if it is a small club or larger venue.

he`s right you know , he said 1968 and wrote paragraphs about steve howe playing with chuck berry which was still bullshit. its in the depeche mode posts.

By sluggo on Oct 26, 2013

  151. You’re right sluggo, I mistakenly typed 1967 instead of 1968. Everything else I said was accurate.

JW, when darth says he’s being attacked or harassed, sometimes that’s just someone correcting his mistakes or lies. Then the arguments start.

    Go to this thread: http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=1609
and scroll down to just the 12th comment where darth says “i recently learned from some schmuck on here that billy joel was my fave singer so i figured id share this with yall -” and you’ll see an example of what I said above about how darth regurgitates arguments on a different thread. You’ll also see that NONE of his alleged “harassers” made a comment before he did.

You’ll see very clearly that darth LIED above when he said “i also never ever attacked anyone on this site or any other unprovoked. without exception. i dont attack people.” and “i dont talk to these people til they address me. there are no exceptions to this.”

Hey darth, I would love to hear this if you’re willing to share.

By Stark on Oct 30, 2013

  161. i dont know any way to do that. sorry stark. ive learned not to risk trusting ppl on here anymore. i even risked trying to give one more person a chance on here a few weeks ago and learned i couldnt even arrange a trade with him. im not usually one to hoard things and keep them to myself but i think this is one of those items that i will keep rare.

i looked on sugarmeg to see if it may have been there for me to link u to but the only thing from that era was a dave herman radio interview. incidentally dave was recently arrested on child molestation charges. i hope to god these charges are false because he was one of the greatest radio djs/hosts in my years growing up in nyc. the man is a radio god. did u get that skydog box btw? killer collection. back in the late 80s i knew a guy who was a massive allmans collector and he had more allmans recordings from the duane era than anyone i had ever seen. from what i recall him saying he was only missing about 20 or so shows that were known to have been recorded. he said there were many other shows but they hadnt been recorded by anyone.
what id like to find are more studio jam sessions or house jams. those are the sorts of things i enjoy. from 68 to 71 there seems to have been a slew of these and i cant get enough of em. i had about 8-10 of em on audio tape in early 02 and id like to replace those if i could. and im still looking for the d&d show that has been discussed above that hasnt shown up anywhere yet.

  168. So does anyone have the Syracuse show from the 2nd December 1970? I’d love to hear it if it all possible. Thanks.

By Tom on Apr 30, 2014

  169. Tom, as far as I can tell there is no legit recording of the Syracuse show. I have acquired a few different purported recordings of it, but they are all just faudulent rearranged recordings of the Tampa show. Identical note for note. I’ve been looking for it for a few years and as far as I can tell it doesn’t exist. But I highly recommend the November 29 Painters Mill, Owings Maryland show from just before the two Duane shows, if you don’t have it. Opens with what I think is the best version of Layla out there, which segues into Bell Bottom Blues, both of which are only known from one or two other shows. Sound quality isn’t the best but the performance makes up for it. Personally I think it is better than the Tampa show with Duane.

By JW on May 7, 2014

  170. November 29 Painters Mill, Owings Maryland

getting it right now, didn`t know about this one thanks a million JW!

By dropkick sarge on May 7, 2014

  171. Hey Sarge, after you give it a listen, let me know what you think of it. I’ve got every known Dominos show, and although the sound quality on the Owings Mill recording isn’t the best, to me the opening two song combo of Layla leading into Bell Bottom Blues is my favorite Derek listen, along with Crossroads from the Port Chester late show, Crossroads from the Fillmore 10/23 show, Bad Boy from the new unknown venue/”Isle of Wight” tape, and Why Does Love…. from the Philadelphia show and Why Does Love…. from the Fillmore 10/24 show (shorter than the 10/23 version, but more melodic and better).

By JW on May 8, 2014

  172. JW - I have that show, love it. I have 22 Dominos shows although I believe they played around 60 shows in total. From what I’ve read I think I have all the available bootlegs of them. Without a doubt my favourite band. A shame no more exist although no doubt there are recordings out there, probably forgotten about in a box in someones attic or basement. A sad thought.

By Tom on May 23, 2014

  173. I was at the December 5, 1970 show at The Capitol Theater in Portchester, NY. It was Eric and Duane and it was truly awesome. Please stop bashing one another.

By Aquamarlin on Sep 21, 2014

  174. I recently found the recording of the Nov 29 Owings Mills concert. Not the best quality but I agree that the one-two punch of Layla/Bell Bottom Blues is awesome. I was at that show and it was a small theater in the round (Painters Mill Music Fair) just west of Baltimore. Thinking back it’s hard to imagine that I got to see Clapton in such a small venue, just wish I would have seen Duane with them.

  176. Duane Allman played with Derek and the Dominoes at the Syracuse War Memorial, Syracuse, NY on December 2, 1970. The show had been scheduled for November but had been snowed out. This was the make up date. Elton John was one of the two opening acts performing his set as it appears on his live album “11/17/70.” Of this I am certain. I was there and still have my ticket stub. Needless to say, a great show.
