THE RIDES
(Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Barry Goldberg)
Northridge, CA 2013 [no label, 2CD]

KCSN Benefit Concert. Live at the Valley Performing Arts Center, Cal State University Northridge, Northridge, CA; November 3, 2013. Very good audience recording.

In August, 2013, Stills stills released the album Can’t Get Enough with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg as the blues band The Rides.

“In the spirit of that simple, raw authentic ’40s and ’50s blues music the three of us love, we got in there and boom! A few takes and we were done,” says Stills. “The songs have muscle; they don’t sound dated or contrived. They’re very natural and organic. I can’t wait to tour with these guys and start recording again.” - uncut.co.uk

KCSN Fall Benefit Concert 2013 featuring the debut tour of Stephen Stills’ new band, The Rides. Hall of Famer Stills is joined by multiple Grammy nominee and winner Kenny Wayne Shepherd, as well as Barry Goldberg, in what will be a night of guitar hero worship. The Rides also includes bassist Kevin McCormick and former Stevie Ray Vaughan Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton, to form what Stills calls his “dream blues band.” - valleyperformingartscenter.org

Thanks to Falconidave who recorded the show and shared the tracks at Dime. Falconidave also provided the cover picture.

Falconidave added: “A very enjoyable end to an amazing night of music! We had a perfect crowd around us and no distractions whatsoever. Really cool to get to see Stephen Stills playing pure Blues. It definitely suits his voice at this stage of his life.”

  2. as filler one might want to stick the rides appearance from last weeks leno performance where they did dont want lies on the end of this. it was on the 5th of nov.

lenny kravitz is on ellen on the 12th. i think thats the only important tv appearance i havent announced lately.

By darth on Nov 11, 2013

  3. LIAR! lenny kravitz on ellen is NOT important!

Unless you’re a furry knuckle-dragging troglodyte who likes well-connected musicians who never had an original idea in their lives and thought it would be a good idea to appear on a country music awards TV show and play their 20 year-old hits to an audience who never heard of them and then get upset when they don’t sing along because they have no idea who the hell you are because you don’t sing about red solo cups and live in a double wide.

By Dingus on Nov 11, 2013

  4. your judgement that it isnt important doesnt make me a liar. he is a very good guitarist and that he is performing live and has many fans and that some of them may be on this site makes it important. what isnt important is your opinion.
the rest of that shit u posted doesnt make any sense and clearly youre drunk so i wont bother responding to it.

By darth on Nov 11, 2013

  5. LIAR! I’m sober! You obviously never saw Lenny’s appearance on some TV country awards show recently where he played 20 minutes over his time limit and no one in the audience clapped along with him because they didn’t recognize his hits so he got pissed and gave them both fingers as he walked off stage. You’re obviously a lying idiot and an illiterate who doesn’t know what free association is. Hint: it’s not stealing The Association’s music.

  6. darth, you’re truly a sad and lonely man, aren’t you?

  9. Thanks a lot BigO. This is a very good band!
All these 5 are pros musos. Check out their CD, Stills`voice has not been this good for ages. He is a far better and more interesting player than Clapton. I have seen KennyWayne live once, and he kicks ass! Great voice too

  13. wow - i thought the Cd was one of the biggest disappointments of the year so far - and this show doesn’t want to change my mind - and I think their decision to cover Rockin’ in the Free World - one of the worst choices possible - You can’t help but compare it to Neil’s version and it just doesn’t stand up

By dwight on Nov 12, 2013

  14. for people who do enjoy this band.. there will be a live pbs performance as part of a concert series called front and center this saturday nite the 16th. the info is here and if u dont get the program.. u can at least hear one track from it and even dl it with the link below -

  20. Thanks sluggo for the excellent video on Canada’s history and their willingness to defend others. My grandmother was originally from Canada. She was a telegraph “lineman” and saved my future grandfather who was a WWI U.S. soldier. He was almost dying from the Spanish Flu in 1918, basically thrown off a train in the middle of nowhere in Colorado, where she was climbing poles to fix the wires. He was returning from the War.

This is the first concert I’ve heard from my Univ. Thanks Big O.

  21. youre missing the point again. it doesnt matter which shows these people are on. u dont have to like the shows that they are on or the people who host the show or watch the entire show to catch them. i rarely do. just knowing they are on the show and catching the act later on either online or at the tail end or on youtube etc. in order to get the music portion of it is the important detail here. by my pointing out which shows theyre on doesnt mean im a fan of the hosts or the shows themselves or that i agree with their philosophies etc. im a fan of music and in many cases live music. i like collecting the live performances that happen on these shows. it can often be fun to own them and put them together or fill in the ends of cds with bits that are easily obtained and that are of a similar artist. all the bitching and moaning about what im posting is not going to get me to stop and i dont know why u are doing it. youre wasting your time and making yourselves out to be idiots by expending all that energy.

incidentally.. elton did one song on the graham norton show the other nite. the song was voyeur. while looking for it i found he also did the song levon on the bet hip hop awards show. great. i got one i didnt know about.
in my searches i found one of the 3 bonus tracks to the rides cd. best buy offered them and youtube had 1 of the 3. the radio edit isnt the important one i would care about but the other two are. so now that i have the acoustic version of dont want lies i only need the last of the 3.

theres a new version of rodgers and hammersteins oklahoma with hugh jackman starring in the national theatre’s production of it thats 3 hours long on my pbs station on the 15th at 9pm. ive seen bits and pieces of this. hes an amazing performer if anyone out there also appreciates him u may want to catch him in this.

and im sure that its a repeat for me and maybe not for others but i have paul mccartney in performance at the white house later that nite for 90mins with stevie wonder elvis costello jonas bros herbie hancock emmylou harris corinne bailey rae dave grohl faith hill lang lang and jack white.

the austin city limits for me that nite (16th) will be jim james (of my morning jacket) and the black angels. the latter band will do songs from their album indigo meadow. this is a brand new acl show.

the show here immediately after that is live from the artists den has mumford and sons from the belasco theater in la ca. its one hour and its originally from 6-27-13. ill have to find this to dl it.

  24. Thanks for this Big O!
Have thought that of the old CSN&Y only Y has been doing ANYTHING in recent years and what a great artist Young is to have kept the faith and stayed SO creative to such a degree. Had largely dismissed the rest as old fogeys stuck in the past doing pretty much nothing till a half baked reunion but here is evidence otherwise and nice to be proved wrong by an old hero
‘Word Game’ is a welcome reminder and some might apply it to recent posts above!

  32. Sorry to threadjack back to the music, but there was a pretty funny interview on the Huffington Post a few months ago that included Shepherd and Stills talking about the process of convincing a very reluctant Stills to take on “Search and Destroy.” Imagine the surprise that Stephen wasn’t much of an Iggy fan.

  35. Can you trolls stop using other’s legitimate ‘names’ here to stir up your rubbish?
The second posting purporting to come from ’swappers’ is not me and there are several more elsewhere that I haven’t written
You imagine the mediators in here don’t know who is writing this crap? The clues is in having to use legitimate email addresses. Some of you cretins are hoping for a Darth free zone then go set up your own blogosphere. Much of what Darth says is useful, informative and occasionally funny and sometimes he makes mistakes as do I, your bully boy tactics is none of those things. But I have no wish to ‘talk’ to him or you. It’s a blog and I post appreciation of Big O putting up awesome music. I come here to talk about music That is all. If you don’t like what someone posts ignore it. Don’t try to bully them! It won’t anyway

Stop it! Have the stones to stand by what you say and who you are
It just spoils it for for everyone
    Unless it’s funny!?
    Which it ain’t
    Just bully boy nonsense…….yawn

    Love peace and understanding

  36. Hi Swappers; the problem is that you don’t need a legitimate email address - try it and see.
You can put any fake address in the box and you can still post. For example, I posted this with [email protected] as my address. So, trying to block an address probably won’t work as it can be changed for anything you want.
