The Complete Joel Bernstein Tapes [no label, 1CD]

Live at various venues and on various dates. Acoustic soundboard compilation, November 1976.

Thanks to Clyde the Camel who compiled the tracks and shared them at Dime in 2005 (the torrent is still active today). A pat on the back to gregor who is keeping the show alive at The Traders’ Den.

Clyde the Camel’s notes:

Joel Bernstein worked with Neil Young as a photographer and as his musical archivist. He compiled soundboard recordings of his favorite performances from Neil’s acoustic sets in November 1976. These recordings have been widely distributed for a long time - I believe they first appeared on vinyl under the title “Last Plane Outta Here.” (Vinyl is NOT the source of what I have here.)

Most Young collectors have these recordings, but most of them have the version taken from the bootleg titled “Acoustic Young,” which is missing two of the 22 songs: “Heart of Gold” and “A Man Needs a Maid.”

Here I’ve used the 20 tracks from “Acoustic Young” and inserted the missing songs in the original correct running order. Those two songs are take from the “River of Pride” bootleg, which I think has slightly lower sound quality compared with “Acoustic Young,” though you may not notice it. I’ve equalized the volume because the stuff was taken from two sources.

Note that although these are soundboard recordings, they are not direct from the master. The tapes were passed around between friends until someone finally bootleged them. I consider the sound to be excellent for a bootleg - especially one from 1976 - though it’s not official-release quality. It’s a very enjoyable disc, and I consider it to be an essential part of a good Neil Young collection.

  2. Wonderful, superb, brilliant, fantastic. Read about this tape a long time ago and wondered if I would ever hear it … Many thanks for sharing it with us. One regret … pity there was no Bob Dylan song on the list! Only joking…. Cheers.

  6. im surprised i havent seen the 2nd nites bridge school benefit performances posted complete anywhere.
i have the csny set from the first nite and all the neil appearances and graham joining in and neils set all in one file adding up to just 82mins. that would be nice to have if it happened on the 2nd nite too. the full tom waits set would be nice.

the non brdcst bruce songs from the theater at mad sq garden from a couple of weeks ago when he did that performance with roger waters would be nice too.

im not sure if anyone cares but lady antebellum did a nearly full hour long performance on the letterman show last week when they appeared i believe it was on the 14th. they probably only aired one song but a visit to the site or maybe youtube will help one find the full performance. several people have done similar shows like that. train mumford and sons and peter gabriel and many others. check it out.

  11. btw..
i mentioned the black angels were on half the show of austin city limits this past weekend and there is a single song clip in 3d of a rehearsal on youtube. the song is young men dead. u need the glasses to appreciate it in 3d but its a single camera filming. its a nice item to have the audio of however for ppl who want more.

other tv items recently include -
johnny marr - please please please let me get what i want (unaired) & generate! generate! (jimmy fallon ny 11-15-13)
bonnie raitt - love sneakin’ up on you (jimmy fallon ny 11-18-13)
ben harper & charlie musselwhite - blood side out (jay leno la ca 11-19-13)
Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite - You Found Another Lover (Queen Latifah Culver City Ca 10-23-13)
i had gone looking to see what other recent things ben and charlie had done or will be doing to promote their new cd and found that i had missed the queen latifah performance a month ago. at least i thought i had. so i checked and found it on youtube. they also did a radio performance but i didnt go looking for it.
these harper musselwhite performances if u get enough of them make a killer collection and could make a nice cd compilation since they dont tend to repeat the same songs constantly.

  12. Nash, are you still in Toronto? So am I. I’m Interested in any punk archives from your early days of the TO scene. Not to resell but to archive for historical purposes. Cheers.

  15. What a coincidence this posting is, BigO. I have been reading “Waging Heavy Peace” and added my download of this to my accompanying playlist. Then, I peruse my favorite blog and, boom, here it is. Keep up the good work, BigO!

  16. A very fine collection. Thank you Big O for posting. Amazing how many Neil Young shows you’ve shared over the years.

Audio is clear through all the tracks I’ve heard so far (12) with one or two exceptions.

Has anyone else noticed that the intro to “A Man Needs a Maid” is the melody to “Like a Hurricane,” a song he was playing on the same tour?

  17. “A Man Needs a Maid”

I have never understood this song.

  18. sluggo, ask Arnold S. He might explain.

  19. good one JH. i always thought “the actress” was carrie snodgress. aside from that it seems that neil wants a maid with “benefits”.

By barth on Nov 24, 2013

  20. Damn,I like Neil Young.

By Couz on Nov 25, 2013

  21. In “Waging Heavy Peace”, Neil says he often listens to something he calls “Dume” for Point Dume, CA where Zuma was recorded. He says it is the compilation of all the tracks recorded for Zuma, including those held back (the original studio versions of Powderfinger, Sedan Delivery, Ride My Llama and an incomplete Born To Run). Neil plans to release this as part of Archives Volume 2, but who knows how long that will take. Anyone ever seen a boot of this floating around? I found a Born To Run demo on Archives Be Damned and Powderfinger and Sedan Delivery rough mixes on Chrome Dreams [Rust Edition]. Still looking for that Llama.
