Minneapolis 1991 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis, MN; February 10, 1991. Excellent soundboard.

For those looking for something a bit more quiet, here’s a Michael Hedges show for you. (Michael Hedges died in a car accident on December 2, 1997. He was 43.)

Michael Hedges recorded for Windham Hill and made his name as a New Age musician. He was also a very accomplished musician (”who applied his classically-trained musical background in combination with various unusual techniques to the steel-string acoustic guitar… he wrote nearly exclusively in alternate tunings”). At the wikipedia, among those who paid tribute to Hedges were Pete Townshend, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt and Alvin Lee.

Thanks to dsgtrane (David) for sharing these tracks at Dime.

David noted: “Excellent SBD recording and, unlike some versions of this circulating, it includes the final track, You Can Have Anything You Want.”

Artwork posted at home.comcast.net - Thanks!

  2. Thanks! I met him in 1985, nice guy. Got to see him several times. A great loss.

  3. This guy got unfairly trashed for being part of the ‘New Age’ fad, but at the end of all the talk, he was one hell of a guitarist and song interpreter. We’re poorer for losing him.

  4. Much thanks for sharing this! I’m not big on them bootleg trading circles, this would be my 1st Michael Hedges bootleg - if there’s more out there, I’m surely interested. As for Michael, may he rest in peace. Cheers, BigO!

  6. He was a master I was lucky enough to see several times. “Aerial Boundaries” is my particular favorite of his compositions, excited to see it here. If you can find videos, watching him extract the sounds from his guitar is a treat to go with the audio. I know a performance we attended at Wolf Trap in Virginia was filmed and used for a PBS program.

  8. I had the privelege of seeing Michael Hedges at Club Bene in NJ in the mid 90’s. Unusual tunings, great interperations of All Along the Watchtower and Gimme shelter in an intimate setting.
