BOB DYLAN
Amsterdam 2013 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; October 30, 2013. Very good audience recording.

LC Barnard posted the following at boblinks.com:

At just after 8 pm Bob and the band came on stage. Very, very dimly lit, but with interesting use of lights sitting on top of large tripods. Also much more innovative use of lighting against the back curtain compared to previous years. And no organ, but a piano. Bob kicked things off center stage with a solid Things Have Changed, followed by a fantastic arrangement of She Belongs to Me, which was to be the last song from the 1960’s till the encore. For the remainder, he focused on songs from Tempest and other recent albums, which to me was just fine.

I enjoyed the concert much more than those of the last couple of years, where the organ and blues/rock shuffle (if you know what I mean) has become a bit repetitive and all songs squashed to the same tempo and sound. In Amsterdam, the mix was excellent, with Bob’s vocals very prominent and used to great effect in Love Sick, Spirit on the Water, and Long and Wasted Years. To me, the crowd was also very hushed during songs - clear testimony that he was hitting the spot. In the past the Dutch crowd tended to engage in loud conversations during some songs. All in all one of the best shows I’ve seen in several years…

Thanks to 3dogs for taping the show and to icewalt for sharing the tracks at Dime.

  2. that jimi hendrix american masters 2 hour program that has never been on tv before is on now on pbs. if anyone is able to catch this announcement in time.. turn on your pbs station. it has never before seen footage interviews photos and so on. this is good stuff. its called hear my train a-comin.

  3. last night my local pbs tv station broadcast the film “Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train A Comin’” as part of their “american masters” series. i highly recommend it.

if u missed it u can watch it here: http://tinyurl.com/qyt97vt

    pbs sez:
Hear My Train A Comin’ unveils previously unseen performance footage and home movies taken by Hendrix and drummer Mitch Mitchell while sourcing an extensive archive of photographs, drawings, family letters and more to provide new insight into the musician’s personality and genius.
The two-hour film uses Hendrix’s own words to tell his story, illustrated through archival interviews and illuminated with commentary from family, well-known friends and musicians including Paul McCartney, band members Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, long-time sound engineer Eddie Kramer; Steve Winwood, Vernon Reid, Billy Gibbons, Dweezil Zappa and Dave Mason.

The film also features revealing glimpses into Jimi and his era from the three women closest to him: Linda Keith (the girlfriend who introduced Jimi to future manager Chas Chandler), Faye Pridgon (who befriended Hendrix in Harlem in the early 1960s) and Colette Mimram (one of the era’s most influential fashion trendsetters who provided inspiration for Hendrix’s signature look and created such memorable stage costumes as the beaded jacket Hendrix famously wore at Woodstock).

Among the previously unseen treasures in Hear My Train A Comin’ is recently uncovered film footage of Hendrix at the 1968 Miami Pop Festival.

American Masters: Jimi Hendrix – Hear My Train A Comin’ is a production of Fuse Films and THIRTEEN’s American Masters in association with WNET. Bob Smeaton is director.

darth, how about trying to keep the posts on topic for a change ,
    this is a dylan post.

    my response -
did u notice that my posting was just over 3 lines where the post immediately afterwards which u made no reference to oddly enough was 21 lines not counting blank lines between paragraphs. i find it interesting altho predictable that u would attack me for my posting yet totally ignore that other idiot for his. the topic of his was exactly identical to mine yet hypocritically u ignored what he posted about and chose to go after what i posted about. fascinating. since there wasnt a current jimi item and this dylan item was brand new and likely to get seen by many people i thought that it might be a better bet to post what i did here. not that i have to explain why i do what i do to u but since u dont understand the methods to my ahem.. madness and u are likely to repeat your stupidity again i figured now is as good a time as any to nip this in the bud. im willing to bet tho that even with this explanation it wont prevent u from doing this again. mark my word. youve done it before.. youll do it again. if u dont like my postings.. dont read them. posting how much u dont like them or telling me what to post or what not to post only contributes to the off subject matter comments that u are complaining about in the first place because now i had to explain to u why etc. see? so in harassing me youve actually made the situation worse.

  28. bob dylans “farewell” is featured on the the soundtrack album and trailer for the upcoming coen brothers movie “inside llewyn davis” a look at the ’60s greenwich village folk music scene.

the t-bone burnett produced soundtrack album is now streaming in full on npr’s “first listen” web site. oscar isaac justin timberlake and the lovely and talented carey mulligan star and sing in the movie. john goodman also stars but is not on the soundtrack album. too bad he probably could have played dave van ronk.

As ever, shame about the children spoiling the comments

By marpleman on Nov 9, 2013

  32. I relate to what sluggo, marpleman and dwight say about Bob’s voice but having seen him back in 2009 over here at The Roundhouse he has sounded like this for years now and I urge you to listen to this! Why he positively ‘SINGS’ on certain tracks! Early songs he extends his voice and sounds like he is enjoying it all - he must be mustn’t he? There is I admit a tendency for the phrasing later to get lazy similar and somewhat repetitive and they begin to sound interchangeable but the sheer quality alone makes this HIGHLY recommended. I REALLY enjoyed it! Thanks again Bi O!

Sorry to go off thread but I haven’t anything to say about Darth! Wasn’t he my father?

  33. a new 4cd box set of buffalo springfield is out and has lots of goodies that are previously unreleased. read about it here -

By darth on Nov 9, 2013

  34. A rip-off released for unsuspecting holiday shoppers. A 4 CD set from a band that only released three LPs. Over half the songs from their final album are omitted. Every song on disc 4 except two is identical to songs on the first three discs. Not one live track, even though the booklet constantly mentions what a great live act they were. 22 demos and 6 remixes, but very few details about the previously unreleased tracks. The 82 page booklet is mostly reprints of vintage clippings. Very disappointing. Pardon my negativity, but I’m not a shill for bands or e-commerce sites.

By Dingus on Nov 10, 2013

  35. I love Buffalo Springfield but Dingus is right this is nothing but a rehash of the previously released [2001] box set which Darth would have known about if he ever read one of his links.

By sluggo on Nov 10, 2013

  36. Looks like darth didn’t understand what “reformatted version… of the 2001 box set” meant. He was too busy trying to instigate arguments elsewhere.

It’s unfortunate that they’d reissue such an incomplete package, they could have corrected their mistakes with this one. They could easily have a first rate three-CD box with all the original songs plus unreleased studio & live tracks. I’d buy it, my vinyl isn’t getting any newer.

By Dingus on Nov 10, 2013

  37. I re-iterate, is there NOBODY else on here who finds this BOB DYLAN bootleg of the Amsterdam gig ASTONISHING!?? Great set and GREAT quality for an audience recording! HOW do they do THAT?

Sorry to shout but trying to be heard above the clamour and noisy prattle about someone posting stuff about some second rate Buffalo Chips

By swappers on Nov 10, 2013

  38. swappers, i just can’t get past Dylan’s voice. It’s gone, it’s never coming back, and for me, it’s painful to listen to. He does his best with what he has. The band is great, so are the songs, but there’s that voice.

I agree, it’s second rate Buffalo chips, that’s why I wrote about it. I thought it might be a good purchase, it’s under $30 on Amazon, but after I did some research, it was obvious that it’s a bad deal. It would have helped BS fans if darth had spent a few minutes to do some research before posting his link to a site that only gives prices to members who sign in.

By Dingus on Nov 10, 2013

  39. dingus nails it.
    Bob owes us nothing.
Yeah , his voice is painfully shot but man, what a catalogue.

By sluggo on Nov 10, 2013

  40. i only posted the link for ppl to read up on it if they didnt know about its existence. not for them to buy it. personally im only interested in the 36 trax that i may or may not have owned. i will dl those and put them on 2 cds. i assume they wont fit on 1. i read the article myself and figured there might be people here that didnt have time to hear about the box. not everyone has everything. im betting not everyone has the 01 set either. even huge fans of the buffalo springfield. some probably dont have their set from the other year when they played neils bridge school benefit. thats available for viewing and of course dl’ing on youtube.

btw.. i didnt get neils set from this years bridge school benefit. ahem. it would be nice to find it here along with his contributions to the other acts sets. hint hint.

also.. i dont always keep track but.. have there been any fms or sbds of any dylan shows since 2009? that means 2009 or 2010 or 2011 or 2012 or this year? i dont seem to recall any. i think i recall one or two from 08 altho im not positive. sure every show is recorded by audience members but what do we have in so far as sbd / tv / fm?

By darth on Nov 11, 2013

  41. “i assume”
You ASSume? Just like you ASSumed that electric guitars were acoustic? Just like you ASSumed that Mick Taylor left the Stones after Goat’s Head Soup?

“im betting not everyone has the 01 set either.”
You’re BETting? That’s like ASSuming! You know what happens when you ASSume, don’t U? But that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard anyway, how could EVERYONE possibly have the 2001 set?

    “sure every show is recorded”
You’re SURE? Isn’t that like ASSuming too?

By Dingus on Nov 11, 2013

  42. once again.. i quoted.. and i proved where i got the quote from by linking the page where it came from.. the site that stated it was acoustic. i didnt even watch the clip. i didnt look at it to see any electric guitars. i was showing people here who were interested in the article what it said. i did eventually look at the clip afterwards. sure it appears that there are electric guitars on it but im not the one who said it was acoustic. i was quoting someone else. whats wrong with u?

and if not everyone has the buffalo springfield box set from 01 then me assuming as much isnt an incorrect assumption. so im right on the money there arent i? it would be a good bet on my part huh.

on the mick taylor thing. again i quoted another article. i gave the link.

By darth on Nov 11, 2013

  43. LIAR! You quoted someone else the next day after you finally found a blog writer as clueless as you.

“im not the one who said it was acoustic.” LIAR!

“f anyone is anal about info details.. the above clip is from the nyc mtv studios in mid to late 94. i dont have an exact date on it sorry. its obviously acoustic and it is officially released. the video clip is 5′27 but on the cd it was released on as a collection of 120 minutes performances its 5′38. i dont know if the oct 24th date at the beginning of the clip is the actual date of the performance or not. i suppose it might be. victoria will be 55 in 2 months and this song (but not from this performance) is also part of a collection she released that year 19 years ago when she was 35.

  44. yes i got that info from a site. i then gave the source later on with the direct quote where i got the info from. i didnt copy the page word for word the first time i posted what i did. i did that the 2nd time. i posted the first time using my own words from the info i read on the site. i have the right to do that. i never lie. the fact that it came from mtv studios and that it was officially released as a collection of 120 minutes performances and the length etc. came from yet another site btw.

By InnocentBystander on Nov 11, 2013

  50. darth, you can’t prove something that never happened, but you need to, since you made the accusation. You obviously misinterpreted something I wrote, just like you misinterpreted “Everyone I know on a Windows machine” as “everyone who has windows”. i dont ever bookmark anyones postings on here. without exception. i have admitted when i have made mistakes. i explained the rolling stone newsletter problem and i sent thru the correct link. they do make that problem with their links in their emails. it has nothing to do with me.

By Dingus on Nov 11, 2013

  57. darth, someone who behaves the way you do is clearly either deeply sad and lonely or a psychopath. In the past, I’ve assumed the latter and attacked you, now I’m trying to show compassion and give you the benefit of the doubt. You seem like someone who is desperately seeking love and friendship, but, most likely due to a history of dysfunctional relationships going back to early childhood, doesn’t have the slightest idea of how to interact with people in healthy and constructive ways, so you make up ridiculous stores about yourself, share “information” that’s often dubious or simply doesn’t belong here, like your TV listings, and, of course, you lash out in rage. I’d like to suggest, however unlikely it might be that you’ll take my suggestion, that you step back and look at your own behavior. That’s all. Attack me if that’s what it feels like you need to do. I don’t mind. But, please, think about what I’m saying.

  60. why would it take strange to know strange? i dont get that at all. it doesnt make any sense whatsoever.
    ———–
innoc - i think u should read what u wrote and realize that much of it explains your own behavior. not mine. youre not in a position to diagnose others. i dont know what it is u have a problem with since everything u said is ridiculous and preposterous. the tv listings are of live performances by musicians that have often been on this site. people who enjoy those performances have come here to download them and others like them and might enjoy knowing about them. i have seen ppl thank me for my postings. u dont have to appreciate all that i post. i dont enjoy all yours. not everyone can enjoy everyones postings. life isnt like that.
he who chisels himself to suit others will soon whittle himself away.
u arent fixing things about yourself to make me happy are u? if not.. why would u think i would do that about me for u? nearly 100% if not absolutely 100% of everything u say is incorrect about me (and what is correct is a lucky guess - not based on anything u could know first hand) so why would i give things u say any merit? its not as if u have a clue. i dont know what is wrong with u nor do i really give a flying fuck. u say i dont know how to interact with people.. do u think u are interacting with me in a healy and constructive manner?
none of my stories are ridiculous nor made up. every single one of them are true and accurate. u dont have to believe them. that wont make them any less real. i wont lose sleep over whether or not u have proof that they happened. when they were happening at the time i wasnt worried about whether or not 30+ years later some idiot(s) would question their validity. as i see it.. its just jealousy. the only things i have to prove anything i guess is pics from 1980-95 or so. and at this point even if i had the ability to show them to u.. i wouldnt. several reasons. first of all.. why? 2nd of all.. u would only say theyre fake or not mine or ud come up with some other bullshit to throw in my direction. maybe ud say how do u know i took them? i dont know. i dont care. it doesnt matter. im not showing u anything. im not interested in proving anything to u. i will show my pics when i am able to.. to friends of mine who have been looking forward to seeing them since 2002. i had many of them scanned in 2001-02 and sold some on ebay til july 02. i even found someone selling some a few yrs ago who had bought a bunch of my discarded pics for outrageous prices. needless to say they didnt end up doing well with them. i wish i had copied the pages so id have images. something they had done that i hadnt.
the point is.. u arent that important. that is.. important enough that i need to prove anything to u. u seem to think that just because u dont believe things i have said on here that theyre ridiculous made up stories. that just sounds like jealousy because your life is boring. im sorry but not all of us have led boring lives. some of my life has been boring too. but from the years 1980-95 i led a pretty exciting life. there were things i did prior to 1980 that were also great too but not as much.
u say what i post here doesnt belong here.. does what u are posting belong here?? funny how that works just one way.
no i dont want your suggestion. i didnt ask for it.. and i never suggested that i was interested in it. u have never shown me once that u were interested in my friendship or out for anything other than to annoy instigate harass offend antagonize provoke etc etc. u know exactly what youre doing.
my behavior is fine. it is your own u should look into. without any of the behavior from u and your allies as it has been towards me.. u wouldnt find a problem with mine. dont initiate it and there is no response. i know what im saying is falling on blind eyes. thats how it has been for several years with u. nothing will change. its how u are.
i dont attack u. i never did. it is on the contrary u attacking me and me responding. evidently its what u feel u need to do. i dont need to think about what youre saying any more than u will think about what i just said.

  69. Silly to say Dylan’s voice has gone — It upped and walked out decades ago.

But he remains a great song-writer and a very dedicated entertainer.
with what fragments he has left of what was once a painfully edgy, nasal mess of a voice, he is demonstrating how to grow old gracefully.

Me, I love the “new” Dylan every bit as much as I did the old.
To me, he has matured like the finest of wines or cheeses; perhaps that is why some people who lack discernment and soul fail to enjoy it.

That’s fine by me… more for us, right?

By tony on Nov 12, 2013

  70. Tony, agreed. Bob’s doing what he can with what he’s got (I do prefer this to the late 80’s myself). Unfortunately, the vocal limitations are sadly and terribly magnified by most audience recordings. A good soundboard or excellent audience really does allow the listener to hear a lot more range and subtlety (for what’s left of it) than most boots do.

  73. DARTH THE ASS IN ANGRY RESPONSE ON BIG O

Darth, Supreme Ass Of The Universe, displayed badly-faked anger today on the popular and much appreciated Big O music site.
Feigning anger as he does in the majority of his posts, he sent over 50 other site visitors to sleep in a matter of seconds.

    President Obama is rumored to have said;
“I’m sending our boys in to invade Darth. He is a clear and present danger to freedom, civility, and most of all to the pursuit of happiness.
His string of mistakes is phenomenal, I heard that he thinks Handel’s Largo is brewed in Munich.”

  80. i’m baaaaack! But I don’t have the stones to use my regular name since everyone made me look like an idiot so I copy other names because I’m a humorless dimwit and I’m not as funny as I think I am and I can’t even come up with original insults so I just repeat what other people say and then accuse them of wasting people’s time here. Case closed. Did I mention I have an anal fixation?

By joe colostrum on Nov 13, 2013

  81. darth’s response was what I expected, as was that of the commenter who’s either his alter-ego or some adolescent who defends him just for the sake of trolling. It’s sad, but someone with the kind of profound antisocial personality that’s so obvious in darth finds it very difficult to accept help or friendship, or even recognize it when it’s offered. Sincerity makes him uncomfortable, as does compassion, and that’s understandable given what I’m sure is his highly dysfunctional background.

By InnocentBystander on Nov 13, 2013

  82. DARTH IN IDENTITY THEFT

Darth The Ass has stolen someone else’s name in order to respond to a posting on BigO.
This is not the first time that this phenomenon has been observed, it began some time ago when he adopted the name “darth” which is itself stolen from a fictional character from the movies.
It is believed that he has used many other names in order to respond to criticism from other posters.
This shows a marked lack of personality, in fact it is suspected that he has no personality at all, and he chose the name “darth” to reflect his tendency to hide behind a mask.

    This behavior also raises the question;
“Just how big of an ass can darth become?”

Physicists at MIT are concerned that if he grows to sufficient size, it will induce a gravitational collapse.
Depending on the accumulated mass at the point of this collapse, he might, at the very least, become a neutron ass, also called a pulsass. It is believed that this will result in a high-pitched farting noise every 5 milliseconds, as he spins pointlessly about his own axis due to the greatly increased angular velocity associated with the collapse. Of course, at this frequency of rotation, it will be perceived by the human ear as a constant whine, so nobody will notice.

If, however, he weighs more than a billion asses, he could collapse completely and tear the fabric of space-time, possibly disappearing up his own singularity.

    Professor Eithink Darthsakunt told us;
“We can’t really imagine what happens under these conditions. We need new mathematics to describe the physics of how matter and gravity interact at these enormous densities. If he does indeed turn himself inside out, he could even become a second Big Bang which kick-starts another universe, containing nothing but shit.”

  85. Was there really a 50 minute intermission mid-concert?

By soldout in SF on Nov 14, 2013

  86. soldout - if u add up the lengths of the songs in the first half of the show it will come out to 50mins. if u note that the 2nd half of the show also shows that theres a time stamp there that says 59mins it becomes a little more obvious. full show is about 109mins. i put all of this show on one cd and the last 4 songs on a 2nd cd to start it. that left me with an hour room on that 2nd cd. so i found an hour long dylan item and made me 2 full cds.

By darth on Nov 14, 2013

  87. soldout asked about the length of the mid-concert intermission. 50 minutes seems excessive to me. perhaps bob chooses the songs for the second set during the intermission. maybe hes playing wii.

mr dylan received the french legion d’honneur yesterday. he’s in good company with jerry lewis and sir paul mccartney. heres bobs acceptance speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUjGf2Grrus

  88. question “Was there really a 50 minute intermission mid-concert?

darth answer “if u add up the lengths of the songs in the first half of the show it will come out to 50mins. if u note that the 2nd half of the show also shows that theres a time stamp there that says 59mins it becomes a little more obvious. full show is about 109mins”

no wonder his info is so messed up he can`t even answer a simple question.

  92. Bob Dylan’s new video for “Like A Rolling Stone” is interactive- it has 16 fictional TV channels that you can change as the song progresses. Each channel has a different storyline and actors lip-syncing the song. One channel is D.A. Pennebaker’s live recording of Dylan and The Hawks in England, another is The Price Is Right with Drew Carey, another is a Just Kids cartoon. Have fun!

  94. I wonder how much input Bob had on the creative direction? All I’ve read so far is that it was created by Interlude and directed by Vania Heymann. It’s going to take a while to watch every channel, but it’s fun stuff.
