Santa Cruz 1977 Compilation 2 [no label, 2CD]

Various venues? Santa Cruz, California; July/August? 1977. Very good soundboard (previously uncirculated).

The Ducks were a short-lived band of Neil Young, Bob Mosley, Jeff Blackburn and Johnny C (Craviotto) in the ’70s.

Compilation 1 is shared here.

Thanks to grner1 for sharing the tracks at Dime; and to ethiessen1 for the artwork.

grner1 noted:

This just came my way from a friend who I recently met here in Santa Cruz. It came from outside of the “tape collecting world” from cassettes squirreled away many years ago and were just transferred to share for the first time. The other three members besides Neil Young were associated with Moby Grape and this band only did perhaps 20 shows or so at most, and all in the Santa Cruz area. No soundboard recordings of live shows have circulated til now and nothing has ever been released in any form by this band. I transferred two 9- minute compilations of live tracks that were not well labeled but they are from more than one night with the likely venues being The Catalyst and The Crossroads. (This torrent is from two 46-minute cassettes and was labeled as being from July, 1977 but some of it actually may be from August, 1977.)

Probable lineage:
Multi-track masters > Dolby B encoded Maxell UDXLII cassette (unknown recording decks).
Transfer [2013-08-27]: Nakamichi Dragon (Dolby B decoded) > Macintosh with Digidesign Audiomedia III sound card > Pro Tools (minor “nip and tuck” edits, normalization & tracking - no EQ or additional noise reduction) > AIFF > xACT (Flac level 8 files with sector boundaries verified).

Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (224 kbps). As far as we can ascertain, these tracks have never been officially released on CD.

  3. Nice!!! Thanks to you BigO guys, I’ve bought the first 4 Neil Young albums. I was NOT a Neil Young fan before hearing all this great live material…

  4. DanC, if you haven’t already, don’t forget to pick up the two CSN&Y sets from BigO. Cimmamon Girl instrumental is very good (so is Marrakesh Express, with the hot lead guitar, btw). It seems that every now and then Neil would join up with a band that would just infuse his fire for hot guitar again, like on the Mirrorball album. But sadly, don’t like much of his more recent stuff.

  7. Very cool!! I’m a big Neil fan from way back, but never heard of the Ducks. Looking forward to hearing this. I saw Neil and CH last Fall in Brooklyn and they blew the roof off the Barclay Center!

  10. has a video section that includes many live rock concerts recorded at the Catalyst, Crossroads and other local venues in the general Santa Cruz - bay area. Each concert is of one band, lasts an hour, and was broadcast on GrooveTV. These concerts go back 12-13 years. They seem to be well produced and sound good. The link I show is of one performance at The Catalyst, about 25 years after Neil Young and the Ducks played there. Thought you might like to see the setting and get a feeling for how small a venue it was. I only saw a few of the videos (in the 2001-04 era) and they were instrumental rock with good size bands with a good sound going. Explore to see if you find any bands you’ve heard of. Even if not, the bands I saw were good. Oh, you can also download the video in MPEG1 for CD videos. It’s all public domain, free.

  12. Actually, My tapes were given to a friend for just a single copy. I clearly told him they were very private. Since he is a sincere music lover , I thought the cassettes would be safe.. They weren’t, he bootlegged them to my disappointment. His explanation was, I feel a need to share then with the world… Of course he has made thousands of dollars from my tapes… The great news is , Ive got the masters and the original transfers….

    Aloha form Jonnie
