Sound Of A Woman [no label, 1CD]

Unreleased album, recorded 1996-1997. Excellent soundboard.

Johnette Napolitano was the lead vocalist/songwriter and bassist of Concrete Blonde.

She recorded a solo album titled Sound Of A Woman around 1996-1997, and performed many of the songs on a solo tour opening for Paul Westerberg. The album was set to be released on IRS (a subdivision of Island Records), the label of her old band, Concrete Blonde. 1997-1998 was a bad time for Island, starting with the sudden departure of founder/CEO Chris Blackwell and ending with the total reorganization of the label. Sound Of A Woman was, effectively, lost in the shuffle and, at this point, is unlikely to ever be officially released. Bootleg copies of this album are rare and highly valued. - wikipedia

Thanks to govegan for sharing the tracks at Dime.

govegan noted:

As far as I can remember, the collapse of Island happened shortly before the album was due to be released. She toured to promote it and cassette promo copies were mailed to radio stations, which is where this copy came from.

I had one of the copies of this that had been floating around for years, but finally got my hands on one of the original promo cassettes, which appeared to have never been played. I managed to get a great rip of it and, after a little bit of cleanup, it sounds amazing. I’ve downloaded a few different versions of this over the years and this is by far the best that I’ve heard. Even if you’ve downloaded this album before, you should definitely give it another listen.

Original cassette promo > Nakamichi 481 Tape deck > Auzentech XPlosion sound card > Audacity (slight tape hiss removal and channel tweaking)

  5. beck is on ellen on tues. he will perform.

By darth on Mar 31, 2014

  6. ^i can cancel my subscription to TV guide now since we have daily listings from darth…

the only thing is missing is the crossword puzzle…are you going to start posting those as well…?

    would appreciate it mr ego…

    By Jerry's Finger on Mar 31, 2014

  7. really, who is this idiot anyhow that posts television listings?

By pismo t clam on Apr 1, 2014

  8. some people who like beck might have wanted to catch his appearance and may not have known about it. he performed. my announcement helped them know in advance about the live performance. u see these postings here are live and u can catch live on tv performances if u know about them. youre welcome. no need to thank me.

By darth on Apr 1, 2014

  9. ever occur to you that your television obsession appeals to no 0ne but your idiotic self and for that matter the listings only pertain to your area. this is the world wide web idiot, didn`t anyone tell you?
get your own blog and quit fucking this one up with your childish drivel.

By pismo t clam on Apr 1, 2014

  10. no. first of all im not obsessed. its a national tv program and brdcsts all over the country. not at the same time of course thats why i didnt give a time. the listings dont only pertain to my area. that this is the web has nothing to do with anything. i dont know why u mentioned that. as for drivel what u are doing is just that. harassing me is a waste of time. it isnt changing anything and im not going to stop what i do because u dont like it. the posting of a live performance appearance on a tv program that everyone in the usa at least gets is a fair comment. the usa is the 3rd most populated country and due to that fact i believe most of the people who access this site are from the usa.. i believe most of the people on here receive the ellen show. i cant say that they all care about beck per se but they might.
everyone in this country does receive the other programs i have mentioned. ie - sat nite live arsenio jimmy fallon and now the tonite show with him. letterman kimmel etc etc.
if u dont like my postings.. u dont need to read them. i will not stop them. u have the option to not comment on them tho. in fact the more u allow me to upset u.. the more i will keep doing it. haha.
this friday bruce springsteen hbo 930 documentary. its a major event.
nin on austin city limits pbs filmed back in nov.
tues the 8th dave clark 5 special 2 hours on pbs 8-10pm not to be missed. possible repeat on the 11th. another one not to be missed.
robert plant on palladia channel on the 9th on a show called live from the artists den at 9pm.
the hall of fame induction ceremony on 10th but i dont think it will be broadcast live. hbo did last years which will air this week in the days leading up to the 10th but so far i have no info on this years event. it will take place at barclays center in bklyn ny.
that robert plant thing on wed has the national doing the same thing on the 16th and the killers on the 23rd.

  13. Something I realized a couple of years ago was that Johnette “borrowed, lifted or copied” greatly on Firefly.

Listen to Rhinestone Cowboy and then listen to Firefly. Johnette used the same progressions used ON THE VERSES AS on the Glen Campbell song, Rhinestone Cowboy. Check it out.

  14. “its a national tv program and brdcsts all over the country”

Have to say I agree with pismo!
This is the WWW and parochial TV listings about who’s on Kimmel is merely irritating to any of us from elsewhere on the planet!Quite what Beck being on the tele in a posting on Johnette Napolitano is anyone’s guess!?!? At least try to stay on thread!

Doesn’t bother me that Darth’s muttering is on here quite so much as others but sheesh, Darth get a blog!

  18. ok youre not getting this. this has nothing to do with being in ohio. the ellen show and all the other shows that brdcst on abc nbc and cbs dont only show in ohio. this is a massive country and all these programs show all over the entire country in 300million peoples homes. i dont understand what it is that u dont understand here. theres only 7billion on the planet and the usa has the 3rd most people of any country. in just over 30 yrs india will overtake china as the most populated but usa will still be in 3rd place.
in any event the programming we have here still has live performances on it. when i announce something it should and often does appeal to people who listen to live music. sometimes its not necessarily about a live performance but about something that a music fan would want to know about. such as the bruce thing on hbo i mentioned and the dave clark 5 thing which will have loads of rare live performances. i strongly recommend not missing that.

just as u arent going to be interested in every item that bigo posts here for u to download u probably also dont read every comment under every item that u probably dont look at since u didnt bother to dl that item. it stands to reason. right?
if u dont read every comment.. then why cant u skip over mine.
this is for those who have a problem with my comments and postings. rather than wasting space and bandwidth complaining repeatedly forever non stop about things u dont like knowing that it wont do any good.. why not just ignore what u dont want to read and comment about things u either like or make a comment that has more importance? offer up links to things that u know about that others could use. tell us about stuff u know that we might not. try to spend less time flaming me and harassing me and use this space better. what youre doing is boring and a waste of time. it isnt accomplishing anything and no one is getting anything out of it.

as for the kent state thing… i dont know why u are still on that. as i told u… feel free to do the research. there are ppl who were there. u werent. there are books u can read. there are news reports. there is a lot of documentation about this. i personally know people who i have met and talked to and went to see in person and at various benefits over the years in the 70s and since and i learned a lot of information about kent state. i am not going to change anything i said here. i dont know why u would expect me to. u may not like what i said but that doesnt mean i will change it to suit u. get over it. deal with things u dont know that other people do. i am sorry to have given u something that bothers u so much. i dont know why it does however. but i am absolutely 100% positive of the information i provided. now move on. there is no reason to keep bringing it up any further.

  19. hi im Darth im an idiot jackass…mr clown mr ego…

i take it you were there since you know so much about it…? how do you know i wasnt there you fucking goniiff…? how & why do you assume this you asshole…?

  23. I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this album about 20 years ago. It was a Cd made from one of the promo cassettes, and i tweaked it in ProTools using the Waves Z-Noise bundle, L2, etc. very cool that J changed her mind and allows you to share these songs. I always thought it was a shame that the label held this album hostage and never allowed her to release it on her own. I think it was a great work of art, and the only criticism I have of it is that the first half of the album would have benefited greatly from having live drums or at least live drum loops, like the second half of the album does. The quality of mine is far superior, but I did promise her that I would never share it online
