THE ROLLING STONES
Complete ‘73 Affair [The Godfatherecords G.R. 334/335, 2CD]

Live at the Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria; September 1, 1973, the opening show of the 1973 Tour of Europe. Very good audience mono. From CD-R rip.

When the Stones finally gave their blessings to release the often bootlegged Brussels’ show, The Guardian’s John Harris, poured out a loving review.

“This was late 1973, when Goat’s Head Soup had just been released - and, according to retrospective received opinion, the Stones had exited the run of form that stretched from 1968 to 1972. To my mind, this view of things omits how good large swathes of GHS actually were, a point underlined here by versions of Dancing With Mr D, Star Star (or, if you prefer, Starfucker), Angie and Doo Doo Doo Dooo (Heartbreaker).”

Harris also was pleased as punch with the swift, inventive and melodic guitar pickings of Mick Taylor. He said: Mick Taylor’s soloing threads itself through the rest of the music with grace and understatement” and praised Taylor’s “11-minute reading of You Can’t Always Get What You Want, so all is well”. On this Austrian show, Taylor trims it back to seven minutes.

While all the energy is captured here, one would have wished for a better recording. The mix is very loud with the guitars up front and always fighting with Jagger’s vocals for presence. The first two tracks are a murky start but by Gimme Shelter, it’s guitars vs vocals. The highlight though are how the Stones tackle Goats Head Soup songs in a live setting. This is before all that sound-shaping, high tech gear arrived and it’s just a stage with speaker and amps all around. The band generate their own energy with Jagger an animal on stage. Ah, Jagger unambiguously singing Starfucker. “Yes you are, yes you are!”

So sit back, relax and enjoy the vintage twin-guitar attack of ‘73 Stones. This was the tour’s opening show. Better sound quality can be found on the bonus tracks on Disc Two, taken from soundboard recordings.

  4. Not to complain, Big-O, but… so much wonderful music, so little time alive in this little life to enjoy it all to it’s fullest.
What a treat this is, can’t wait to hear it! Man, you sure know how to get the juices flowing on a dead morning.

  5. this is the stones we all loved when they really mattered, not now when they drag up pop tarts like taylor swift onto the stage with them.

  6. Thanks for the upload.

I really don’t understand why this isn’t available as a FLAC in United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France or Germany….

By Pete on Oct 23, 2013

  7. Agreed Tony. They were great then. But they also recently dragged out Jeff Beck too.

  11. darth, he said he didn’t understand WHY, not that he didn’t understand. Stop being a dick. Get a life. Shut the fuck up.

By Constructive Criticism and Friendly Advice on Oct 24, 2013

  12. as i said.. what youre doing isnt friendly. i didnt ask for it. its not constructive at all. what u call criticism is worthless. telling anyone to shut the fuck up is not going to work. youre wasting your time. i understood completely what he said. i didnt need u to repeat it for me. i explained that this site makes things available in mp3 format and not flac. and i did what u dont do even tho your id claims otherwise. idiot.

  13. Ahhh, The Stones back in the day when they still had full swagger and boogie. They also still had Mick Taylor for their bad boy double AXX rip the ears off rockin’ power! If only there were soundboard for the Vienna and Los Angeles Forum concerts. The bonus soundboard tracks are so good to enjoy. Thanks BigO!!
