Marian McPartland, host of Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on National Public Radio from 1978 until 2011, died of natural causes at her home in Port Washington, New York on August 20, 2013. She was 95. In 1978, she hosted the nationally-syndicated Piano Jazz, described as “a relaxed, one-on-one hour of music and conversation”. Over the next 33 years, she interviewed more than 500 artists from Mel Torme to Elvis Costello. But the focus, as the title suggested, was on jazz pianists - with whom she would often duet live on air. “I didn’t have any idea I’d be good at something like this,” McPartland told The Associated Press in 2000. “I certainly never thought people would know me because of my voice.” But she proved a natural. Piano Jazz was heard on more than 200 radio stations all over the world. It received a Peabody Award (broadcasting) in 1983.

Piano Jazz 2004 [no label, 1CD]

Live in New York; November 4, 2004. Excellent radio broadcast.

Here is a 2004 programme with Marian McPartland having a nice chat and duetting with Burt Bacharach, and each revealing a bit more aboutthemselves. McPartland had that ability to effortlessly draw out her guests.

Thanks to the person to who shared this show at Dime:
“RIP Marian. Thanks for the music and your Piano Jazz show.”

  5. Thanks for this post and tribute, BigO. Really great artist who will be missed. “Piano Jazz” was a show I never missed. Great interviews and unique performances like the one featured here. Several were issued on CD. The show/CD with Steely Dan is one I play often. Fans should definitely search it out.
