When rock ‘n’ roll went to Cambodia…

Thanks to UncleBoko for sharing the tracks at Dime.

Lopa Kothari with the psychedelic sounds of the Cambodian Space Project in session. Based in Phnom Penh, The Cambodian Space Project are fronted by the charismatic Srey Thy and made up of Australian, French and Cambodian musicians who relive the glory days of 1960s Cambodian rock and roll, mixing psych with surf and Cambodian pop. Plus new world music releases.

From the band’s official biography:

The Cambodian Space Project formed back in 2009 when Julien Poulson, an Australian musician and film producer, was in Phnom Penh looking for Cambodian musicians to work with. He stumbled across lead vocalist Srey Thy singing in a karaoke bar and was instantly taken with her. A couple of months later she was part of a band and The Cambodian Space Project was born.

Up until that point life had been far from easy for Thy. Born into a poor family in the poverty stricken region of Prey Veng, she began singing in local restaurants at an early age. Thy left home at the age of 18, heading to Phnom Penh in search of a better life, but while there she was kidnapped and nearly forced into a sex trafficking ring. Left tied to a bed with electrical wires around her wrist for hours, an unknown woman freed her and gave her $2.50. Thy fled.

Following this defining moment in her life, Thy went on to work odd jobs when and where she could, sending money back to her parents and her young son as often as possible. She now uses her new-found fame in the region to raise awareness of human trafficking in Cambodia through workshops and public talks.

  2. how the hell did u find out about this? this is one of those bands i figured was one of my secrets. well i guess anyone into aural innovations type stuff would know these guys. if anyone isnt sure about whether they would like this stuff just check out the last track.
theres 12600 items if u do a search on their name on youtube but of course most arent of them. and 80 if u search for 20mins or longer items but i think only the first 3 matches are really of them. and only the first 2 are live items.
im crazy about anything psych. back in 04-08 i belonged to a yahoogroup that did vining and it was all psych music. i obtained 100s of obscure cds of a psychedelic nature. some were more known but some were as strange and different as this. many were official in fact most were. but lots were out of print and some were worth $1000s if u could find them. many werent on cd officially.

btw.. fans of space music might wanna check out the current issue of shindig magazine. theyre currently up to issue #36 but the issue that is out is a special space music issue. u should be able to find it for $10 to 15. shipping if u have to pay for that might be more depending on where u are getting it from but if u are able to get it at a store like barnes n nobles for example.. do that if u can to avoid shipping costs. i found it on ebay and all told with shipping costs it could run u $32. so u dont wanna do that. i got my copy for $10 and $5 shipping from a local shop since i am unable to get out easily. back issues are extremely worth it if u arent familiar with this magazine. they deal with 60s and 70s music and every issue is an excellent collectors item.
i dont know how many of u people read but its kinda like mojo but i could go on and on about the old magazines of yesterday. does anyone remember the one called strange things are happening? what a killer mag that was. sigh.

  9. From this angle it looks like Darth here is the one rooster in this cackling hen-house full of chickens who seem only to be here to hurl puerile insults at him.

Seriously, no bigger chicken in the whole world than the tough guy who hides behind his PC.
