PACO DE LUCIA R.I.P. 1947-2014

On February 25, 2014, Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia died of a heart attack while on holiday with his family in Mexico. He was 66. In 1979, de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell formed The Guitar Trio and toured Europe. In In 1981, Coryell was replaced with Di Meola, and The Guitar Trio released the successful Friday Night in San Francisco. He also formed the  Paco de Lucía Sextet in 1981 with his brothers, singer Pepe de Lucía and guitarist Ramón de Algeciras. In 1982, de Lucia played a series of concerts with Chick Corea.

Seville 1986 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the IV Bienal de Arte Flamenco, Patio de la Montería, Real Alcázar, Seville, Spain; September 30, 1986. Good to very good FM broadcast, slight hiss.

Thanks to original uploader hardboiled and to bluesy81 for keeping the show alive at Dime.

Original notes:

The tape was recently unearthed during a clearout. The torrent has been upped more to fill a gap in the historical record than as an audiophile experience, as the audio quality suffers in some parts from radio distortion - it is possible that someone with more experience than mine in using filters could upgrade it; please feel free. In the absence of a published setlist, my identification of the tracks/palos is non-authoritative.

FM radio broadcast, Radio Popular (Sevilla)

NAD 4220 tuner > Sony TC-W530 tapedeck > BASF CR-E II cassette(s) > Sony TC-K511S tapedeck > Audigy 2 > 16-bit 44100 Hz wav > Cool Edit for track splitting and minor editing (fading) > TLH > FLAC level 6

  3. Thanks, bigO. One of the best. Was lucky enough to see the “Friday Night in San Francisco” tour, with DeLucia, John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola.

There’s a (BBC?) video out there “Meeting of the Spirits”, with DeLucia, Mclaughlin and Larry Coryell. Amazing.

  6. Very sad. Caught the Boston Opera House show with Paco, McLaughlin & DiMeola. Couldn’t believe the guitar pyrotechnics from acoustic guitars. About hlf the show was improvised, too! RIP Paco
