NEIL YOUNG
Farm Aid 2013 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga, New York; September 21, 2013. Excellent webcast.

With the exception of quick run-throughs of “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold,” Neil Young’s entire set was devoted to songs by Young’s favorite songwriters. He had never played any of the songs publicly besides “Blowin’ In The Wind.” Virtually nobody recognized Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Since I Met You Baby” or “Changes” by Phil Ochs.” Thanks to the famous cover by Rod Stewart, most everyone knew Tim Hardin’s “Reason To Believe.” Young played an absolutely stellar version of the tune on the organ, though he nearly abandoned the effort after the first few lines.

Clearly a little flustered by the song, he stood up after the initial attempt and returned to his ongoing rant about biofuels and fracking. “Colorado could be heading down the highway towards Albany,” he said. “If you don’t believe me, you’re living in denial.” He then returned to the organ and finished the song.

Before ending the set with Phil Ochs’ “Changes,” Young said that he spoke backstage with Pete Seeger about the troubled 1960s protest singer. Seeger regrets not doing more to help Ochcs before he committed suicide in 1976, and Young argued that there was little he could have done, comparing it to his efforts to contact Kurt Cobain in his last days. “Phil Ochs was one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived,” said Young. “He wrote this next song, which some of you have probably never heard.” Young almost always plays “Homegrown” at Farm Aid, but this year he had other things on his mind. - Andy Greene (rollingstone.com)

  4. Thanks, Big O! The more Neil the merrier! Just wish the circumstances were better. American farmers (and this is probably true world-wide) have really taken a beating in the past decades at the hands of the Farming Conglomerations. A real pity…

  5. i went to so much effort to record it from the youtube stream. the neil cam out perfect both times i did it. 41mins long. u can also hear him on the 2nd pete seeger track. pete’s set is 11mins and his 2nd song is this land is your land. the other 3 kinda just stood there altho mellencamp chimes in a little.. neil is the one u hear most other than seeger. dave and willie are totally inaudible because they do not go anywhere near the mic’s and do not sing. they stand there. lol.
neil is also on the final sort of encore willie did but mostly on harmonica only.

for fans of jakob nelson he did at least one song that i saw but that was clearly part of a longer set and he did 12 mins as part of the jack johnson set. the 2nd and 3rd to last songs of his set. they added up to 12mins and the 2nd one was whole lotta love.
when jakob shreds on the willie tracks during his set which was 57mins he really does a killer job.

mellencamps set was 50mins. dave matthews with tim reynolds was 48mins. tim killed during that set.
it would be nice to get all the older farm aids that are from the last 28 yrs. even if its all the neils together and so on.

i would really like that lukas nelson set personally.

  9. Great! Thanks for this Big O.

Question for Nash The Slash - may be being dense Nash but the guitar101 forum you referred us to has the same 12 tracks and two versions one a radio version is FLAC but no more complete than Big O’s here which frankly is better quality on mp3!?
There’s a background hum high pitched noise on the FLAC that isn’t on this one!

    Am I missing something?

  12. neil sounds a little bummed out but its still a good show. an entire show of neil doing cover songs would be interesting. hard to believe some nitwit heckled him during the phil och’s story. thanks bigO.

  15. I’m a large Phil Ochs fan. There is not a bad version of changes anywhere. Neil reprising the song and Phil Ochs is a very nice touch. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

  16. Isn’t this the full set? I listened, it looks like the full set.

    By c 120 on Sep 25, 2013

  18. yes nick its just under 41mins. the shortest of the main acts. mellencamp matthews and nelson were all longer. as i explained above.

By darth on Sep 25, 2013

  19. i cant believe i have to make a new id on youtube so i dont get stalked by some idiot. just so people know what the idiot above is referring to.. since he was too stupid to explain it.. i searched for the elton john performance he did on the emmys the other nite. some idiot posted that he had it there and then uploaded a totally different performance misleading anyone who clicked on that link during a search. ill never understand stalkers. sigh. cowardly ones no less who are too afraid to use their regular id’s. tsk tsk.

By darth on Sep 25, 2013

  20. jack JOHNSON and WILLIE nelson? I sure hope someone doesn’t make any childish penis jokes here.

By Throm Bosis on Sep 25, 2013

  21. I read somewhere that the Neil set was actually longer. Was that information incorrect? Or is it that the YouTube stream was the full set and the radio carried a shorter version of the set?
Thanks BigO for sharing the Neil set here.

I recognized that face Neil pulled - same face my grandpa used to pull whenever he had bad gas.

  24. if i used an idea of yours youd be able to keep stalking me. oh thats right. its not u. i forgot.

chum - no his set was just under 41mins. it was carried live as it happened.

By darth on Sep 25, 2013

  25. You’re right, darth. I never thought I’d type those words, but you’re right- it’s not me. Someone else has to take credit for discovering “darthkards”.

Here’s an idea- change your behavior, not your ID.

By Dingus on Sep 25, 2013

  26. some idiot posted that he had it there and then uploaded a totally different performance misleading anyone who clicked on that link during a search.

you have mislead people here on many occasions.
does that also make you an idiot?

    By d arth on Sep 25, 2013

  27. my behavior is fine. stalking isnt!!
    ==
using my name again?? didnt we go thru this? posting a video with the wrong title in an effort to get people to click on it thinking theyre going to see one show and they see another is intentionally deceiving. i have never done that. harassment makes u an idiot.

By darth on Sep 25, 2013

  28. with the cover of the Phil Ochs song that as Neil put it “most of you have never heard” If that’s true for you - please check out this gem here on the bigO http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=560

By dwight on Sep 26, 2013

  29. If your behavior was “fine”, you wouldn’t be concerned about being “stalked”.

If your behavior was “fine”, you wouldn’t have deleted your comment.

    tsk tsk.

By Dingus on Sep 26, 2013

  30. As a music fan from the UK, is there anyway you can set up a page for Darth’s comments so that people who just want to attack him all the time can post to that page so that anyone who is just interested in the music doesn’t have to wade through reams of playground-style insults?

By MarkyJ on Sep 27, 2013

  31. i dont think we can delete our own comments. can we? how? which comment was deleted?
and that line u said first doesnt make any sense. my behavior being fine has nothing to do with your behavior. im not worried about being stalked. im merely pointing it out. i dont stalk anyone. i have better things to do with my time. why dont u? im not ashamed of what i say on this forum or any other. i stand by everything i have said. so yes.. my behavior is fine. its yours that isnt.

By darth on Sep 27, 2013

  32. marky - they did that. but these assholes wouldnt use it. they felt the need to keep posting under each of the concerts and other items here like this. there was even a subject heading entitled darth and other fake names or something to that affect. people like these idiots who have nothing better to do with their time want u to read their garbage so they wont stop posting here.

By darth on Sep 27, 2013

  33. whats that smell?

By hyuk hyuk on Sep 27, 2013

  34. darth, you deleted your nasty comment on YouTube, the one that “wrong again darth” copied & pasted in his comment above in this post. Your comment was ”yo idiot.. u uploaded the wrong video. or u mistitled the one u did upload….”

“im not ashamed of what i say on this forum or any other.”
Then why did you delete your comment on YouTube? Why change your name?

“i have better things to do with my time.”
Apparently not. Unless by “better things” you mean insulting people on YouTube.
    http://www.youtube.com/user/darthkards

“these idiots who have nothing better to do with their time want u to read their garbage”
Pot and kettle. Why are you reading our garbage? Don’t you have better things to do with your time?

By Dingus on Sep 27, 2013

  35. i didnt delete any comment on youtube. if it was deleted i would guess the poster of the video itself deleted it. did u ask him before ignorantly accusing me? wouldnt it make sense to do that? why would i delete a comment after posting it? i wouldnt have put it there if i didnt want it there. it makes no sense to suggest that i deleted it. did u even think before making a ridiculous accusation like this?

as for why changing my id for youtube i already explained this. youre a stalker.

when i say i have better things to do with my time it means than u. it means i dont stalk people and harass them online. u do. u dont have better things to do. i do. cmon now.. this isnt that difficult to keep up with. are u just playing stupid or what?

and yes.. pot and kettle.. that applies to u.. not me!!!! hello?!?!?!?!
im the one who is making postings here that u are commenting on. not the other way around. u are the one sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for my postings so that u can respond to them. it isnt the other way around. im not the one ruining this site.. thats u. im not the one who said he wasnt going to do what youre doing anymore.. u said that. and u arent keeping your word. what u do with your time shouldnt have anything to do with what i do with mine. my life doesnt depend on u. yours shouldnt depend on me.
