GROUNDHOGS
Karlsruhe  1971 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Oststadthalle, Karlsruhe, Germany; September 14, 1971. Fairly good to good audience recording.

This one’s for those who are looking for more Groundhogs.

Thanks to CoolSonics and kneesfudd for sharing this at Dime.

CoolSonics noted:

Thanks to the original taper & trader!… This one will turn yer socks green & put another layer of moss between yer ears. It ain’t acoustic nor for the faint of heart. British blues run amok in electric guitar effects land. The “Still A Fool” experiment goes on for 18 minutes. Enjoy if yer ears are in the right place, but probably not one for the grandkids.

kneesfudd added: “Bit of channel volume fluctuation at times.”

Recording Information:
unknown stereo equipment > master audience tape > 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2011-07-25:
1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized > Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder > CD-RW > computer, EAC secure > wavs > Audacity (fades &/or glitches, volume adjustments, no EQ) > CD Wave (track splits) > Trader’s Little Helper

  3. Again Wow! Thanks Big O!

Saw The Groundhogs several times way back and they were a stalwart of the blues featuring open air gigs, free festivals and doing the concert rounds. Tony McPhee at his jamming best and as is noted not for all my grandchildren out there!

    Thank YOO!

  4. The Groundhogs – one of my favourite bands of my youth (among with Hendrix, the Stones, Ten Years After and the Bluesbreakers)! Thanks alot! 1971 they supported John Mayall in Switzerland but I missed that gig. What I’ve heard about the Groundhogs was At least some twenty years later I attented a Groundhogs gig in Luzern, Switzerland, but McPhee & band had lost alot of power and magic which depressed me a bit. In its heydays the Groundhogs were a great band and McPhee an inventiv virtuoso. He played up there with the creme of british guitar greats. Cheers Tony

  8. Thank you. I’m a fan of other blues bands from this era (Ten Years After, Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Long John Baldry, John Mayall) but I’d never heard of the Groundhogs until today. Usually live recordings aren’t a great introduction to a band, but I’ve been playing this all day, and I’ll be hunting for the vinyl.

  9. Hey BigO..thanks for yet another batch of rare early Groundhogs! Raw, rough, and raucous! McPhee was one of the UK’s best kept secrets…right up there with Alvin Lee when it came to the guitar licks…can’t get enough of this hard edge bluesrock. I don’t have any grandchildren, so I can crank it up with no side effects. Can’t believe that only 3 players can create such a teeth rattling wall of sound. Thanks again!!!

  12. Darth - thanks for the info. Unlike certain others, your posts are informative and illustrate your passion for the music (that IS what this site is SUPPOSED to be about). KEEP ROCKIN’…tdc

  13. tdc - if only everyone else felt the same. even when the facts are presented and proven (and even if they arent proven - so what?) some people have nothing better to do. sigh.
    ty so much for noticing.

By darth on Oct 25, 2013

  14. “even when the facts are presented and proven”

The facts are presented and proven by others to show that you’ve made yet another mistake (or lie). Hazy crazy memories aren’t facts.

“(and even if they arent proven - so what?)”
So… they’re mistakes or lies. Duh.

By Dingus on Oct 25, 2013

  15. just cuz a fact isnt proven to u.. doesnt mean its not a fact. i dont live to prove things to u. sometimes facts can be accepted on their own. and sometimes some facts are evident to the listener such as for example in a case like an album having a fake audience tacked on when the recordings are studio sessions and not actually in front of a real human audience in an effort to mislead the public. such a case that comes to mind.. is um.. let me think.. ahh yes.. depeche mode. they had a ‘live’ album back in the early 90s i believe. all one has to do is listen to it. its similar to several other ‘live’ albums from the 60s 70s 80s where this was done. another similar one was done where actual live recordings were made but where the doctoring was extremely evident in so far as the audience is concerned and who knows how much of the music as well? which album u ask? oh thats an easy one.. billy joel!! u remember the one. its his first ‘live’ one from 1981. i refer u back to a previous discussion about it.

I DO NOT LIE. EVER!!! AND I DONT HAVE HAZY CRAZY MEMORIES THAT ARENT FACTS. EVER!!
IF SOMETHING I SAY ISNT PROVEN THAT DOESNT MAKE IT A LILE OR A MISTAKE. I DONT LIVE TO PROVE THINGS TO U. FIND A LIFE!! FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO!!

  16. THATS LIE* NOT LILE

  17. “i refer u back to a previous discussion about it.”

Ah yes, the discussion where you were proven wrong with links to credible web sites. We’ve had a lot of those discussions lately. No need to rehash it here.

  22. Hey you ALL – what the fuck is this kid stuff all about? And I thought that music is a force that brings people together….!!!!

By Tony Lauber on Oct 27, 2013

  23. it is, Tony, but one entity here has an unfortunate habit of making mistakes and lying, and some of us correct him. he doesnt appreciate the corrections.

By barth on Oct 27, 2013

  24. I agree, Tony, but unfortunately, one bad troll, in this case darth, can ruin the whole bunch.

By Innocent Bystander on Oct 27, 2013

  25. Agreed but all the comments you guys make are worse and far more painful for the rest of us to read.

By Dingus on Oct 27, 2013

  26. darth’s mistakes, lies, and cursing rants are far more painful than the corrections. His comments have regularly been proven wrong by several credible web sites, but he continues to argue. A sane person would just walk away.

By Dingus on Oct 27, 2013

  27. but then again I’m anything but sane…guess that’s what keeps me coming back.I lead a boring life (sigh).

By Dingus on Oct 27, 2013

  28. I think it’s because, like me,you feel empowered pointing out others’ mistakes and it takes the light off your own.just saying is all…

By lowend darthlick on Oct 27, 2013

  29. I don’t feel empowered at all, it’s just a correction of a mistake.

By Dingus on Oct 27, 2013

  30. no…i think you do feel empowered.we’re all human and you need to forgive, get over it and move on…

  35. Here is a request from Lola Chambers:

I am currently writing a book on our lives. My husband is Lester Chambers. If anyone would like to contribute memories or pictures, please write me at [email protected]. Regarding this darth, I do remember requesting a copy for our sons to see their father and uncles (since we had NO live footage of them) and he was charging way too much (certainly not $10) for us to afford. To be selling film footage WITHOUT THE BROTHERS PERMISSION IS ILLEGAL ANYWAYS BUT IT SEEMS EVERYONE GETS AWAY WITH IT. WOLFGANG VAULT is one of them and has been sued by many groups that can afford a lawyer. I spoke in 2002 at a California Senate hearing with Don Henley, Mrs. Bing Crosby, etc. trying to enact legislature governing the music industry. One of the Dixie Chicks hugged me after my speech, in which I told how THE CHAMBERS BROTHERS ARE PROBABLY THE BEST EXAMPLE OF RECORD COMPANY EMBEZZLEMENT. No other artist can say that their hit song has been illegally licensed to over 100 films, TV and commercials WITHOUT THE BROTHERS CONSENT AND NO PAYMENT UNTIL LESTER JOINED A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT SUING FOR PENSION EMBEZZLEMENT IN 1994.
