STEELY DAN
Boca Raton, FL 2013 [no label, 2CD]

Mood Swings: 8 Miles to Pancake Day Tour. Live at the Count De Hoernle Amphitheater (formerly Mizner Park Amphitheatre), Boca Raton, FL; September 12, 2013. Excellent audience recording.

Max Johnston wrote at browardpalmbeach.com:

Without as much as a “Good evening,” they started in on “Your Gold Teeth” from their 1973 album. A song with an open enough structure to allow almost every member of the band a few bars to show us their stuff. Becker and Fagen are known for being incredibly selective about the caliber of musician they allow into their circles, so it was good stuff.

Next, right in to “Aja,” the wandering title track from their 1977 album. For most of the eight-minute song it was as spot-on as live music can be to the album version. The last part though, which is the best part, was not. Changing things up and making it your own is OK, except the drum part at the end of “Aja.”

All was forgiven immediately as the opening guitar lick of “Hey Nineteen” began. Who can be mad while that song is playing? What Walter Becker lacked in stage presence he made up for with a witty monologue roughly based on the lyrics of the song. Quite the crowd charmer when he decides speak…

Thanks to Datfly who recorded the show and shared the tracks at The Traders’ Den.

Datfly noted: “A hot and muggy South Florida evening but bearable by the cool breeze of Steely Dan.”

  2. a couple of the shows that sugarmegs has are 3 hours. i wonder what makes the band decide that one day theyll do a 2 hour show and another day theyll do a 3 hour show. especially in the same month. i can see that theyd do a different album or pair of albums from nite to nite in their entirety but im a little surprised that theyd give one batch of fans nearly an entire hours more music for their buck than another.
i dont think sd has done any tv appearances or has any scheduled this year. course if they do.. guess who will announce them. haha!!

  3. no static at all.
    thanks

By the grand kadookie on Nov 17, 2013

  4. darth, I already had all the Steely Dan shows on Sugarmegs, and none of them are 3 hours long.
The longest show there is 2 hours 32 minutes. It’s the only show there that requires 3 CDs if you burn it. Their 2013 has ended, so TV appearances don’t seem likely.

  5. Thank you BigO!!! Thank you thank you thank you!! Once again y’all come through with an amazing offering!!

    what ????
    he can`t be wrong

By the grand kadookie on Nov 17, 2013

  7. the review i read musta included the break as part of the length of the show. i never do. i didnt list how long the shows were based on my timings. i would only do that by the actual lengths of the sets etc. at 2′32 i would guess that a 15-20 min intermission at most wouldnt be 3 hours. so i guess people tend to round up when they review shows. i didnt see any of the shows this year so its not my timings. sorry for the misinformation. i guess 2′07 and 2′32 isnt that far off from one another. i wonder what the shortest show on the tour is vs the longest.

incidentally jim james and black angels are on austin city limits now. and immediately after is mumford & sons on live at the artists den on my pbs. pity i will have to wait for front and center for the rides. its not on here. sigh.

By darth on Nov 17, 2013

  8. Wrong again, darth. Your comment was about the shows on SugarMegs. That “review” had nothing to do with SugarMegs. Here’s a tip- next time, try looking at the set lists on SugarMegs before telling us how long the sets are. Idiot.

By Dingus on Nov 17, 2013

  9. Musicians are artists. Sometimes a 3 hour session happens; sometimes it doesn’t. I doubt there’s a conspiracy.

    Thanks, bigO!

By NAMoosedog on Nov 17, 2013

  10. Maybe they played a shorter set some nites, because they were taking a break to eat a plate of hot sausages backstage.

By Sausages on Nov 17, 2013

  11. I’ve only listened to Disc One, but this is great. Thanks for the post.

    By Dave C. on Nov 18, 2013

  12. nice one..these guys deliver every time.
wish they had done third world man.
Did becker and fagan actually play with jay and the americans or were they roadies or even connected. Seem to recall something like this from long ago.

By sluggo on Nov 18, 2013

  13. indeed they were sluggo. according to all music.com, “In 1970, the pair joined Jay & the Americans’ backing band, performing under pseudonyms; Becker chose Gustav Mahler, while Fagen used Tristan Fabriani. They stayed with Jay & the Americans until halfway through 1971, when they recorded the soundtrack for the low-budget film You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It, which was produced by the Americans’ Kenny Vance.” your memory is much better than a certain disreputable dunce who often appears here.

By barth on Nov 18, 2013

  14. I had that soundtrack you mention barth…don`t think I gave it too much of a listen tho..funny the names they chose to use as aliases…hard to imagine these guys playing cara mia why..LOL

By sluggo on Nov 18, 2013

  15. hey ya gotta start somewhere! i always likes cara mia its a great piece of pop.

By barth on Nov 18, 2013

  16. they only did one song on that soundtrack and it was released as a radio promo 45 as well. dave herman in ny (the one who recently was in the news as i mentioned in another comment) played it one nite as a rarity. he often played non lp b sides or other similar type rarites. that song - you gotta walk it like you talk it was considered a rarity thru out the 70s and 80s. i included it on the ends of some of my shorter than 90min steely dan audio tapes when i made them for others.

By darth on Nov 18, 2013

  17. heres the sd song mentioned above -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axay8XSDsVA

and heres another youtube clip that says its an instrumental -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RgsgmpYz5M

i found a few other clips but i dont know that they are worth posting.

By darth on Nov 18, 2013

  18. Thanks for this Bigo. And big thanks to whoever did the recording. Haven’t had chance to listen to it yet but you can never have too much Steely Dan!

By Big Trev on Nov 18, 2013

  19. ok thats dog eat dog and red giant white dwarf. sorry. but at least theyre from the album. 3′42 and 6′06 respectively. ignore the videos and enjoy the audiios.

By darth on Nov 18, 2013

  20. ok i found a site with a 19 album dl that includes 3 boots. 2 of the albums are 4cds and 2cds totaling 23 cds. i dont think its acceptable to share this here since most of it is official product but it includes the soundtrack in question and also android warehouse from 98 (2cds) and yellow peril from 2005.
i guess there is more than one song on the sndtrck that featured becker and fagen after all. i dont know why it was just that one song that was announced as being the one that featured them. maybe there was something special about it that made it stand out in some way that caused it to be sent around to radio stations as a promo. i know i saw it at more than one convention at prices i could never afford.

By darth on Nov 18, 2013

  21. Thanks Big O!

    more lies.

  24. “i dont know why it was just that one song that was announced as being the one that featured them.”

Well darth, considering that Dave Herman hasn’t had an NYC radio show since 1998, your memory is probably faulty again. Do ya think Dave played just one song from a third rate soundtrack for a forgettable movie? I do.

“at prices i could never afford.”
You mean the dealer was unwilling to let you have it for free?

Thanks for the link, frostee. I’d love to skip dart’s bullshit, but it’s endless.

Here’s some bad news on Dave Herman: http://tinyurl.com/l2scv5y

By Dingus on Nov 18, 2013

  25. darth what price were they asking for the album and what price would u have paid?

By barth on Nov 18, 2013

  26. the lp is available on ebay for as little as a couple bucks. It was never valued much higher than this i believe my copy was even a cutout so it was reduced even when it was released.
you know darth is going to quote you some ridiculous amount that he pulls out of the air somewhere yet he didn`t even know that fagen and becker and diaz wrote the entire album. don`t go to him for info he`s proven time and time again he has poor resources

By frostee the lawyer on Nov 18, 2013

  27. If I’d been paying attention in class I’d have seen that the recorder was Datfly. Nice work. And in case I forgot to say - You can never have too much Steely Dan!

  28. “at prices i could never afford.”
You mean the dealer was unwilling to let you have it for free?

no he offered a glossy pic of himself and gene simmons as trade.

  29. Just my two cents…a real Steely Dan rarity is their first ABC single Dallas / Sail The Waterway. Personally, I love these songs and think they would have fit in well with the Can’t Buy A Thrill material. Mr. Becker and Mr. Fagan apparently disagree with me. They’ve never reissued these two tracks aside from some British ep that came out later in the 70s. There might have been other reissues I don’t know of as well.

Both tracks are on YouTube. That’s the only way I’ve heard them, alas.

By mackdaddyg on Nov 19, 2013

    things away?

  32. Thanks frostee, I always like a good pedal steel. I didn’t save Gerty’s hits.

By Dingus on Nov 19, 2013

  33. I didn’t save Gerty’s hits.

yeah not too sure what that was all about.

By frostee the lawyer on Nov 19, 2013

  34. I think that half of the “Walk It Like You Talk It” soundtrack is pretty good, especially “Roll Back the Meaning.”

It’s also worth searching for the first Steely Dan single “Dallas b/w Sail the Waterway,” which was quickly withdrawn. These cuts have never been released on CD, but are available on bootleg. Poco later covered Dallas.

Can anyone point me to downloads of either of the following Becker/Fagan songs–”Canyon Ladies,” by Navasota, and “Running Child” by Christopher Kearney? Thanks

By Paul on Nov 21, 2013

  35. If you can find “First Grade” by Thomas Jefferson Kaye (available as an out-of-print and outrageously priced two-fer CD on Amazon, the Becker/Fagan cuts “Jones” and “American Lovers” are excellent. Finally, “My Sporting Life” by John Kay has the Becker/Fagan cut “Giles of the River.”

  37. its only 2 dates so far but they promise more dates will be announced soon.

    http://ultimateclassicrock.com/steely-dan-2014-tour/

also note.. glastonbury predicts a zep reunion with whats left of the band. if u look at the above link.. when done with that article look on the right side for the zep article.

incidentally its 20 yrs since cobain killed himself. and today (4-4) is the date when mlk was killed in 1968. i specify the date in case this appears to show up as 4-5 when i hit submit. and my mom is 75 today. happy birthday mom. hehe.

i dont know if there will be any live performances on it but this sunday (13th) mtv will have their movie awards from 9pm on. thats eastern time.

    while im here -
sat nites programming on pbs has -
sun studio sessions - tav falco & chelsea crowell (daughter of roseanne cash). thats a half hour show. its original music.
live from the artists den has sheryl crow from feb this year.. thats one hour.
as u know nin is on austin city limits recorded last november. im not a huge fan of this band but their performance from the 94 woodstock fest was mind numbing. 20 yrs ago.

on snl is pharrell. not my thing but hey. big people seem to like him. i cant always understand why musicians i love like the people they do but when they do i always give those people a chance to find out whats going on. i figure if they can put out music that touches me that strongly.. stuff they like must have some merit. a lot of the time it doesnt. sometimes it does. i dont get this pharrell guy. but some of u out there might.

By darth on Apr 4, 2014

maybe sooner or later u will get it that what u wish couldnt have less importance. especially when its that someone else would go away. im not going away. im not here for u. no more than u are here for me. u dont cater to my wishes do u? find another site to infest with your stupidity and ignorance and leave me the fuck alone u sniveling prick.
