Vacaville, CA 1995 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Texas Jack’s, Cacaville, CA; February 22, 1995. Very good to excellent soundboard. A ‘teddy ballgame’ DAT soundboard master.

When Jerry Jeff Walker dives into Mr Bojangles, you know you’re on familiar ground, there’s just something very comforting in his slightly gravelly voice. And later, he throws out a curve ball, something like this (much to the delight of his audience): “I know that means so fucking much to you, that you can’t live without that song any minute. And then when I’m singing it, you shit the shit with the guy next to you… I know the drill, I’ve been here, I’ve done that, seen that…”

There’s a photo on the back of a long-out-of-print Jerry Jeff Walker album that kind of sums it all up. In the picture, Jerry Jeff is outside an old roadhouse on a lonesome highway. It’s night, and his collar is turned up against the chill breeze as he hunches over to light a cigarette. His guitar is slung around his back. It’s hard to tell if he’s entering or leaving the roadhouse, but either way you figure he’s got many miles to go before he sleeps…

Somehow, one gets the idea that that is how Jerry Jeff has always pictured himself. Even when he was playing screaming cowboy rock ‘n’ roll to thousands of people in the ’70s and ’80s, the solitary troubadour was always on the inside, looking out.

Jerry Jeff has lived - and is still living - the troubadour’s life. Lots of musicians talk about the road; Jerry Jeff really is the kid who rode his thumb out of his hometown in upstate New York to such exotic destinations as Key West (where he introduced another young musician named Jimmy Buffett to the pleasures of island life)… He really did sing for pennies on New Orleans streetcorners, alongside Mr Bojangles… He really did strap his guitar on the back of a motorcycle and go busking across Canada.. .And he really did sing in the smoky cafes and folk clubs of Greenwich Village, following in the footsteps of Bob Dylan and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.

And that all happened before he became a star. Most folks know that story - how Jerry Jeff moved to Austin, Texas in the early ’70s and reinvented himself as a Lone Star country-rocker. He became, along with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel, one of the arbiters of the internationally famous Austin musical community.

  6. Pretty sure this was recorded in Vacaville, CA not “Cacaville”, despite the artwork. There used to be a club called Texas Jack’s in Vacaville. It’s about an hour northeast of San Francisco. “Cacaville”, on the other hand, could describe a lot of places I have visited over the years!

  11. Thank you for this posting. Had a chance to see him in the mid-70s at the Calgary Stampede and he just blew everyone away. Backup band before Jerry Jeff was Goose Creek, so the entire evening of music was funking great! A Redneck’s wet dream.

  13. Hey dropkick sarge. That Duck dude seems awfully familiar with anal sex for a God-fearing backwoods inbred idiot. “Squeel Like A Pig, Boy” rang a bell after reading Esquire article. Still not gonna watch that idiot’s show though. Un-Reality in my opinion.
