PERNICE BROTHERS
Sydney 2002 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Metro Theatre, Sydney, Australia; April 6, 2002. Very good soundboard.

The Pernice Brothers might be labelled “indie rock” but melodic jangle pop/rock might be more apt. Still, the opening words to the first track, Everyone Else Is Evolving, are “I hate my life”. Go figure. File this together with Scud Mountain Boys and Chappaquiddick Skyline.

Bernard Zuel wrote about the show at smh.com.au:

With his close-cropped hair, rough-hewn face and small nuggety frame, Joe Pernice has the look of a junior welterweight boxer. (Maybe not coincidentally, the original title of the most recent album of gentle and sad pop tunes by the “Brothers” was Sweet Like A Punch.)…

Yet when he sings he edges forward intimately, hunching into the microphone as if he’s going to whisper. And whisper he all but does. In the dreamy concoction of Bryte Side, his singing was almost an aside, so small-framed are the song and voice. In the gentle jangling of Crestfallen, the chorus line of “It’s a long way to fall” came out as a sigh, drifting away in the low-key arrangement of Pernice on acoustic guitar, Peyton Pinkerton on electric guitar and Thom Monahan sitting down to play unassuming bass.

Monahan’s posture was appropriate because this was a show for sitting down, to sprawl out and rest your head on your partner’s lap while someone nearby passed a joint and turned down the lights…

At first glance, there’s not much to the Pernice Brothers, and certainly no big knockout punch. But like Sugar Ray Leonard, they’re small but perfectly formed and quite often beautiful in motion.

  13. odd that u had such a problem with me starting a sentence with the word because yet u seem to have no problem typing sentences in the way u do. look at these. u call that an education? what school of learning taught u to start a sentence with the word ’sorry’ or ‘nothing’ in that manner? if i were u i wouldnt chastize anyone for how they talk/type. your english is close to if not the worst i have found on this site. if u changed id’s i would still know it was u behind the postings. thats embarrassing. dont bother responding. i dont know if i could handle laughing at u any more today. lol.
