Seattle 1980 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, WA; April 15, 1980. Very good audience recording.

On September 7, 1978, drummer Keith Moon died from a drug overdose. For the subsequent tour and album, Kenney Jones, formerly of the Small Faces and the Faces, took over the drums. On December 3, 1979, a crowd crush at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio killed 11 fans. For The Who, picking up the pieces seemed hard but it certainly didn’t show in their live gigs.

There are some who feel that the JEMS team’s version of the Seattle 1980 show was one of the better recordings of The Who’s 1980 tour.

Thanks to MS who recorded the show; the JEMS team for mastering it; and to Butterking for sharing the tracks at Dime.

Original notes (BK for JEMS):

JEMS is pleased to inaugurate a new series of master transfer releases from our longtime comrade, MS.

MS started his taping in the late ’70s, and while he was extremely active covering the Grateful Dead out west, he branched beyond as well, recording hundreds of shows over the last 35 years. His base rig was a pair of Nakamichi 700 microphones (often on a pole) and a Sony D5 recorder, and with his years of experience taping the Dead, he worked harder than many to find the sweet spot and get his mics up and away from the audience when possible. He doubled up several shows that JEMS also recorded, but often times MS had the superior location and the better gear.

EDIT: This was taped from Row 6 on the floor, 30 feet from the speakers.

The first tape in the series is a good example of where MS garnered the superior pull. This was the first of two nights for the new Who in Seattle as ‘80 Who shows go, I find this a pretty spirited performance.

For better or worse, there’s a lot of Kenney Jones in the mix - I’m not sure I’ve ever heard cymbals and hi-hat ring through which such clarity on a recording from the old Seattle Center Coliseum. This is a dense and rich recording, another one where computer speakers won’t do it justice. The buzz you hear on occasions is in the PA.

There are several highlights across the set, including the little-played “Dreaming From the Waist,” “I Can See For Miles” and the horn-led cover of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street.” But the song that has always struck me from this show is an inspired reading of the instrumental “Sparks” from Tommy, which is played with real pace and purpose. I haven’t heard many better 1980 Who recordings, but you can be the judge. Samples provided.

Thanks so very much to MS for opening up his archive to us. We look forward to presenting more of his fine work in the coming months.

  2. Fantastic! While the transition didn’t really work and they didn’t last, those initial couple of tours with Kenny had some really great aspects!

  3. for a really amazing quality early kenney jones who show theres a capital theater passaic nj 9-11-79 show available that is recorded off the sbd. it was recorded by the people who showed it on the screens and i heard there were people who went to some theaters and saw it in closed circuit. it eventually made it out on vhs around 88 or 89 and i saw it all over the place before that on cd and lp.
course the essen germany show they did with the dead in march 81 was brdcst on tv and also fm. and there were several shows in 82 that were recorded and brdcst including montreal. shea stadium was my fave show where the beatles lent them their stadium. i thought the clash were amazing that nite too. that is also available in sbd.
i got ahold of a who show on cd that was the first post entwistle performance. it was easily the worst recording i ever owned. i was ashamed to even use it as a coaster.
incidentally there is a nearly 200min show that i think is from royal albert hall on youtube. i know they released a 144min one from 2000 with guests like bryan adams etc. but im pretty sure there is another since i dl’d one that is much longer from youtube.
oh and i remember that they did a show at the universal amphitheater in la ca that was brdcst and one at radio city music hall in 89 that was brdcst also. there are a lot of who shows out there with kenney of fm / sbd quality.
a few yrs ago they did an entire tour where every show was recorded and offered to fans after the show and also via mail order like genesis pearl jam allmans hot tuna bad company and other bands who are doing this.
amazingly i havent seen even one single bad co show from this past tour anywhere. i did obtain a small shitload of that who tour where they did that tho. the only bad co show i found of this last tour was an audience recording of one of the first shows on the tour. it was nicely done but that was it. for my ‘money’ i still say bad co’s hollywood hard rock in fla i think on 8-8-08 that is often on my palladia channel and is officially released is one of their best shows ever. its also on youtube without commercials.
my fave era for the who is 68-82 but ill take anything i can get if its good quality.

  24. bakatcha andy whoever u are. i used to go out on fridays with a friend of mine named pete who shared most of my musical interests. wed start out running around taking pics if there was anyone to shoot in midtown. then wed shop for cds or other memorabilia. we’d work our way down to the village and look along the street sidewalks to see what ppl were selling that might be a bargain. i passed up that famous dylan $2 album that some ppl may have read about later selling for $1000s. i didnt recognise it. i did flip past it tho. guy 10-20 feet after me grabbed it up tho. i have found my share of rarities on the street tho for a buck or two. then we’d go into a bar or two unless there was a gig going on in a club worth seeing. we might eat at a local eatery. i did this with him from 83-93 every week or so. i stopped all that 20 years ago. but hanging out over a beer and talking stories about music and rock and photography and the 60s and 70s and my memories is what makes having lived thru it all worthwhile. thank u man. if u ever make it to mid ohio.. maybe we can do that very thing.

  32. Not a newbie, Sluggo … I’ve been here for years … just under the radar, downloading shows.

Which is why we’re all here, right?

By Andrew Wild on Feb 20, 2014

  33. andrew.. people like sluggo see what they wanna see. he doesnt realize that i dont attack anyone or harass anyone unless they start with me first. i have repeatedly told him and others of his ilk this. he/they refuse to listen. they feel that if i say something that they dont like (ie - my stance on war soldiers etc.) they have the right to target me and viciously harass me about it for years. it isnt enough to express themselves and say how they feel im wrong in this way or that.. but they feel that its acceptable to throw about personal threats attacks and harassing insults etc. can u imagine? these people arent 16 either. these are men in their 30s thru 60s in some cases. no no.. im serious. they think theyre better than i am.
i have repeatedly told them that i may not agree with what they have to say but i would defend to the death their right to say it.. as the soldiers theyre supposedly standing up for (at least in words on a chat screen) are fighting for this right.. but they dont think i should have this same right to voice my take on things. i only have this right when it agrees with them. doesnt that kill all?
a few have written to me privately and said i should ignore them because some of them are literally retarded.. albeit mildly in some cases and some more profoundly in others. and some are just out to yank my chain. others are here just to provoke me and get my goat. who knows. who cares.
i have made some amazing friends here. i have had a few i made here and lost. the way i figure it.. if they were that easily lost then they couldnt have been that worthwhile in the first place. i surely wouldnt abandon a friend over his difference of opinion on a subject that didnt affect us directly at hand. its not like we’re getting married and raising kids under a particular religion or something important like that.
i am in touch with a few here privately. some i have lost touch with sadly. but im figuring that they lost my email address. i sometimes link to clips on sites where there are comments below the articles. sometimes my comment appears in those comments sections. my email address is evident there. if someone was particularly interested in getting ahold of me.. they could put a tad bit of energy into it and email me privately. hint hint.

andrew - when u say u are a long way away from here.. im thinking u are in the uk. so 5500 miles from me. sigh. i havent been there since 1980 to see 3 wall shows. i saw 15 of the 31 performanes. i am the only human to have seen all of the usa ones who wasnt paid to do so. even roger himself shook my hand cuz he knew this to be true. rick wright also knew this and we talked outside a hotel on 57th street where claptons son died in fact. they stayed there back in 94 when they played nyc.
i dont recall if the pic i got of me with rick was then or if it was at the china club when he jammed with ron wood iggy pop bowie and winwood one nite. sigh. .killer jam. the next nite eddie murphy went to the china club and when he exited he threw 30 $100 bills out of the top of his limo into the air and i grabbed 2 of em. the rest were grabbed up faster than u could imagine. i got pics of him exiting the club but sadly associated press didnt want them unless i had a pic of his hand throwing the money. haha.
the china club was a small underground club up the block from the beacon theater on 76th st and bway in nyc. kinda exclusive but they did let ppl in.

Darth when you insulted my cousin you made it personal.I don`t care what you think you said or wrote about soldiers in general as being within your rights, you took it over the line when you made it personal about someone you don`t know and completely and utterly described him in a fashion which was not true.

  39. A little hostile banter in these forums is fine, but after nearly 40 posts, jeez . . .

Back to the show in question — Townshend has said that Kenny Jones never really fit in with The Who, and you hear some of that on this recording. But overall I think Jones acquits himself pretty well. The bigger problems are the setlist (pretty moldy by this point) and some of the vocals (Dreaming From The Waist is a near disaster). I don’t understand their arrangement of Dancing in the Street — makes you want to sit down.

By My Moose Is Dead on Feb 22, 2014

  40. as i said.. people (and i use the term loosely especially when sluggo is included) will see what they wanna see.
i dont know your cousin. i never insulted him since i couldnt. i dont know him. i didnt even insult soldiers. u wanted to see what i said as an insult to him or soldiers or both. i could have said something about rocks or rubberbands or paperclips and u would have found a way to take it personally. youre a fucking idiot. thats just how u are. theres no changing this about u. people like u will always find objection to things people say no matter what. mainly of course when they already dont like the person. the reasons that led up to them not liking the person arent important here. the fact that u already didnt like me at the point of the posting in question is what matters.
i didnt insult soldiers. i stated a fact about how things work and how they run. nothing i said was wrong.
i did wish that if he had died or something.. that u would have suffered the same fate because i had had it with u. u are a boil on my ass. what do u expect. u implied thru things u had said that he was gone. if hes not then what i believed didnt follow.
but lets assume here for a moment that he had died in combat. ok?
what i had wished was that u too could have died. i dont think theres anything wrong with me wishing u were dead. some people dont think its right for people to wish that others were dead. only u and i know what went on between us (thats u and me here im talking about). u and i had a slight friendship. i trusted u. i believed u were my friend. we started out here and had moved forward from here to private email and i believed that i could open up and let u into my world. u betrayed me. u ruined my trust. u took advantage of my good nature. i would never do that. now u didnt have to agree with things i said and this is way before the events that we are talking about on this site. the soldier thing came way later but thats not the important detail here. how u chose to deal with me from that point on had a lot to do with how u and i interacted on this site. u became a horrible bitter arrogant obnoxious piece of shit to me. and thats fine. my point is that in doing this.. u would find anything i said offensive. and it just so happened that u brought up a topic where a relative of yours had presumably died in combat during a war. well i wasnt too happy with u at this point. and i had a lot of anger towards u. i still hold a grudge against u for how u treated me and what u did to me. i know u are too stuck up and arrogant and full of hubris to realize it but this is how i feel and im pretty damned good at reading people and i always am extremely honest and direct and i normally wouldnt air out my laundry in public but u keep pushing and pushing as if u think im gonna just keep taking it without saying anything.. well fuck u!!!
ive had it with u. youre a stupid slime ball and u know it. u have had shit come your way and frankly u deserve it. karma baby. u earned all that shit that has hit u. and if it hits u again and hard.. its because of what u have done to others.
so when i told u that i wish u would die.. i meant it. looking back now.. its been a few years.. my anger has somewhat subsided but the more i see u still going at me full force.. the more i wonder if i should consider my stance here. u know what?? no i dont. i still wish u were dead. dead as much as your cousin is. u didnt fight in any way. thats fine. i dont care that he did. he didnt do me any favors. and u know what sluggish.. u didnt do me any either. drop dead!!

i often say.. if u were a worthwhile friend u wouldnt have been so easily lost. in the relationship we had.. u suffered the bigger loss man. trust me on this.

By darth on Feb 22, 2014

  41. honest to god…you can wish what you want about me but please quit disrespecting my cousin who died fighting for my country. Please stop being such an inconsiderate coward.
We have never had a friendship or relationship darth, Take your meds.
I think we traded cdrs at one time a very long time ago ,but that was before I found out what a complete and utter wack job you are that you could misconstrue that one simple transaction as a relationship and a freindship…???
shows how socially screwed you really are. Sorry Bigo and everyone that has to put up with this non stop lunacy ,BUT, I cannot and will not sit back and have this coward attack my family.

By sluggo on Feb 22, 2014

  42. darth since you claim not to have insulted my cousin what would you call this…quote from this post

” on a final note to u sluggo–
in all likelihood.. your cousin flunked out of high school and couldnt get a job. he had no skills of any marketable value and had no means of support. no one was interested in hiring the stupid fuck and he had no real worthwhile purpose or much of a realistic set of goals on the horizon. perhaps his parents suggested that the military would make a man out of him. maybe someone suggested theyd teach him a trade and said hed have some money when he got out. or he was threatened with no other options or choices if he didnt do it. maybe he was running away from something. who knows? certainly u arent going to tell us the entire truth. and frankly i dont care. most of us dont. the point is.. your cousins a loser like his cousin (u) is. normally i wouldnt say this to anyone. in fact u are the first one i have ever said this to. ever!! imagine how much of my respect u lost in order to get me to the point where i succumbed to the level where i can hate too. congratulations.

By sluggo on Feb 22, 2014

  43. i dont take any meds. and while u deny what u wish thats fine. i dont expect more from u. u tell it your way. u know the truth. how u twist it is your business. u know i didnt lie. i dont owe any relatives of yours any respect. u want to give it to him. .thats fine. u have earned none by me. any u might have had u lost long ago. youre a sniveling piece of shit and coward? hardly. id stand up to u and leave u begging for your life. u have no idea what a coward is.
no one here has to put up with anything. u cant keep me out of your fingertips. every chance u get u have something to say about me or to me. if u were able to control yourself i wouldnt have to respond to things u throw in my direction. dont put that shit on me u dirtbag.
im not the one socially screwed here. no one attacked your family. u are the pimple on the ass of any family that just happened to be related to u. all u have is people related to u that u can brag about. no one in your family brags about u.
what u need to do is make a name for yourself and stop living off the names older family members made for themselves u sniveling piece of worthless garbage.

and yes.. in all likelihood he did flunk out. as i said. and its true. he probably did. i wouldnt be surprised if my theory of what happened there is accurate. i didnt insult him. i just figure that if hes in any way like u are then he surely didnt have much going on. im shocked to hell that u graduated high school. so yes.. im shocked that he could have. and if he joined the military in all likelihood.. thats how it ran its course.
my imagery of a situation that may or may not have existed isnt an insult. its just a possible world. if it isnt true.. whats the problem? if it is true.. then i can see why youre so upset. i would be too. but if its not.. who the fuck gives a flying rats ass what someone who has no idea what the situation was or how it played out says?
maybe u are so angry cuz im right. hmmm

i even say in my paragraph above.. ‘who knows?’ its a series of possibilities. any of these possibilities could be true. theyre all possible truths. any of them could have been the reality of his world. in reality those were the situations for many a young man at the point he musta been at.. at that time in his life. u got angry cuz maybe i hit the nails on the head. theres nothing there to be so upset about.
had i lived in his time and family etc.. i may very well have been faced with the same choices. who knows? thats exactly my point. and u felt compelled for no reason cept your own pride and u didnt even know why.. to get all angry and u needed to lash out. who better to lash out than the one who threw the truth and the facts about life in your face. u may not have liked what i said but what i said was very likely true.
deal with it man. it doesnt even have to be true. the fact is.. your cousin was any man. any soldier. there were millions of cousins brothers fathers sons etc out there. i am not saying that it was a good thing that they died for no reason. i dont care that your cousin himself died. i do care that men died for no reason. for a war that we shouldnt have been at in the first place. thats not the topic here tho. the topic here was how much hatred i had for u. that u could claim that we didnt have a friendship.. says all that needs to be said. that says the kind of person u are. u are entitled to express that. i know i didnt read more into what was there than truly was. we talked thru email for months. no im not talking about a bromance here. and i am hoping that no one is going to jump on that opportunity to suggest something stupid. thats not what im saying here.
what im saying is that there was a friendship and that u deny is now is not a problem because im over it. i wasnt over it when i decided to tell u what i did. that i wished u were as dead as your cousin. u chose to view what i said as an attack on him. youre a fucking idiot. thats just like u. u look for offenses when there isnt one. u are the type that is like that. some people want to be offended.. u are one of those.

and i am glad u posted my comments toward u here. thank u. i want people to see how vicious my vitreole was towards u. how much ferocity was in my words. how furious i was with u. can u imagine what someone would have had to do to me to have gotten me to feel so strongly.. so powerfully to write those words???

i know one thing. i accomplished something. my words struck home. even if u dont really get what i am trying to say. even if u dont fully understand how angry i am at u for what u did to me.. u will never forget what i said.
“perhaps i no longer need to try. i have hurt u. and i wish to go on hurting u. i shall leave u as u left me. buried [but] alive.”
yeah so im quoting. deal with it.

i have no use for u. and this had nothing to do with cds. u arrogant ignorant insect. im done with u. deal with what i said and let it haunt u forever.

  44. on nov 17 2012 I posted this…

sincerest apology to all the regular readers and contributors to Big O that you have had to put up with this nonsense and bickering which by all means should have been offlist.
I will not continue the disagreement, again very sorry to Bigo and the readers.

I have fallen for the same trap once again and I am also once again apologizing to everyone here at bigo.

  45. I think we traded cdrs at one time a very long time ago ,but that was before I found out what a complete and utter wack job you are that you could misconstrue that one simple transaction as a relationship and a freindship…???

so you quit trading cdrs and the result is he publicly wishes you were dead ?
If That`s what darth calls friendship no wonder he hasn`t any.
    what a maroon.

  48. well we just got our asses handed to us by the fins in hockey so i have an idea for a new olympic sport for the summer games that we can win hands down. The new event will be “wishing people to death” and our entrant can be darth.

  51. he never sent me any cds. he made that up. but even if we had traded cds that would have nothing to do with me wishing him dead. only u would connect one with the other. im not shocked at the fact that u made that connection tho. thats par for the course. and while slug says he doesnt wish to continue this on here.. u dont get it and u wish to. thats pure genius on your part. ive said what i had to say about this.
slug didnt fall into any trap. he initiated it and i wouldnt have it. he lured me into his trap and i am the one who wont allow that. he likes to have his say and badmouth people then back off and say he wont do this on the list. well duh. u mean after youre done with what u have to do anyone who responds is wrong and they shouldnt get to say anything since theyre keeping it going?? how exactly does that work? isnt that ironic? u got to say what u wanted to but others dont have that right. interesting logic there.

im not interested in continuing this. he knows where i stand. anyone else who read what i said also knows where i stand. i dont lie. i didnt decide that he was a scumbag because of any trade we may have had. the 2 things are totally unrelated. the manner in which he handled himself on here and the shit he said and did to me on here and only on here is what i based everything i said on. nothing more nothing less.

and of all people to determine who should be on meds? omg. wow. u?? holy crap. aint that a kick in the head. the poster boy for birth control.

  54. its only 90seconds but some stones fans might appreciate or enjoy this rehearsal of them in paris for the mini tour theyre doing this year.

also not sure if yall know that charlie has announced his retirement at the end of this tour as well. even if mick doesnt wanna call it quits i cant see keith and ron wanting to continue on without charlie. not as the stones anyway. a nice longer recording of these rehearsals would be nice.

any rehearsals from the current clapton tour out there? any recent eric shows from his japan tour? hes doing nearly no shows this year. only 3 in the usa. is the jazz and heritage festival going to be streamed or brdcst? has anyone heard?
