200 Motels: The Suites [no label, 2CD]

The Rest Is Noise Festival. Live at the Royal Festival Hall, London, UK; October 29, 2013 (broadcast on November 9, 2013). Excellent BBC Radio 3 broadcast.

Tom Service presents the UK premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels, a suite from the orchestral soundtrack to the American composer’s surrealist documentary film about life on the road as a rock musician. Containing very strong language throughout, it was banned from live performance in the UK in 1971 on grounds of obscenity, but was finally staged in London in October as part of the Rest is Noise festival, the South Bank’s ongoing survey of music from the twentieth century. Tom Service is joined by author Ben Watson, who makes the case for this work as Zappa’s misunderstood masterpiece.

Thanks to PsyKies who recorded the show and shared the tracks at Dime.

  8. WOW! Thanks, BigO! Saw Zappa Plays Zappa at the Beacon Theater in NYC on Halloween last month, and spotted Diva (who is in the above production) and Gail Zappa at the diner next door before the show. If you can get a chance to see that show, DO IT! They are playing the entire album Roxy and Elsewhere on this tour, and much, much more (they played a THREE HOUR set)! Great to see Frank’s music still being played!

  17. why would u think that? i couldnt care less who has things before me. in fact.. if no one has things before me.. where the hell would i get them? i have never in my life said i have this and no one else does or i found this before anyone else. that doesnt make me feel superior at all. i am the guy who loves sharing. i spend hours of every day trying to find people to share with. yes seriously. i have postings all over the place pushing what i have on other people. i have brought many many dozens of people to this site and other sites that they didnt know about in order to find music they wouldnt otherwise have. if i dont upload the music myself to them i link them to where they can dl it themselves. but i go thru a lot of trouble and spend a lot of my time trying to help others obtain films tv shows and music that they want. yes i also look for things i want but i also look for things i dont want in an effort to help others. i dont know where u get this idea that u having something that u think i dont have or that u got before me.. bothers me.
back in july 2002 i would say that 1/3 to 2/5s of my collection was material that i had really no interest in. the reason being that i kept it in case others might be interested in it cuz u knew it was popular and hugely collectible and sought after. much of it was very tradeable and i did a little bit of trading on audio and video tape back in the 80s and 90s up thru july 02. i didnt get into cdrs til may 06 and dvds til a couple of years later. funny now cds are being phased out and if u look around new laptops and cars are being made without cdroms and cd players.

  20. Juss for information . . . the recent postings from someone claiming to be ’swappers’ are not from me and as I said the other day. I’m tired of the trolling tosspots around here and will not play. Just as I am sure you are laughing at ‘darth’ responding to something I HAVEN’T said, it is a very small brain that takes pleasure in this
    Over and OUT!

  21. Thanks BigO! It’s rare indeed that anyone performs Zappa’s music these days for fun or profit since Gail Z and The Family Trust put the kibbosh on a lot of the oh-so-many tributes, well-meant or otherwise. I suppose it’s in their interest to make sure ZPZ is the only game in town (I’ve seen them more than once, and that was one time too many). Does The Trust not control stuff like this post, right down to the rental of the manuscript? I’m surprised this is here at all considering the overall atmosphere, but I’m very glad to see it. Very glad. Thank you again.

  23. “cruising with ruben & the jets” was released 45 years ago today. the cd reissues had new bass & drum tracks recorded by frank. “greasy love songs” released by the zappa family trust in 2010 has the original vinyl mix.
