PROCOL HARUM
San Francisco 1977 [no label, 3CD]

Live at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco, CA; April 8, 1977 (early and late shows). Very good audience recordings.

Thanks to kneesfudd for sharing these tracks at Dime.

kneesfudd added: “It really doesn’t speak well of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that these guys haven’t been inducted yet. They’ve been in mine for 44 years and it’d be longer but they didn’t hit my radar until about 1970 other than the big hit. Pretty damn impressive repertoire of material.”

Early Show notes (by kneesfudd):
- Very fine audience in small club (with some overload in this show only).
- Warts: Some distortion in loud passages where taper must have had levels too hot (this show only). #8 cuts and #9 starts late at tapeflip. Could use a bit of treble push in my opinion. Surely missed some dropouts but tapes were in good shape.

Late Show notes:
Could use a bit of treble push in my opinion. Surely missed some dropouts but tapes were in good shape. Tapeflip between 7 and 8 (no music missing).

Recording:
unknown stereo cassette recorder & microphone(s) > master narrow stereo audience cassette > 1st generation Maxell XLII-S 90 cassette, Dolby B on.

  2. And thanks much for this one, too, Big O friends! I do love classic PH. This triple disk set will be good for my weekend yard work. Hot sun, but hot tunes makes for an easy job out of doors.

    Best regards!

  3. One of my favorite bands……still going strong,Thanks, saw some great shows at the Old Waldorf but sure missed this one.

  4. Thanks again Big O. Very interesting music here! The band had just released an underwhelming album and would disband for several years following this tour. Dee Murray filled in on bass for this tour only. Brooker, Grabham, Solley & Wilson, so much talent.

  5. Two “Whaling Stories” and a “Wish Ne Well” — not too shabby!

  6. What? no Homburg? darn, it’s one of the only five or six Procul songs that I know.

thanks for the post, BigO, a great post, as always. :)

  7. Thanks, Big-O, great!

One small correction: Track 109 is not “As Strong As Sampson”, but “Simple Sister”.

  8. … and 114 is not This old Dog but A Whiter Shade of Pale.

  9. Thanks Jonas.

  10. Thank you very much! :)

Great show and great sound, nice to have something more or less well recorded from this lineup!

Another correction: track 108 is indeed Homburg, not Whaling Stories (but that is done -and greatly- on the latest show).
